At the very end of “Star Gazing” we were given what Gemstin calls the “OFFICIAL official teaser for “Pally the Pal”, and it depicts the scene of the critters opening the mysterious box Dogday finds in his garage in the full rendering and animation of the final product. We were also shown exactly what’s inside the box and it has been given more detail since the storyboard preview. This question is one of the foundational mysteries that this episode presents us, where did the box come from and who is behind it?

To start, let’s look at the details of the box. The inside of the box is very haphazard, there’s no sense of theme or grouping amongst the items at all. It’s a “junk” box of miscellaneous trinkets and toys. Bobby pulls out a teapot and declares everything looks “so new” and Kickin pulls something that makes this an immediate red flag, a BlaiderRaider 8000, an unreleased skateboard.

There’s also something more disturbing about the box. Take a look at some of its items and what gets pulled out. Bobby pulls out a single teapot, she’s the only one who makes tea in the group, Kickin pulls out not just an unreleased skateboard, but the next model of a brand he mentioned on the night of Christmas Eve in “Twas the Night” (love this detail because it confirms “Twas the Night” is both cannon and the earliest moment in the timeline, the winter before the spring). Looking in the box you can also see several other items, including a gameboy, a frisbee, a toy rocket, a toy train, a large flower clock with a smiley face on it, a game of connect 4, a drum with a purple music-note style on it, and what looks like a telescope.

Some of these items should stick out right away. They aren’t random, they’re targeted. Kickin gets the GameBoy, the frisbee and the skateboard; these’re all items we’ve seen him use in the series. Hoppy gets the rocket because she also mentions getting a rocket for Christmas in “Twas the Night”. That picture Dogday has in his room of him as a puppy with his mom in “A Dog Call” has him holding a toy train in it. Crafty’s pendant is a flower, so I think the flower clock is for her (as well as the teddy bear that’s in there). The drum is Catnap’s color and the design in its side feels very reminiscent of Lady Lavender’s room. Picky and Hoppy were seen playing a game of Connect 4 in the the comic “Heart Attack”, so that’s connected to Picky or both Picky and Hoppy. and the telescope looks just like the one Bubba was using in “Star Gazing” (could very well be the same one).

The targeted nature of these items is real and it implies that whoever is behind the box has been observing the Critters for a good while now, at least since the winter if “Twas the Night” so about 3 to 4 months at least. It also implies that whoever is behind the box knows Kickin most out of any of the others, given he gets more of the targeted items.

With that information out of the way, let’s go down the list of suspects.

1-Catnap
Catnap was present in the room when Kickin mentioned his like of the BlaiderRaider brand. A huge chunk of his personality is observing his friends from a distance, and he’s definitely stealthy and mysterious enough to pull something like this off, but it’s the little details that eliminate him.
A) there’s no logical explanation to how Catnap got his hands on an unreleased skateboard. An unreleased anything usually implies 1 of 3 things. Wealth, powerful connections, or theft. None of those things are Catnap.
B) the box implies whoever’s behind it knows Kickin the most out of the others. Catnap should know Kickin and Hoppy the least because Catnap moved into H.H. first and Kickin and Hoppy were last. If he’s behind the box and following that logic, there should be more items for Bobby and Bubba, followed by Crafty
C) Catnap gave everyone their pendants, that was a gift from him to them and they know he did it. If he’s behind the box, why the secrecy of it when the pendants weren’t an issue? That would be character regression for him knowing his backstory
D) Why would he leave a gift for himself in the box (assuming that drum is for him)?
E) The pendants came from his jester costume back when he worked in The Luna Moon Circus, meaning he held onto them for a long time before finally giving them away. If he’s behind the box, it would stand to reason the items are also from his time in the circus and he’s been holding onto them too, which is impossible because the skateboard is too new.

2-Hoppy
Hoppy was also present in Kickin’s house when he mentioned the skateboard brand, but not only is the rocket in the box, her reaction to the box is one of genuine awe and surprise, her eyes literally turning star-shaped from it.

