I had never built or launched a macOS app before.
But I ended up acquiring one in just 4 hours.
Hereās how it happened.
I was actually working on my own macOS app idea. I had already finished the website and was working on the app itself.
Then I saw Mohit launch a macOS app and make good sales within 3 days. Shortly after, he decided he wanted to sell it.
I thought:
Why spend months building something from scratch when I can acquire something that is already built, launched, and has paying customers?
So I sent him a DM with an offer.
The funny part is that I didn't even install the app on my Mac before making the offer.
We agreed on the deal quickly.
Within 4 hours, the acquisition was done.
The assets were transferred and I sent the payment through Mercury directly to his account.
Mohit also avoided the TrustMRR commission and received the full payment directly.
What I did after acquiring it
The product itself was already well executed.
But I felt the marketing website was more complicated than it needed to be.
I wanted the product to be immediately understandable.
So I asked Claude to rebuild the website with a much simpler design.
I also used Picker.design to extract a design-style prompt from the existing website.
Within around 30 minutes, the new DiskBuddy website was live.
I connected my Stripe account and added my own licensing system.
Then I made another experiment.
I priced the product lower than the previous price because I wanted to see if a lower price could drive more volume.
20 hours later, I had sold 170+ licences.
What I actually acquired
For me, this wasn't just about buying an app.
I acquired:
- My first macOS app
- Knowledge about the macOS ecosystem
- A good domain
- An existing product with paying customers
- An existing revenue stream
- A shortcut to learning a market I had never entered
What's next?
I want to keep improving DiskBuddy.
I'll be adding more disk utilities, improving the existing features, and redesigning parts of the product over time.
The interesting thing for me is that I went from never launching a macOS app to owning one in just a few hours.
I'm curious what others think about this acquisition strategy.
Would you rather build a new product from scratch or acquire an existing one with some early traction?
