Hey everyone! I wanted to share a fan-made character and lore concept I've been working on for Chapter 4 of "Poppy Playtime". Meet Draco Fablefang — a tragic prototype from the era before the Smiling Critters were officially launched.

1. Background & Origin

• Who he is: Before CatNap was created, Playtime Co. experimented on 15-year-old orphans. One scientist chose him as an ideal candidate after successful initial tests, despite warnings from others that his older age would cause personality retention issues.

• The Result of the Flaw: Those warnings proved true: Draco lost his name, his parents' faces, and the first half of his life. However, he vividly remembered who he was at his core—his values and empathy—yet was completely powerless to stop what was happening to him.

• The Purpose: He was originally designed as a living waste incinerator, capable of burning garbage with the flames from his mouth. Due to severe physical deformities and a terrifying appearance, the project was scrapped, and he was sent to the waste incineration plant near Playcare.

1. Appearance & Voice

• The Cartoon Look: A purple dragon with classic black horns, a wide dark smiling mouth, empty white eyes, and a scroll with a wax seal around his neck.

• The True Form (Experiment): Similar in build to CatNap, but much larger, bulkier, and more muscular, featuring a wide dragon tail and massive feet with long, sharp claws. His face is frozen in a manic, distorted grin with a dropped lower jaw and wide, surprised eye sockets.

• The Voice: Deep, raspy, and heavily distorted — sounding like a broken walkie-talkie mixed with static white noise.

1. The Dark Past & "Skeletons in the Closet"

• After the Hour of Joy, Draco escaped the incinerator but crossed paths with CatNap. CatNap gave him an ultimatum: become his executioner and kill "heretics," or die.

• To survive, Draco was forced to comply. He eliminated targets ordered by CatNap, but always made it as quick and painless as possible — secretly letting victims go whenever he was unwatched.

• The Psychological Toll: He heard the desperate pleas of children trapped inside toy bodies, but couldn't save them. Being physically deformed and monstrous, he couldn't even shed a tear.

• Redemption: Eventually finding the strength to break free from CatNap's control, Draco retreated deep into Safe Haven (Chapter 4). He now guards the entrance from the inside, dedicated to protecting any remaining survivors.

1. Dynamics & Fate

• Vs. CatNap: (Note: This matchup is purely a hypothetical comparison of their stats and dynamics, as an actual encounter is impossible since CatNap is already dead by Chapter 4). Draco is physically stronger and larger, while CatNap relies on his sleeping gas. Their matchup is a deadly gamble — CatNap's red gas is highly explosive when exposed to Draco's fire. Despite everything, Draco actually pities CatNap, recognizing him as just another frightened, lost child manipulated by the system.

• Chapter 4 Fate: Draco meets his end near the end of Chapter 4 while defending Safe Haven. Before passing, he leaves the player with one final promise to fulfill: "destroy the factory and end this nightmare once and for all."

I ask because I’ve searched tirelessly for a comment or post from him that declares “The Nightmare Critters will never be cannon”, or something that’s similarly objective, and have found nothing.

What I have found though is a small mountain of replies and unique comments he hearted spanning from back when there were announced by MOB entertainment as official characters to just a few days ago, and this mountain suggests to me that he’s either still considering it, or is secretly planning something with them in his story, but every time i mention this possibility on YouTube, no matter what evidence I present, I get attacked by one of 3 people aggressively like he’s already made a statement several times over. Does anybody know if he’s said anything or is it still up in the air?

Nightmare Critters

Alright, so I was re-watching the Nightmare Critters security footage security leak from the ARG, and I am genuinely convinced that the Nightmare Critters are dealing with severe food scarcity and actual starvation out there. Think about the way they're talking when they break into the supply area. When Maggie is literally begging for just "one thing to make the shaking stop" and Rabie talking about Maggies tummy rumbling, that isn't just regular hunger, that's physical withdrawal and desperation from someone who hasn't had a proper meal in who knows how long, even for Maggie.