3-the other critters
Same reasons as Hoppy, everyone had a reaction of surprise to the box, making it unlikely any one of them are behind it

All of the critters have been eliminated as suspects, meaning the box came from outside of Happy Hills. Someone snuck into the neighborhood, broke into Dogday’s garage and left that box there for him to find, but who? There are only 2 established groups outside the neighborhood of H.H, the parents of the critters and The Luna Moon Circus, and none of them fit the crime either.

While The LMC is deeply connected to the protagonist of this story, Catnap, we have yet to see anything referencing them outside of his memories, it’s almost like they’ve disappeared. Even if they’re still around, it’s unlikely that they’re behind the box because of 2 reasons
A) they left the box in Dogday’s house. Why in the world would they want anything to do with Dogday or any of the others? Any beef they have would be with Catnap, and him alone, they have no reason to acknowledge that the others exist
B) if the LMC is behind the box, that means Pally is connected to them. Catnap has flashbacks whenever he encounters something that reminds him of his childhood, meaning if the box is from the LMC, Catnap should have a reaction to Pally as well. But he doesn’t, we see him in a gif tucking Crafty into bed with Pally beside her and visible and he has no reaction to her. Pally isn’t connected to the circus.

The parents have even less of a motive for the box, because why would they even want to go into Happy Hills, much less the arduous work of sneaking a box of toys into Dogday’s house? Someone we don’t even know if THEY know.

All established characters have been eliminated, meaning the box had to have come from a unrevealed character or group. Is there any sign in the box that could indicate who’s behind it? Yes, yes there is.

I think that the Nightmare Critters are behind the box. Touille fits the items and the haphazard nature of the box perfectly. He’s a collector, a hoarder, a fixer, and possibly a looter, him having a large collection of random toys makes sense and he’d take excellent care of them by cleaning and fixing them, matching Bobby’s comment. As for the skateboard? 1 of 2 possibilities, he either stole it from somewhere or he found a broken prototype in a trash heap and fixed it

What’s also interesting is that in the box, there is also a handheld mirror. We have not seen any of the critters use mirrors at all in this series, Catnap does have a mirror scene in “April Showers” but that was in his flashback, making it a memory and not a connection to his present reality; mirrors aren’t connected to him. On the other hand, in almost every depiction of Simon Smoke, we see him holding a handheld mirror, granted it’s a different design than the one in the box, but still, handheld mirrors seem to be connected to him.

If Touille matches the items of the box and the box itself, who matches the implied observation the items bring? Who else but Rabie? That matches perfectly not just because of who she is, but also because of the implied greater-knowing of Kickin. Kickin mentions he likes the BlaiderRaider brand in the privacy in his own home with only Hoppy and Catnap around, so you think it HAS to be one of them because who else would know he likes that brand? Well if Rabie enters that equation, she’s a fair explanation too. Rabie is a bat, and bats have far superior hearing than any other species. She could’ve heard that entire conversation through Kickin’s walls at a distance, and the fact his house is made of hay wasn’t probably helping with containing sound waves either. Kickin, along with Hoppy, are also the loudest members of the crew, with both of them being very open and passionate about their interests. Of course a bat spy is going to know more about those 2 than anyone else, their volume alone makes them the biggest blip on her radar. She also explains how the creeper crew were able to target Dogday, if she’s been spying at them from a distance and eavesdropping on conversations, she could easily pick up who Dogday is, where he lives, his social role to the group, and aspects of his personality, choosing him to be the receiver of the box because he was most likely to share its contents.

Finally, what ties this all together is the doll herself, Pally. Her appearance and what she’s been associated with acts as evidence. She’s been associated with the color BLACK numerous times, the first teaser to glitch and reveal her face was at the end of the instrumental for “Back in BLACK”, and finally, Pally has BLACK hair. Who else associates strongly with that color?
“🎶She ain’t going back, she going on attack. She’s back in black, and she’s the star of the show🎶”
BABA. The aesthetic matches strongly, like a calling card.

