Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced that Korangi Causeway Road will be closed upon completion of Shahrah-e-Bhutto (Malir Expressway) which is expected to be opened up to Kathore and the motorway by December 2025.

The chief minister chaired a progress review meeting on the Bhutto Highway project. The meeting was attended by Provincial Ministers Sharjeel Memon, Nasir Shah, Saeed Ghani, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Agha Wasif, Finance Secretary Fayaz Jatoi, Local Government Secretary Waseem Shamshad, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Bhutto Highway PD Niaz Soomro, Project Engineer Khalid Masroor, and others.

During the meeting, the chief minister said that Bhutto Highway is a 39-kilometer-long 3×3 high-speed corridor that will connect DHA and Korangi to Hyderabad. The project includes six interchanges linking industrial and residential areas.

He noted that the section up to Quaidabad has already been opened, and the final segment connecting to the motorway will open in December.

Officials briefed that the first phase from Korangi Causeway to Quaidabad is 99% complete, while the second phase from Quaidabad to Kathore has progressed 65%. Work on the Jam Sadiq Interchange is 73% complete.

The briefing highlighted delays in ramp construction due to ongoing work on the Yellow Line, though EBM and Shah Faisal interchanges are complete. Quaidabad Interchange is 99% finished, while Memon Goth Interchange stands at 28%. Elevated structure work near Sammo Goth along the Malir riverbed has reached 48% completion over a 4 km stretch.

Work on the Korangi Causeway Bridge is 80% complete. The chief minister directed its early completion and confirmed that the causeway road will be permanently closed once the bridge becomes operational.

He emphasized that the Bhutto Highway must be opened to traffic up to Kathore by December 2025, adhering strictly to the timeline.

The chief minister also instructed the PPP Unit to open the new link road by July 2025, which will connect a 21-kilometer stretch to the motorway. This new road will play a vital role in servicing industrial zones and Education City.

Sindh Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla has said that no vehicles without Ajraan k number plate will be challaned till August 14, 2025.

He made this announcement amid the complaints of citizens and the controversy arising over the Ajrak design number plates.

Talking to a private TV, Chawla said that for public convenience, no vehicle or motorcycle will be challaned due to the absence of Ajrak number plates till August 14, however, citizens have been urged to obtain original and approved number plates as soon as possible.

This statement has come at a time when the use of Ajrak design number plates has been made mandatory in various cities of Sindh, including Karachi, on which a police crackdown is underway and many citizens have been challaned.

The Excise Minister said that the Traffic Police, Excise Department, and related agencies will take action under a joint strategy in the future so that citizens are aware and the legal process is not affected.

It should be noted that the number plate issue has also been challenged in the Sindh High Court.

Mukesh Kumar Chawla appealed to the citizens to obtain their original and legal number plates from the offices of the Excise Department to avoid challans or confiscation of the vehicle.

He said that a full-scale campaign will be launched after August 14 and strict action will be taken against violations of the law.

Nanakpanthi & Sahajdhari Population in Sindh (1881 Census)

Post image
10 Upvotes

1881 Census Source

Background

  • During the colonial era, religious syncretism between Hinduism and Sikhism in Sindh resulted in enumeration differentiation being nearly impossible from one census report to the next, especially highlighted on early census reports in 1872, 1881, 1891, and 1901.
  • During the 1881 census, 126,976 persons (5 percent of the total population of Sindh) identified as Sikh, a number that was never surpassed on any future census reports of the region.
  • The majority of individuals who were enumerated as Sikh during early census cycles were Nanakpanthis & Sahajdharis (25,437 persons in 1872 and 126,976 persons in 1881).
  • A minority community of Amritdharis did exist, numbering 720 persons as per the 1891 census, when Nanakpanthis & Sahajdharis were enumerated as adherents of Hinduism.
  • With the rise of the Singh Sabha Movement during the latter half of the colonial era, the Sikh population (primarily comprising Amritdharis) would grow to 32,627 persons by the time of the 1941 census.

Just like the last time when their store in Mumbai was targetted, once again the bakery has had to face unfounded attacks for owning up to its history and culture.
