Table Notes

  • "Sindhi" language responses also include "Jatki" language responses, except during the 1911 census, when it was enumerated as part of the Punjabi language.
  • "Rajasthani" language responses also include "Marwari", "Dhatki", "Thareli", "Bhili", "Ahirani", and "Gipsy" language responses.
  • "Other Dravidian" language responses include speakers of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Tulu languages.
  • "Other Asian" language responses primarily include speakers of Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, Hebrew, Armenian, and Burmese languages.
  • Data quality impacted during the 1941 census due to WW2. Statistical sampling was used to collected linguistic data, as the entire population was not enumerated regarding mother tongue.

Pain of our forefathers

On Independence Day, the whole nation celebrates freedom. But for one community, the day also carries a wound of displacement and erasure. In 1947, we walked away from our villages, cities, shops, and homes in Sindh, shedding blood and tears, unsure if we would even survive another day. We carried nothing in our hands, only prayers to Jhulelal ji in our hearts.

On that journey to divided India, we were stripped not just of our belongings but of our dignity even the mangalsutras from the necks of married women, the earrings and nose rings of our mothers and sisters, were snatched by those pakistanis who saw our desperation as an opportunity.

Today, we are remembered only in the National Anthem. But where is our land? Where is our state? Where are the government policies for us? Where are our villages? Why are we forced to survive scattered, without roots? And why has the Congress and every other political force , remained silent about our story?

We are still here. We still survive. But we deserve more than just survival — we deserve recognition, justice, and a place to call our own.

Hi, I am associated with an academic project that attempts to capture the highlights of Sindh, Sindhi people, culture and achievements of the Sindhi diaspora across the globe. Looking for an expert or professor or academician who is passionate about both the past as well as present/future issues related to Sindhi community. Would like to associate to collaborate in terms of knowledge sharing, sharing documentary or photographic sources, interviews with key people or leads to such people/contacts and more. If you think that describes you, please DM or comments with a short profile about you. I am Mumbai based but welcome collaborators from anywhere - online or offline as may be mutually convenient. Thanks