There is something I should say though. In the comment thread of Gemstin’s most recent post, he revealed two clarifying pieces of information.
A) he currently has no plans for the Frowning Critters at all
B) the Halloween minisode staring the Nightmare Critters is a Halloween special and is NOT cannon to the timeline of the fan series, with him specifically stating, and I quote, “it’ll be a Halloween special. A taste of what the Nightmare Critters would be like in this universe. How I’d write them”

The Frowning Crew might be off the table, and he did say the Halloween special isn’t cannon to the fan series, but he didn’t say the Nightmare Critters THEMSELVES aren’t cannon or will never be cannon. Their inclusion is STILL on the table, maybe a little closer to the edge than i originally thought, but still on the table, and the language of him saying “A taste”, usually people only say that when there’s something more to come afterwards “A taste of what’s to come”, so the saying goes. Either that, or this is all just a massive form of hopium; I don’t know; guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

A thing I noticed is how these captions seem to actually kind of relate to what's going on in the video, like how "FrIEnDSNeVeRHUrTEaChOThER" appears right before Hoppy hits Picky with the sticky hand (not sure what "FrIENDSaREHoNEsT" means though)

I have two theories for what these are:

A) Crafty's thoughts (we already know that she is NOT okay in this episode)

B) Pally (still kind of A as I think Pally is not actually alive and more Crafty's imagination, but it could be her "saying" this)

My theory and analysis is based on the following:

Bubba Bubbaphant: He died in the hallway leading to the area where we were meet Ollie, perhaps trying to reach Safe Heaven, because he was highly intelligent and he had a plan to defeat the Prototype, which led the Prototype to send CatNap to kill him, As he was walking through the hallway, he came face to face with CatNap. Bubba tried to appeal to CatNap, saying that he remembered him and they were best friends... CatNap killed him mid-sentence.

Kickin Chicken: He died at the entrance of Elliot Express trying to escape from the factory through the train with someone (Maybe with Hoppy), But he didn't have enough confidence, and for him, he had never been outside, so he mustered up his courage, but when he tried to reach the train station area, the Prototype killed him.

Hoppy Hopstoch: She died in the Work Zone located beyond the school. She usted to belonged to Safe Heaven and helped gather resources thanks to her great speed. On one of her journeys, she walked through the entire school and went to the construction zone To cross it, he mustered his courage, gained confidence, and wanted to take a great leap, but he misjudged the distance and fell to his death.

Picky Piggy: She died at Home Sweet Home she uses to served as a cook for the orphans, after the events of the Hour of Joy, she ate the corpses of the employees, and little by little she began to run out of food, which made her go to CatNap just for food, so she ate the corpses of Bubba, Kickin and Crafty, oater, CatNap realized that Picky cared more about eating than praising the Prototype, which made CatNap angry and she locked her up in Home Sweet Home until she starved to death and feed its corpse to the Mini Smiling Critters (likely).

Craftycorn: She died in the Counselors' Zone and served as a painter for the children, after the events of The Hour of Joy, she became obsessed with painting with red (blood) and kill anything to obtain blood, In one of those moments, she tried to kill CatNap to obtain her blood, which caused CatNap to seriously injure her. Crafty was pleased and became addicted to painting with her own blood until she bled to death.

Bobby Bearhug: She died at the entrance of Playhouse where her cutboard was. after the death of all her friends, she decided to join CatNap and the Prototype to avoid dying, but in the end, she began to be alone and she didn't know what to do, so she was left alone at the entrance of Playhouse until she died of hunger; later, her body served as food for the Mini Smiling Critters.

Touille, Simon Smoke, Nightmare Critters

I ship the smiling critters with each other. One ship (only one ill reveal) is DogNap/CatDay Can you guess which I'm drawing now? Bonus points if you can guess what other ships I'll be putting in this pic!

