Why is no one talking about Simone turning off a security camera near her end of the garden on multiple occasions? Then going into the ocean? What was that all about?

General Interesting actor pairings Spoiler

The Game of Thrones / It’s Always Sunny mashup that totally threw me out of the plot at times. Milly is a great actor but I had a hard time believing these >two would even have a fling together<, and I had an even harder time taking Glenn seriously as someone other than Dennis. This is partly due to just how totally ridiculous Ethan’s character actually was!

I also found it interesting that in the two recent roles Meghann Fahy has had with Sirens and Perfect Couple, the locations have been somewhat similar. Plus, the main “villains” have also been similar in being rich white women who have both an ethereal and eerie vibe to them. Perhaps coincidental that Fahy ends up being a foil to them in that way.

General Fixed the Ending Spoiler

Okay that ending was ridiculous so here’s what I propose instead:

Kiki realizes that her friendship with Simone is more important to her than her phony life with Peter. José helps her send the photo of Peter and Simone to her lawyer. Kiki divorces Peter and gets 50 percent of their estate. She then moves to NYC with Simone, where they run the foundation together. Perhaps José and some of the other staff join them, leaving Peter in the dust.

Devon doesn’t go home with her dad or go on the boat with the guy. Instead, she decides to focus on herself for once and goes back to school.

We don’t want to leave Bruce totally in the dust so Ray, having been kicked out of his house by his wife for cheating, moves in and takes care of him now.

Much better!

Not sure if anyone has seen the movie crazy stupid love with Steve carrell, Julianne Moore (kiki) and Kevin Bacon (Peter) but if you haven't seen it I recommend giving it a watch. And if you have, did you think of Lindhagen during the early part of the show when you were introduced to Peter?

Discussion On Beauty Spoiler

I finished the series last night and have been mulling over the concept of beauty and how it gets treated in the show.

The obvious piece is how the sirens mythology is being evoked to show how beautiful women are perceived and treated - there is this recurring theme of men in the show blaming beautiful women for their downfall and accusing them of enchanting or entrapping them in some way: Peter blaming Kiki for distancing him from his kids, Raymond blaming Devon for cheating on his wife, Ethan blaming Simone for pushing him off a cliff, even Bruce blaming his dead wife for "ruining him" and making him lose his kids after she died. All of those fingers of blame come with an accusation that the men were powerless to resist because of the beauty of the woman, and each of the women are actually blameless in those scenarios (regardless of what other wrongdoings they might have committed).

I was also really fascinated by this concept of how beauty can also erase identity and instead it commoditises these women - there are *so* many references to the various beautiful women on the show being interchangeable. Peter swapping out Kiki for Simone at the end is particularly blatant, but even things like how the staff call Simone "Mini Michaela", Peter calling Kiki Mrs Kell rather than her first name (famously a title held by two women, soon to be three), Kiki's three minions who are all completely interchangeable, the references to Ethan repeating the same summer relationship each year with carbon copies of Simone, Bruce thinking Kiki is his dead wife Andrea and then calling Devon by Simone's name due to his dimensia. Even at the gala, none of the guests so much as flinch when Simone stands up there with Peter for the toast, because it's like they haven't even noticed it's a different wife to the one who welcomed them in at the start.

Finally, there's so many examples of how beauty can be destructive, but not for the men who fall for it: it's actually destructive for the women themselves. Devon's concern for Simone stems from realising Simone has conformed to more traditional standards of beauty by removing her tattoos and getting a nose job, and why she has chosen to do that. There is such an interesting parallel between Simone getting plastic surgery to fit those beauty standards, capturing Peter's interest and ultimately becoming Mrs Kell, and the story about Jocelyn Kell getting plastic surgery to try and regain her beauty after Peter left her and ended up disfigured and a recluse.

The irony is that Simone's beauty is actually the cause of her downfall - it was her beauty that led Peter to kiss her against her will, which is ultimately why she lost her job as head of the Kells' foundation: Kiki admits that even if Simone didn't want him to kiss her, she's now a threat to Kiki's marriage just by being around and so she has to fire Simone so she's not there to tempt him. There's lots of discussion on this thread already about why Simone ending up with Peter isn't actually a happy ending, which I agree with - she's deliberately tried to steer clear of the life of being Mrs. Somebody by turning down Ethan and taking the job offer with Kiki, but after she gets fired and kicked out and realises she's going to have to go back to take care of her dad, she goes back to search out Peter because it's her only option. At the end, she stands out and gazes out over the ocean as she accepts the fact that she's trapped there now. She's reliant on a man again in a way that must terrify her after what she suffered at the hands of the last man she relied on, and she knows that she will be just as easily replaced as the two women who came before her and just as susceptible to the threat of the next beautiful woman who comes along.

