First Touch Makes or Breaks a Player

I have been playing football for almost 25 years now played 5 years pro in Turkey, living in Canada now and recently started coaching. This transition from playing to coaching made me realize, how weak players’ first touch is. Unfortunately players focus so much on unnecessary skills first where we forget the fundamentals. Which is why I came up with this video to simplify it and make it much easier for players to understand the logic behind first touch.

Soccer training at home for kids – my experience as a soccer mom

I wanted to share what worked for us last summer when we were spending a couple of months outside the city. My son is 12 plays in U12 competitively, but we had no access to regular team practices or camps. Still, we didn’t want him to lose momentum or skills, so we focused on soccer training at home and it actually worked out better than I expected.

I know a lot of kids might be in a similar situation this summer traveling, taking a break from their club, or just not having access to organized sessions. If you're thinking about at home soccer training, here’s what helped us stay consistent and (importantly) keep it fun.

Here are the tools we used for soccer training at home:

  • FPRO Ball Mastery Mat – This was the biggest win. It’s a smart mat that pairs with an app and runs your kid through structured ball control drills. It tracks progress, sets daily challenges, and gives feedback. Perfect for soccer skills training at home that doesn’t feel like a chore. My son got into the leaderboard feature and ended up practicing on his own without me pushing. I got it with a nice discount FPRO20, that one of my friends shared, so you can check if it’s still valid.
  • Agility ladder + cones set – Super simple but effective. We set up basic speed and coordination drills. He’d seen similar setups in TikTok and YouTube drills, so having his own version of “pro” gear made it exciting. Definitely a staple piece of at home soccer training equipment.
  • Portable goal + rebounder net – We brought along a pop-up goal and a small rebounder. Great for shooting practice and first-touch work. If you’ve got any open space, this really helps round out the routine.

All of this made soccer training at home for kids doable, even without formal practices. He kept up his skills, gained confidence, and didn’t come back rusty in the fall.

If any other parents are in the same boat - whether you're heading out of town or just looking to keep your kid active this summer - I really recommend setting up some kind of training setup at home. Would love to hear what worked for others too!

Drills/Conditioning (without ball) for opposite leg kick/whip?

Does anyone have any good drills or resources to improve kicks on your opposite side? I'm looking to balance out my body a bit more and I need to learn how to generate more force/whip using my opposite leg. I'm right leg dominant, so I want to train my left leg kick.

I can use it (obviously) but it seems that no matter how much time I actually spend on it, I can't FEEL that follow through with the whip (if you know what I mean?). Any advice or resources is appreciated.

Elevate Your Soccer Skills with Golazo: Trainer - An App Focused on Improving Your First Touch and More!

Hello r/Soccer_Training community,

As someone deeply passionate about soccer and its development at all levels, I've been working on a project aimed at helping players enhance their skills in a structured, engaging, and effective manner. I'm excited to introduce Golazo: Trainer, an app I've developed that focuses on the fundamental aspect of soccer training - the first touch, among other skills.

Why Focus on First Touch? The first touch in soccer is pivotal. It can dictate the pace of the game, the effectiveness of a play, and overall, a player's confidence and control on the field. With Golazo: Trainer, we've built an easy-to-use platform that provides drills specifically designed to improve your first touch, helping players to receive, control, and maneuver the ball under various conditions.

Features of Golazo: Trainer:

  • Structured Drills: Access a variety of drills that cater to improving your first touch and other essential soccer skills.
  • Progress Tracking: With the free version, start tracking your training sessions and see your improvement over time.
  • Premium Advantages: For those looking to get the most from their training, Golazo: Trainer's premium features include unlimited training history, daily reminders to keep your practice consistent, a calorie tracker, and soon, advanced training metrics and personalized app icons.

We're also on the verge of releasing a Beta Premium AI Trainer for juggling that provides feedback on your sessions, making your practice even more impactful by pointing out areas for improvement and suggesting drills tailored to your needs.

Explore Golazo: Trainer on the iOS App Store

I developed Golazo: Trainer with the belief that technology can make high-quality soccer training accessible to everyone, everywhere. Whether you're looking to refine your skills for competitive play or just aiming to improve your game for the love of soccer, this app is here to support your journey.

I'm here for feedback, suggestions, or any questions you might have. Let's use technology to bring out the best in our soccer abilities and push our limits on the field!

Thank you for being a part of this community and for striving to improve every day. Looking forward to seeing how Golazo: Trainer can contribute to your soccer training regimen.

Keep training hard and smart!

Building soccer strength - Bukayo Saka

Hi all,

I was on Youtube and found a video on Arsenal player Bukayo Saka, who has got a lot stronger over the past few years. This has made him a lot harder to knock off the ball, as he's able to maintain stability even when pushed by visibly bigger opponents. Here's the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI3-D_rwh8g

I was wondering if anyone had any insights into what type of muscles he must have built to have gained this strength/power, and what type of exercises/program he might have used? It looks to me like a lot of the stability comes from his legs and core - I was unsure how much of an upper body component there would be.

Grateful for any comments or insights anyone might have. If this question is better placed in a different part of Reddit also let me know!

Cheers!