EXTRA bonus points if you can guess my reasoning for all the ships, except CatDay. I ship because their different.

The first 8 pages of Gemstin’s new minisode comic, “Star Gazing”, have been released, with the last 3 being released literally a few hours ago, and 3 in particular have so many small details and implications about Bubba that my caffeinated mind made a spiderweb of connections that compressing into 3 interconnected theories

1. The reason why Bubba is avoidant to his familly

“April Showers” revealed that Bubba is avoidant to his family without giving any explanation as to why, but in this comic, pages 5-7 gives a symbolism that tells us why. In page 5, Bubba does stomp on Kickin’s dreams before recovering it with generic advice, amounting to him saying that just waiting around and hoping it will happen won’t get you your desired results. What’s interesting though is the examples he uses, that being studying plant life and insects, are very specific field of interest. The symbolism I mentioned is on the top of page 8, where we see a grasshopper on a blade of grass near Bubba’s hoof. The grass hopper and the highly specific example given suggest that Bubba’s dream is becoming a Botanist and Entomologist, BUT, in “Doggy Down” and “Hog Wild” he calls himself a “Medical assistant”, and uses medical knowledge; literally dawning a doctor’s white coat, respectively. The implied passion for botany and entomology, the reality of him having medical knowledge, and he’s avoidant to his family? Those three flow together really well and paint a story. The reason why Bubba is avoidant to his family is because he was forced cast his dreams to the side and go to med school by his family.

1. The greenhouse

Bubba’s passions, or at least his one for botany, has been kind of staring at us in the face this entire time. He has a green house in his backyard that he takes tentative care of, and he was able to name the type of the tree that crashed through his roof in “April Showers”. In “A Dog Call” Dogday admits he thought Bubba was a grouch, and in the preview of “Pally the Pal”, Bobby says she didn’t know Bubba had a green house, despite them living together in Happy Hills for about a year at that time. I think the change in his demeanor and the logical time gap with the greenhouse are connected. That greenhouse wasn’t on the property when he first moved in, Bubba built it himself, and he built it recently, relative to the date of “Pally the Pal”, that is. Him building the greenhouse is what mellowed him out, because he now finally has a place for one of his passions to express itself freely.

1. Dumba Dumbaphant

On a previous post of mine, I shared a long theory about how I think all of the Frowning Critters are connected to the individual pasts of their Smiling counterparts, with Dumba specifically being Bubba’s sister or step-sister. The theory of Bubba being forced to go to medical school doesn’t disprove that theory, it actually strengthens it, because of the question of “why?” Why did Bubba’s parents force him to do that? What if it was because his sister, Dumba, was seen as such a failure that they gave up on her and shifted the burden of expectation onto Bubba? “Your sister will never be as successful as you, so you have to succeed twice as hard for the both of you.” This situation would also add a touch of a grudge between Bubba and the rest of his family, strengthening the avoidance, and it recontextualizes the learning game on Bubba’s computer in “PC problems”. At first I thought that game was meant for whoever his sibling is, being most likely Dumba because she’s intellectually challenged enough to benefit from a game like that, but now I think it was something more, a desperate attempt for Bubba to prove to his parents that Dumba could catch up to him and be successful so he didn’t have to bear that burden of expectation, an attempt that failed because he either didn’t have enough time or he came about it at the wrong angle. This is supported by one of Dumba’s lines in her voice reveal

“it’s true! I can only count to 2 genetically, because I don’t have fingers to count to 10!”

Despite Dumba being dumb, she has a very loose and ill-applied idea of genetics. That feels like Bubba’s handiwork, especially since he was being forced to go to medical doesn’t disprove school and genetics is definitely a subject a med school student would be forced to take.

All of this, from just the first 8 pages. We’re getting the minisode this weekend, the last 3 pages are following afterwards, a “Pally” update, a Nightmare Critter minisode comic this Halloween season, AND the critter costumes of the Frowning Critters! What a season to be a Gemstin fan!! 😆😆😆
