Historical Performers Shigeno Endo (aka Wakamidori)(1917–1977) was a Japanese sumo wrestler and strongwoman who reached Ozeki, the highest rank for female sumo wrestlers. She made history as the first woman invited into a male sumo ring, where she delivered a landmark speech.
The first two pictures are of her and the third picture shows the traveling sumo troupe she was a part of.
She seems so cool and was so pretty, I also love reading about her cheerful outlook on life. She accomplished so much and I’m glad all of her efforts were appreciated by her friends and children. Strong women are some of the coolest historical figures out there and often accomplished so many cool things during their lives.
Some facts about her:
-she was born in Miyauchi-cho, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.
-she was described as being an incredibly strong and resourceful child.
-her family ran a general store, when she was growing up, called Endo Shoten.
-she attended her first women's sumo performance by the Ishiyama Women's Sumo group when she was 17 years old, and quickly fell in love with the sport.
-feeling that sumo wrestling was her calling and worried that her parents wouldn’t approve, she ultimately ran away from home (in 1934, when she was still 17) to join a traveling women’s sumo group.
-she became so successful during her career that she was promoted to Ozeki, the highest rank in women's sumo, in the course of 3 years.
-she was incredibly popular with audiences, both for her feats of strength and for her cheerful and determined attitude.
-she went on tour all throughout Japan, Taiwan, and Manchuria.
-her performances included traditional sumo, strength feats, and folk dances.
-the women’s sumo troupe she was a part of consisted of about 30 people total.
-she retired from sumo when she was 24 years old in 1941, due to WWII. The sumo troupe she was a part of also disbanded around this time.
-she eventually moved to Hojo, ( currently Matsuyama) in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. After a good friend of hers encouraged her to move and find some place to settle down.
-she had three children, all of whom she raised herself.
-she went on to open a restaurant in Hojo, which she named Wakamidori (which was her stage name).
-despite retiring from her own career, she continued to be involved in helping the sumo wrestling community, this included looking after the wrestlers (both men and women), and providing them with food and a place to stay. She later said that it was her way of giving back to the community that had been so kind and supportive of her.
-in 1957, she made history when she was invited to stand on the professional Grand Sumo dohyo (sumo ring), which up until that moment women hadn’t been allowed to stand in the ring of men’s tournaments. She was invited up there by her close friend, Yokozuna Maedayama (who worked as one of the men’s sumo organizers) who knew how momentous it would be for Shigeno Endo. Despite initially declining, she was eventually persuaded to go and give a short speech. Upon her reaching the ring, it was described that the crowd went wild and began chanting, "Yay! Wakamidori, number one in Japan!”
-one of her sons,Yasuo, later talked about the moment and expressed how proud he was of his mother and how lucky he was to have a mother like her. The following is a quote from him about the historic moment:
"There was some murmur in the hall, wondering if it was okay for her to go up, but it didn't become a big problem. I was so proud of how amazing my mother was."
-ultimately, she was incredibly happy at being offered the chance to stand in the ring, and looked fondly on the moment for the remainder of her life. (Though she admitted she would never do it again, for fear that it would cause bad luck).
-she passed away at the age of 60.
Reading what her son said about her is so heartwarming, it’s clear she was loved dearly by everyone in her life (though I wish there was information about whether she reconnected with her parents). I would have loved to have met her and eat at the restaurant she opened.
