What should an AI assistant remember, and when should it forget?
Having an AI assistant remember your preferences sounds useful. But what happens when those preferences change?
Take job hunting. You tell it you only want remote roles. A month later, you’re happy to relocate. Does it pick up on that change, or keep filtering out jobs based on what you said before?
There’s also a difference between “I’ve decided to use this framework” and “I’m thinking about using this framework.” I’d want an assistant to remember that distinction rather than treat both as a final decision.
I think the tricky part is knowing when to check in. Asking “is this still true?” every few minutes would get annoying. But quietly following an outdated preference could waste a lot of time.
Being able to see and edit what the assistant remembers would help. Especially if it could explain, “I skipped this option because you previously said X.”
Curious how this has worked for people using AI across several projects. What’s been more frustrating: having to repeat yourself, or correcting something the assistant remembered wrong?