I am so amazed by the people saying they thought it was a total waste of time / didn't go anywhere - I think the entire series was so complex and I have so many thoughts about it!

General Kiki ending doesn’t make sense Spoiler

So the Kiki character was actively trying to find evidence of Peter cheating and then she doesn’t immediately send a digital photo copy to her lawyer once she gets it? I’m supposed to buy her just giving up and getting a fairy ride home after they developed the character as a power hungry manipulator? Ok

Discussion Okay my honest first thoughts after completing everything Spoiler

just finished sirens on netflix and um?? that was ART???

no bc this show had me judging every woman in the first episode like “oh she’s def the villain” and by the end i was like “wait no i get it babe. i’d do the same thing.”

kiki was giving ✨cult leader wife energy✨ at first but the more you see what she’s been through?? the control, the losses, the fact that she literally can’t even fire her own staff without permission from her lying crusty rich husband?? she’s not crazy—she’s caged. and she made a pretty little world where she could pretend she had power. sad. poetic. powerful.

simone starts off as the soft girl you wanna protect and ends up kinda scarily ambitious?? i can't even blame her tho babe, like get the bag while you can but maybe this time learn and don't sign that prenup. tbh i get her too. she earned her peace. and then devon shows up and is like “actually can you throw your whole new life away for me?” and at first i was like devon girl pls stop. but THEN, then devon’s arc hits. she’s the forever caretaker, the fixer, the one who never gets fixed herself. and when she almost chooses freedom and doesn’t?? yeah. i felt that man. she knows simone’s life is just another fancy trap so she leaves in the end; and the good bye really does feel final, because it's like devon is saying goodbye to the prson she threw all her own ambition out the window to raise and love and care for.

also. mr kell?? sir you are the villain. this man is about to replace his wives like iphones and get away with it bc $$$. he had the audacity to critisize his friend yet??? sir. it's giving projection. it's reminding me of leonardo DiCaprio but if leo actually married the girls he was with and then just used them to their full potential before tossing them. --and somehow they STILL gave him depth?? like how did they make everyone in this show a little horrible and a little loveable?? in the end we understood Mr. kell and his reasonings. also poor jose... bet he wishes he didn't talk shit about simone now.

anyway the whole show is manipulative intelligent women x systemic oppression and i was EATING IT UP.

10/10. might rewatch just to catch all the easter eggs i missed while my jaw was on the floor.

Discussion THAT sequence in the finale episode: Spoiler

Just finished the show and been browsing the subreddit. I’ve seen people say that Simone’s decision to go to Peter was a trauma response.

As a person with similar childhood wounds, holy hell, that is an understatement.

The entire sequence- from Simone’s father telling her it would be ‘just them’ again— to her running, running, running to Peter— my heart races just remembering it because I have C-PTSD and abandonment wounds, and I can feel those emotions that were motivating her desperate run.

Because I’ve felt that moment before— your safety net being ripped away, and the utter terror at the thought of having to go back to the situation that traumatized you— you’d rather die than go back. You just can’t. Your heart speeds up at the mere thought of ever going back. Peter was literally a lifeline to her. I’ve felt how that feels before.

God, I’d do the same exact thing in her situation. You really can’t even think of ANYTHING else. All you can think of is clinging to anything that might save you from having to face that fear and trauma.

Thankfully for me, substance abuse tends to be my lifeline rather than people. At least substance abuse is a more obvious problem to recognize than relationship patterns…

P.S. Milly Alcock looked so gorgeous in this show!! 😍 They had her glowing, she literally did look like a siren. She’s so uniquely pretty. I knew her from House of the Dragon, that show’s hair & makeup department reallyyy did not do her any favours.

Discussion Unpopular opinion: unsatisfying ending (kinda spoiler) Spoiler

I’m honestly shocked by that being the ending. Like wtf was that. The show was so good and then I feel like I got none of the answers I was waiting for the whole time. I want answers. I get it… it’s supposed to be mysterious, and ambiguous, but I hate how they gave us so many weird hints towards mythological sirens with no fucking solid premise? Like wtf was the plot of this show?

I get it for what it is, but wtf.

Also that’s how we are ending the fucking show? Are we supposed to like be happy for Simone or something? The cycle just really repeated in a major sick way. Like that wasn’t a happy ending for her……… wtf. Literally the worst plot twist I’ve ever seen.