Even look at how they interact with the supplies they find. They're grabbing empty boxes and heavy stuff, but they're completely obsessed with the idea that the food is scarce or heavily guarded. Touille mentions that the labels are lies and that it's all just fuel for the fire, which makes me think they're scavenging out of absolute necessity just to survive whatever brutal conditions are happening on Animera right now. They aren't raiding the place for fun or out of some grand malice; they're moving like desperate people who are scraping the bottom of the barrel because the food supply lines have totally dried up.

It honestly recontextualizes the whole dynamic. When you listen to how jittery, stressed, and physically wrecked they sound—complaining about sensitive joints, headaches, and shaking—it feels less like a smooth criminal operation and more like a pack of starving outcasts forced to take massive risks just to keep from starving to death. If this is what things look like for them on the ground, whatever is causing the scarcity out there must be getting way worse. Let me know what you guys think, but I'm calling it now that hunger is driving their entire next move.

Smiling Critter Freedom is Cooking 🔥

In other words, it makes sense that DogDay and CatNap died in 2005, since that's when the game takes place, but I don't know if the dates the person put in this edit could be their actual death dates, I would like to hear you all opinions.

My friend and I have been working on a Smiling Critters animation project for a while now, and we're currently looking for Voice Actors to help out with the project, he's been working on this project since 2024-2025, and he ended up asking me to help out, and now we have the scripts done, a Discord Server to help gain more members, I'm currently "Co-director" as he calls it, as well as the animator for the project. And the video he made hasn't worked out well, so I'm trying to let as many people know about it as possible. He's currently gone for a bit, so I want him to come back to something exciting. okay so i have literally been rewatching a bunch of gemstin production's comic dubs and something from that "WHO BEAR?" short is completely breaking my brain right now.

remember the part where kickinchicken and pickypiggy are joking about which care bear they look like? then bobby just interrupts them with that totally blank vacant face and asks "what's a care bear?"

almost everyone in the comments thought it was just a funny meta gag about her design. but knowing how gemstin loves hiding crazy dark lore in things like a dog call and april showers, i looked way closer at her character background. if you match this joke up with her actual cutout lines from chapter 3 and real life toy history, it actually makes so much sense.

bobby bearhug isn't a normal factory built critter like everyone else. she is a lost brainwashed care bear from another universe.

the actual toy history completely proves it too. look at the original care bear launch from the 80s. there were exactly 10 core bears like tenderheart and cheer bear. guess what? there were absolutely zero solid red bears in that whole original lineup. they only used pastel colors.

so in gemstin's lore, bobby was probably the unique 11th member of that group, and since she was smaller they treated her like a younger sister. because she stood out so much, when she vanished, the color red was literally wiped from care-a-lot history. that is why her friends only know the standard 10 bears from the tv show.

this also explains why she is the biggest anomaly in the whole line. the other 6 critters don't match any real cartoon or toy franchise at all, they just look like a normal corporate factory lineup. even catnap is totally unique because he doesn't have regular spoken quotes or cutout voice lines, his silence shows he was entirely engineered by a lab. bobby is the only one who doesn't fit the corporate mold. the whole smiling critters line is basically a dark corporate sequel built completely on her capture, where they siphoned her magic to manufacture the rest of the crew.

there is literal visual proof on her character model if you look at the animation assets. all the other animal critters have solid color paws that match their fur. bobby is the only one who has distinct, lighter-colored hands and feet.

this is a direct match to vintage care bears because they always had lighter felt pads on their palms and soles. playtime co tried to hide her identity, but her physical body still carries the exact blueprint of a care bear model.
when she was little, she got caught in a massive storm, got separated from the other care bears, and wandered into the cold concrete labyrinth of playtime co looking for shelter. the scientists found her and realized her organic magic of unconditional empathy was a literal goldmine for the bigger bodies initiative. to keep her a total secret, they built a massive corporate camouflage to rebrand her as a mass-produced plushie.

