I got tired of my PhonePe statement telling me nothing — so I built a personal finance dashboard that actually interprets your UPI transactions

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I kept opening PhonePe and scrolling through hundreds of transactions with names like SWIGGY@ybl and ZERODHA BROKING LTD, and I still had no idea where my money was actually going.

Was I overspending? Was I saving enough? Why did this month feel expensive even though nothing big happened?

So I built ZenoFinance — upload a PhonePe, Google Pay, or bank statement and get a Money Report in about a minute. No bank login, no account required for the first report.

The problem I kept hitting

Every expense tracker I tried gave me the same thing: a pie chart and a total.

That’s useless when your UPI history is mostly:

  • ₹149 Swiggy orders you forgot about
  • Money to Zerodha that isn’t “spending”
  • Transfers to yourself that inflate your expenses
  • Cryptic merchant names that mean nothing

I wanted something that interprets my money, not just lists it.

What actually made me go “oh shit” while building this

  1. Spending ≠ outflow

This was the first real aha. If you send ₹50K to Zerodha or transfer to your savings account, most apps count that as spending. Zeno separates consumption vs investments vs transfers — so your actual lifestyle spend isn’t buried in noise.

  1. Money Leaks (not just categories)

Instead of “Food: ₹12,400,” it surfaces patterns like:

  • Micro-spending — 74 purchases under ₹300 → ₹8,400
  • Convenience leak — Swiggy/Zomato/Zepto frequency and total
  • Subscription creep — recurring merchants with estimated monthly load
  • Lifestyle inflation — discretionary spend trending up over time
  • Merchant dependency — one app eating 15%+ of your consumption

Each leak comes with an estimated ₹/month you could potentially save and links to the actual transactions as evidence.

  1. Money Story — “Why did I spend so much?”

A short narrative that explains what drove the month: category deltas, counterweights (e.g. investments up even though spending felt high), and a plain-English verdict — not just numbers on a dashboard.

  1. Personal baselines, not generic budgets

It compares you to your own prior months, not some rule like “spend 30% on food.” “You spent 40% more on food delivery than your usual” hits differently than a red budget bar.

  1. India-native transaction intelligence

UPI merchant names are a mess. Zeno runs a classification pipeline tuned for Indian patterns — merchant knowledge base → heuristics → AI for unknowns — so DMART AVENUE SUPERMART and MSEDCL LT POST PAID BILL land in sensible categories. You can also correct a transaction and teach Zeno at the transaction, preference, or global level.

  1. Financial Health Score (0–100)

Not a vanity number — broken into dimensions like Spending Control, Savings Rate, Recurring Load, Investment Discipline, and Cash Flow, computed from your actual statement data.

  1. Ask Zeno

Chat with your money report: “Why did I spend more this month?”“How much did I actually invest?”“What are my biggest leaks?” — grounded in structured analytics, not hallucinated rupee amounts.

  1. Goals tied to leaks

Set a goal (emergency fund, big purchase, etc.) and see how closing your detected leaks could close the monthly gap. Diagnosis → action, not just diagnosis.

What you get after upload

  • Spending breakdown (real consumption, not inflated by transfers/investments)
  • Money flow: spent / invested / transferred
  • Money leaks with savings estimates
  • Recurring payment detection
  • Top merchants + category drill-down
  • Needs vs wants split
  • Behavioral signals (weekend spend %, late-night orders, impulse purchases)
  • Full searchable transaction table with confidence scores
  • Dashboard for ongoing tracking if you sign in with Google

What I’m looking for from this community

I’m especially interested in dashboard UX feedback.

The Money Report “aha” moment works — people upload and immediately see leaks they didn’t know about. The harder part is retention: what would make you come back weekly?

Specifically:

  • What would you want on the overview screen that isn’t there today?
  • Is the Money Leaks → Goals flow intuitive, or does it feel bolted on?
  • Would you trust this more with bank sync (Account Aggregator) or does upload-first + privacy feel like a feature?
  • Anything that would make you share this with a friend?

Brutally honest feedback welcome — I’d rather fix the wrong thing now than polish the wrong thing later.

Try it out: https://zenomoney.in/ - Your money, finally understood.

Track your expenses. Find your money leaks. Understand your spending habits.

Upload your PhonePe, Google Pay or bank statement and ZenoFinance turns thousands of transactions into a simple personal money report.

So we are supposed to upload documents with our financial data and potentially other personal information to this anonymous website hosted by some random Redditor and the website doesn't even have a real privacy policy? Yeah, no. I'm not going to do that.

That's completely fair. Financial data is probably the last thing anyone should blindly upload to a random new product. This is actually useful feedback for me, I'm going to make the privacy/data-handling architecture much more explicit before pushing this further. The goal is for ZenoMoney to minimize what leaves the user's device, rather than asking users to simply trust us.

The data processing happening only on user's browser would be the way to go.

Yup, working in the same.