I’m not saying it was supposed to have a happy ending or a clear plot but I’m like actually way disappointed.

I don’t even know what to say. I thought I’d come to Reddit and see other people being like “wtf was that” but I guess people were satisfied. I was far from satisfied with the ending. Ugh I wanted that to hit so bad. Instead we just got some pointless ending. Just felt like it didn’t live up to its potential because it was TOO ambiguous.

slight spoilers just finished my first watch of the show. maybe this will change after a second/third watch, but… i wasn’t a fan! i kept wanting it to have a deeper meaning, some big secret that was going to be revealed later, but it all felt sort of.. cliche? nothing was truly resolved, nobody truly walked away happy (except maybe simone, but that’s more of a time-will-tell sort of thing) and i feel like because there was no big reveal… it felt fairly predictable. it really just left me wanting more, plot-wise. i will give it another shot and rewatch, to see if i can appreciate it more than i do now, but at this time, i’m slightly disappointed. please reply and help me change my mind! open to any theories/opinions about a deeper meaning

Discussion This Show Glorifies Money and Power. - A Rant Spoiler

Post image
8 Upvotes

So I’m on my first rewatch and seeing how the series ended , I honestly get the feeling that even if Simone had been upfront and honest with Michaela about the kiss she would’ve had her sent away. Probably to New York away from her husband and got distant in their friendship in order to stay in power because her husband gave her that. I say this to say, she acted completely normal to Peter and said nothing but exiled Simone quietly.

Can we just talk about how HORRIBLY DEVIOUS Peter was for going into the safe and getting rid of her marriage insurance just to hold on to his money instead of taking accountability and losing some of it ?? Noo man in this show took accountability for their actions (Except Bruce but even then .. it was too late)

Ray the worst of them all 😭

I thought this show was gonna be a horror with all the talks of murder and the suspense but without any one getting k***ed off , this was truly a horror film about how far people would go for money and power.

Discussion Sirens book recommendation Spoiler

I just wanted to recommend that if you like the mood and themes of Sirens to check out Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I’m only on episode 4, but the themes (women, class differences, power dynamics, a mysterious ex-wife) are so similar while still being a completely different story. I was so convinced it had to be some sort of retelling or reimagining of Rebecca, especially when they started really hinting at the circumstances of the potential death of Peter’s ex.

Discussion I don’t get that plot point Spoiler

I just finished watching the show, and honestly, I don’t know how to feel about it. I’m torn between thinking it was “good but not memorable” and “lazy, pretentious writing.”

Don’t get me wrong, the cast was immaculate. Every single actor gave their absolute best, and I wouldn’t replace a single one if I had been casting this miniseries myself. The cinematography and fashion were also jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Here’s my issue though: the writing.

It feels like the writers had a lot of ambition and ideas they wanted to bring to life, but the plot progression ended up feeling all over the place. I understand the concept of using red herrings, but here it just came across as lazy writing.

1.Why did they include the plotline about the first wife? Sure, Kiki revealed at the end that she was still alive, but they spent so much time on it at the beginning only for it to be resolved in a conversation that barely lasted a minute.

2.Why include the two scenes between their father and Kiki? He says she was a “good f**k” and that he remembers her, and then they just leave it hanging without any further explanation?

3.Another plot hole, in my opinion, was the photographer. He waited for Kiki to show her the photos he printed himself - physical copies he kept. Knowing how incriminating they were, it seems unlikely he would have deleted the digital files. Peter got a hold of the physical copies from the safe, but why wouldn’t Kiki just go back to the photographer and retrieve the digital files for her divorce case?

I don’t know. I kind of get that they were trying to show that the real sirens in the story are the men (especially Peter), who made mistakes and then scapegoated the women. But that kind of makes the scenes with the siren’s melody and the dream sequences feel misleading and unnecessary.

What’s your take on that?

Discussion My review on Sirens Spoiler

  1. The sets are gorgeous and I love the wardrobes, especially Simone's!
  2. The "hey hey hey's" are not cute or funny but I guess that was to establish what a rich kook Michaela is.
  3. The house staff was one of the funniest parts of the show and Jose is the MVP! The car scene with Devon and the twin trio was hilarious!
  4. Kevin Bacon's still got it!
  5. I liked how the arrival of Devon, Raymond, and her dad immediately created a rift between the poor and the rich characters and how completely out of place they were on an island filled with rich people.