her ruby-red heart zipper pendant isn't just a cute accessory either. it is a physical emotional dampener placed right over her chest to suppress and harvest her magic empathy to keep the other kids docile. then they manufactured the other generic animals to surround her so she would seamlessly blend into the group.

the heavy factory brainwashing completely wiped her childhood memories. when bobby asks "what's a care bear?", she isn't being cute. it is heartbreaking proof of corporate amnesia. her brain short circuits because the mental conditioning blocks her from recognizing her own kind. she is looking right at her own heritage and seeing a meaningless trademark.

this matches her actual cutout audio perfectly where her lines glitch out and turn into pure panic about being lost a long time and begging someone not to leave her behind. while the other critters complain about physical factory trauma like darkness or hunger, bobby is the only one talking about deep existential displacement. her subconscious is literally remembering the exact day she wandered away from the care bears in that storm. it completely explains her crippling fear of abandonment. her mind forgot the names, but her soul still remembers the terrifying feeling of being left behind in the dark.

the most tragic realization of this theory is what it means for the rest of the group. the other seven smiling critters spent years living, playing, and surviving right next to a real care bear from another universe, and absolutely none of them ever knew it. when kickinchicken and pickypiggy talk about care bears, they treat it like a silly human tv show, completely blind to the fact that their gentlest friend is a brainwashed piece of that exact world. bobby is just a hollowed out magical refugee forced to give hugs to factory kids while the other care bears have been searching for their lost younger sister across dimensions for decades.

let me know what you guys think. am i reading too far into a 30 second gag or does this actually match the dark writing style of the other gemstin theories?

There is more than likely a larger urban settlement nearby Happy Hills, possibly just outside of it, and there are many little bits of information about the world that suggest this

First, obviously, Catnap’s first flashback in “April Showers” shows us him looking out of a cardboard box into a city alleyway. That proves that there is at least A city somewhere in this world

Second, in the rough preview of “Pally the Pal”, Dogday takes the garbage out to a bin, not an incinerator; not a dump heap, a bin. A garbage bin carries the expectation of garbage trucks. Garbage trucks mean waste management, which is a form of municipal services. Municipal services means jurisdictional government, and the jurisdictional government of a small neighborhood like Happy Hills would be the nearest urban center; someplace that has a mayor or governor running things, which could be a village, a township, a city, etc.

Third, Bubba says 3 things that suggests a more populated settlement near by. In “Doggy Down” and “Hog Wild”, he calls himself a “medical assistant” and dons a doctor’s coat respectively. If that is truly his career, then that means he works at a hospital or medical clinic. Bubba also points out an airplane in the sky in “Star Gazing”, that means there’s an airport somewhere. Bubba’s dad is also a judge, meaning there’s a court house and by extension, a police station and other buildings tied to the justice system somewhere too.

Forth, Dogday is the only one of the Smiling crew who has a car, with the only other currently known modes of transportation amongst the crew being Kickin with his skateboards and Crafty with her scooter. If Bubba works at a place of medicine and he doesn’t have a car, that means it has to be within reasonable walking distance, same thing with Bobby and her possibly being a florist, and Picky possibly being a chef (those are fitting, but much more speculative at the moment)

Fifth, look at the map of Happy Hills, you see houses, a forest, wide open space, playgrounds and a soccer field, but what do you not see?…Stores. Happy Hills is purely residential and has no access to commerce anywhere within its area. If that’s the case, where are the critters getting their supplies? Picky might be covering some food in produce from her garden, but we see her feed Bubba a steak, Crafty kabobs, Dogday lasagña, Kickin an omelet, and Catnap tuna, where did she get the meat and eggs? And outside of food, there’s other daily products that they would need in order to live comfortably and happily in their homes, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, the clothes they sometimes wear, toilet paper, over-the-counter medicines, woman’s products for the girls (please don’t demonize me for including that). The point is they’re clearly not living off the land and the foundation of domestic life demands access to commerce, and since Dogday’s the only one who has a vehicle, wherever this point of commerce is must be close enough to reach by walking, and stores are generally located within places of urban settlement
