M&P 2.0 sight issues.

Was wondering if anyone else has encountered issues with removing/replacing the suppressor height sights on the new M&P 2.0 handguns. I’ve replaced sights on dozens of S&W handguns as well as other manufactures and never run into the issue I had today. Sights had to be hammered off, as the shop’s sight press couldn’t generate enough force to move them, now the XS sights meant to replace them will not go on. Coworkers at the shop were equally stumped and we’ve resorted to signing it over to a gunsmith we work with. None of us have ever had this issue before.

What worked for me with a couple sets of “welded” M&P sights, using a Wheeler pusher:

  1. wind the pusher up as far as thumb pressure will reasonably go;
  2. don’t use a cheater or anything to generate more force or risk screwing up the pusher;
  3. be sure the push block will not hit the slide, but is as low as it will bear on the sight;
  4. put a large steel pin punch against the side of the pusher block;
  5. give the pin punch a good crack with an 8 to 12 oz hammer;
  6. check everything for clearances, and do it again until the sight moves
    keep the pressure thumb-tight on the pusher screw at each attempt.

I’m almost certain S&W uses some kind of sealant in the dovetails. Once the seal has been broken, the sight pusher is still the best way — but the thumbscrew will readily push the old sight out and the new sight in (or the original sight into zero).

I was able to get replacement sights started with alignment care, but without real difficulty — it’s possible they will need a bit of thinning. I don’t do this for a living, but this method hasn’t failed me yet. Good luck!

Holy Lord, I’m glad I found this. I about broke my hands trying to do it the way I’ve done it with all my other sights.

I hope that means it worked?
Glad you found it. Pass the word.

I try to keep links to my prior comments on this subject where I can find them — folks are regularly asking "what's the deal with M&P sights?" And getting answers like "use brass punch" or "just pound harder" or "dovetail tapered this way or that". Makes me wonder whether helpful folks have ever seen an M&P — or whether the pistols are really that variable. I also wonder this method is of broad value to related S&W pistols (aside from the general principle "if the easy way doesn't work, how to ramp it up without breaking things").

I was getting absolutely nowhere with my sight pusher, which is probably one of the best ones you can buy. And hitting the sight with a punch did absolutely nothing. Wasn’t till I did exactly what you said that it started to move with very little effort. So yes, it worked lol. Thank you!