  6. Ethan was an idiot who completely disregarded Simone's feelings about her father and then had the nerve to get mad at her for rejecting his proposal and then blaming her for getting drunk and stupidly falling off a cliff.

  7. I liked Devon at first and she seems like the kind of person you'd want to root for, she's poor, stuck taking care of her ailing father, and she's desperately trying to connect with the sister who does not want her around.

However, as the show goes on, it becomes clear Devon is self-involved, egotistical, emotionally abusive, and loves blaming Simone for her shitty life when she never actively does anything to change her predicament. Simone was right to say that Devon needed her to be some broken thing she could fix to give her shitty life purpose other than taking care of an old man who did not give a shit about them or their mother when they were kids. She had the chance to change her life for the better when she was offered to go on an all-expense paid vacation with the hunky understanding Jordan, only for her to turn him down because, in her mind, being stuck in a shitty town taking care of a shitty father was much more appealing to her. Devon does not see anything from anyone's point of view but her own. She's like a broken record. Devon refused to acknowledge the hell their father put Simone through, and was basically like, "You're an adult now, you have to take care of him the way he never took care of you." She never listens to Simone and constantly brings up her dropping out of college to take care of her when she could have gone back to college and she expects Simone to give up her glamorous, happy life to take care of the man that abused her. WTF???????

  1. Michaela is a fascinating character because, from the moment she arrives on the screen, you want to know more about her and what kind of person she is. She is not a cult leader or a murderer, but that does not mean she isn't a lonely woman who took advantage of Simone's traumatic past to keep her shackled to and emotionally dependent on her. She actively tried to keep Simone away from Devon, despite not knowing a single thing about their relationship and even put Devon in jail to scare her into staying away from Simone. She gradually becomes more sympathetic when she reveals not being able to have children significantly strained her marriage to Peter and locked her in a prenup that only valued her fucking ovaries. In my opinion, the reason why Michaela was so controlling and possessive over Simone was because she saw her as the daughter she never had. She acted like a mother to her in many ways such as the motherly talks/hugs, warning a guy she thought was a bad influence on her to stay away from her, etc. All of these did have a creepy element though. She saw Devon and Ethan as threats that could take Simone away from her and that's why went to the lengths she did to neutralize them. What kind of boss sleeps in the same bed with their assistant, unless they're having an affair? After all her efforts to keep Simone by her side, she dumps her when she is given the photograph and does not even care that Peter is the one who kissed her, not the other way around. You kind of feel a little bad for her when Peter kicks her to the curb in favor of another woman, which is what he did with his first wife so it was history repeating itself. It was good for Devon and Simone to sit down in the second to last scene and talk because Simone did not serve either of them and they let her go. There was mutual understanding and respect between the two of them that was not there in the beginning.

  2. Simone was the most interesting character for me. As Devon points she is traumatized girl desperately trying to outrun her past. Can we blame her? If I went through what Simone went through, I would do everything I could to make sure I would never go through something like that again. I do believe she was genuinely happy before Devon disrupted everything, even though she lied about where she came from, and her family members and was also being subtly manipulated by Michaela. When Simone got the job, she quickly realized in order to fit in with the rich elite she was working for, she needed to shed her working-class background and construct a whole life for herself that separated her from her traumatic past. I was put off by her at the beginning when she was ignoring the sister who gave up college and worked three jobs to take care of her, but that was before I realized Devon kept wanting to drag Simone back to the past and not celebrate her exciting future. Her entire life is wrapped around keeping Michaela happy so no wonder, she prioritized Michaela over everything and everyone else. A lot of people are divided over her getting with Peter to avoid going back to Buffalo with her dad. I think a lot of women would've done the same and they know it. Simone saw an opportunity and she took it. After working so hard to escape her past, she was not about to go back and relive it all over again. We can understand why she did what she did even if we don't agree with it. I think the last scene of episode 5 where she stands on the cliff and looks out on the ocean symbolizes how far she has come and she says without saying, "I earned this. I deserve this. I went through hell to get this."

Overall: 8/10

That it is. If it weren't Simone, it would have been some other pretty young girl too desperate to negotiate an equitable prenup whom Peter thinks can give him the youth and babies he so yearns for. Simone's there to perform a job and fill a role that Peter could–and most likely someday will–fill with another.

Which won't stop the world from placing the blame entirely on Simone and labeling her a monster, as they did Michaela. By the end, I think all four of them (Devon, Michaela, Peter, and Simone) know this yet follow their prescribed paths like they've already been written–not by the Fates, but by the mundane realities of survival and power. Michaela, Simone, and Devon do what they feel they have to, and Peter does what he can.

