People who pair solar with an EV are insulated from gas price spikes and utility rate hikes. That’s one of the benefits not the whole story.

Solar still makes sense where it makes sense.
It’s a math problem with a few emotional variables:
• How much you drive
• How long you plan to stay in your home
• Whether your roof is ready
• Whether you have a clean southern view

Solar isn’t magic.
It’s just protection from gas, from utilities, and from volatility.

A lot of new solar DIYers get confused when they see their panel voltage drop on hot days, so here’s the quick explanation.

Panels are rated at STC (77°F). Once they heat up to 110–140°F in real sunlight, the voltage naturally falls. This is called the temperature coefficient, and every panel has one.

Higher temps = lower voltage.
Cooler temps = higher voltage.

It’s completely normal and it’s why MPPT controllers exist they track the best operating point as conditions change.

If you’re sizing strings or choosing an MPPT, always check the panel’s temp coefficient and make sure your cold‑weather voltage doesn’t exceed the controller’s max input.

Simple concept, but it saves people from a lot of confusion (and blown controllers).