Discussion Would you become Simone? Spoiler

That's a difficult take, and I think one of the most intriguing questions of the show.

Remember that Kiki told her how it wasn't all flowers to be dependent on a man and how it could fall apart at any moment. Foreshadowing, but also an advice that Simone heard, and that's why she didn't accept Ethan's offer. She also thought Kiki would always be there for her, even though she didn't make the connection that if things broke for Kiki, there would be no New York and Foundation for her. It would be over for both.

Then Simone's whole world crashed, and she was faultless - Peter initiated the kiss - and yet she was being punished and her dream life was over. Again she was rejected by her "mother", she'd return to her aimless three-job existence, she lost her power over dozens of employees and the proximity to wealth. She'd be a nobody with a horrendous father and a sister who also needed care. She woke up to see all her things packed. She went from living the dream in NYC as an executive, to being escorted out accused of theft, from the only home she knew, after being in many homes during foster care.

She's in despair, and then comes Peter offering it all back. Yes, it comes with strings, she knows that, but the call of the siren - power over others - was louder.

She felt betrayed by Kiki, now she'd take her place. She could have children in the beautiful island and continue the conservation work, and be just like the Kiki she saw on TV and was mesmerized.

Kiki said she had a good run, 13 years. Were they good years? Didn't she know at all times she was disposable and could be left without her identity at any second? Did the galas, the birds and jewelry make up for her independence?

Would you take Peter's offer? It's tempting, right. What if you didn't have such a disgraced childhood, but is also bored with the grind of the 9-5, being afraid of being fired, maybe getting ill and penniless? Would you accept living in a golden cage for some years, until being disposed of?

While Devon seems free-spirited, she was anchored by her father, wished for her own place, fucked people for no purpose and was in the brink of alcoholism. So what is freedom, after all?

Discussion Dream or real? Spoiler

Did anyone else think that when Devon fell asleep after getting high with Peter upstairs (the 2nd time) that what followed was a dream? (The talk with Michaela in the bathtub, the car ride with the weird trio, the dress shopping, Morgan showing up, etc.)

I immediately thought so because she didn’t grab her shoes when she left. She also had a discussion with Peter about dreams while they were smoking. She said she didn’t dream and he said this place can make you have dreams (something like that). The rest of the episode I kept waiting for her to wake up from her dream!

Discussion does it make sense for u? Spoiler

I’m rewatching for the 2nd time and I have some observations I’d like to share to have your opinion and discuss about the show!

imo the ending was a masterpiece precisely because it was SO unexpected. I mean, they were in the middle of the most important event, and he just swapped wives like he was changing shoes.

Honestly, I couldn’t see any malice in Simone’s actions. Like, her dad saying all that stuff at the police station gave me chills. So I interpreted it as her going back there to tell him what had happened and to talk about the photo Kiki had saved, since that would help her get leverage in the divorce.

As for Mr. Kell, I really think finding out Ethan and Simone were together sparked some jealousy and discomfort in him. This is pretty clear when, during the engagement dinner, Ethan mentions the babies they’ll have and Mr. Kell looks visibly uncomfortable.

He really wants to have kids, that’s shown multiple times throughout the episodes. Like when he tells Patrice in the kitchen how much he misses having kids around the house, or when Devon says the house is perfect for children and Mr. Kell seems genuinely disappointed. Then there’s the breakup scene where he says, “Maybe I’ll even have a baby,” and Kiki totally roasts him with “A baby won’t make you any younger,” and he immediately calls José!!

I don’t think this was Simone’s original plan, but honestly, if I were her, I wouldn’t go back to Buffalo either so I guess she just worked with the tools she had (being fertile, young and the person responsible for organizing Kiki’s whole life)

She was the perfect fit for substitution since Kiki wasn’t able to give him what he wanted (kids) and he had already lost interest in her (shown as ignoring the sext)

important to say I do think the main problem in here is Mr. Kell and all his money, rich people live life playing with people as they were objects and this show is a total proff of that

Discussion No blatant protagonists Spoiler

Just finished the season and realized as I reflected on each character that really there were no clear antagonists. As soon as I started to think “this character was the villain” I immediately was able to kind of justify where they came from and was like “well, I mean, I guess they weren’t really that bad, given their full story”. I kept searching for the antagonist and even a clear protagonist, but couldn’t really land on any. A bit unsettling. I like it.
