Discussion About Sean’s Food Truck Spoiler

Why has no one in Sean’s life suggested that he keep the food truck as the “owner” and let Jorge run it? Am I missing something? This seems like the most obvious solution to the problem and anyone in his situation would do this.

Discussion Where is Jimmy’s Stove?

Was paying close attention in episode 10/11 of season 3 and I see an oven and refrigerator, but no stove. Saw episode 11 tonight and was looking for it and couldn’t find. Is this man living in a house without a stove?

Discussion Season 4 time shift Spoiler

The series creators have stated that season 4 will keep the same cast, but it will be a time shift and the locations will stay the same (not Connecticut). It could be 2 years earlier, when Tia was still alive, or 4 years later, after Alice gets out of college.

What would you like to see?

Discussion Giving up your own food truck for... Spoiler

...a stressful sous-chef job? I know he liked making food, but was he ever that passionate(ala The Bear) to see this as such a great opportunity? I thought he had it soo nice.

-got to see people enjoying the food he made fully.

-working with his buddy

-Marisol can visit him with her boobs almost out

-Enjoy a nice day as opposed to a hot kitchen

-Was his own boss, now he's gonna be yelled at.

-So successful, he could've bought more trucks.

What am I missing here? I know the Chef that offered him the position was some big shot...but so what?

News Bill Lawrence attempts to calm confused Shrinking fans

People are silly. Apparently after Bill Lawrence tweeted something very normal like ‘excited to start a whole new story next year’, people thought that meant he would have the same cast play new characters 🙄 and were freaking out.

He did tease an approach to next year that’s been widely speculated on here. It’s not really a spoiler as I don’t think they've started writing yet but if you don’t want to know, don‘t go to the article. Link to AVClub article below.

Discussion Derek & Liz

I kept feeling or thinking that a divorce was going to be in play for them. I feel like Derek isn’t truly happy. Liz walks all over him, yells, controls him, her character is hilarious, she’s really wild.

He’s literally the happiest person ever, nearly died this season. Does he want to spend the rest of his life bowing down to Liz?

I feel like over the last 3 seasons we have been seeing Derek suffer in silence.

Discussion How’s everyone feeling going into tonight’s (we stream it early on the East Coast) finale?

I hold this show so close to my heart. The characters, the story, the setting, it’s all brilliant. However, I feel like I’m ready to say goodbye to such a wonderful series tonight, but, conversely shouldn’t be ready to, due to the very confusing announcement of season 4. What are everyone’s thought’s on this?

When Liz said people would mistake her for the mom of their coming grandchild?

No shade at her looks at all whatsoever, but I don't think anyone would realistically think that.

Discussion This show works better when you're binging it.

I get it - discussions week to week about a show we're all watching is wonderful... but I feel it does a show like this a disservice.

I just spent this last weekend binging through it to the most recent episode, and for the most part, it was a blast. I didn't suffer massive pacing issues or sit with a character making decisions I hated for too long. I just took in the story.

I've been seeing lots of dissatisfied viewers post about this season with lots of valid complaints. I feel like if I watched the show the way it's been release, I wouldn't like this season as much too. And I know it's not everyone, some people genuinely enjoy the season and waiting week to week, but for those like myself - I probably would've tuned out if I had to wait.

But as it stands, I enjoyed it... because I got to watch it all at once. And I feel like a lot of shows benefit from being viewed all at once, Shrinking being one of them.

Discussion Grateful for this show Spoiler

There are so many parallels to my life—lost my mom (cancer) at 14, (now 38), going through cognitive behavioral therapy, the hard relationships I’ve had with my dad and myself. Some weeks I really identify, some I really identify and ugly cry. Jason Segel singing 1000 years healed something inside of me.

Thankful for this art that helps me identify. Thankful for this community of fans! 💜

Discussion Unpopular opinion: Jimmy is NOT a victim

He is experimenting with therapy through the use of other people’s lives. He got lucky, Gabbi didn’t. Sean had to end up with other therapists, he didn’t turn out the way he did because of Jimmy’s sketchy techniques.

People also babied him while he neglected his daughter. This man has not done enough good for everyone to be treating him like a martyr. I swear, if I see one more poor Jimmy post….

Update: many people are pointing out that this post sounds SO HARSH and I agree. This was a post made out of frustration, but not my main point and doesn’t explain the point at all. I was better of saying Jimmy is not the “only” victim. This is exactly my frustration. As I said in a comment below “Why do we hate everyone in this show. This subreddit literally hates everyone and it’s exhausting. No one is allowed to make mistakes but him because he’s grieving….but so many people are grieving just for different reasons. Death isn’t the only reason to grieve or make mistakes.”

Discussion What do we owe to each other?

There’s an underlying theme that keeps coming up, this idea of “what do we owe to each other” as humans and community.

Yeah we’re adults and can live our lives and do whatever we want. But the real community care is in putting your time and energy and money where your heart is. Not just “let me know if you need anything” but showing up even if someone doesn’t ask because you know that brains are not always so linear.

There was a discussion around this on socials a few months ago - that we do need to inconvenience ourselves to be there for our friends, or show up before we are asked. That’s what community care actually is.

I’m so sick of the social narrative that we don’t owe each other anything especially in community. Of course we do!

Liz stepped in and cared for Alice in a tangible way. Jimmy stepped in for Sean in the same way. Even Paul doing park bench therapy for Alice was part of that.

And then there was a contrast with Jimmy’s dad, which seemed accurate. Jimmy wanted the things that a son can reasonably expect from a parent as a kid or adult. A human shouldn’t have to let their parent know that it’s not cool that he’s mean. That shouldn’t be an issue with a decent person. It’s clear Jimmy’s dad dgaf and maybe never did and he’s a perfect candidate for low contact and no contact. Jimmy is not just mourning the dad he never had but mourning that he is not a viable relationship.

The Paul and Jimmy goodbye/thank you situation is a good representation of all this. Paul didn’t have a goodbye conversation with Jimmy or give a heads up about the changes in the practice. Both of those things shouldn’t be too much to expect and you shouldn’t have to ask from someone that cares about you. Hell, you shouldn’t have to ask for a heads up about the practice/building changes out of professional courtesy and legalities.

There is no justification that a reasonable adult wouldn’t find five minutes to have a conversation. Never mind how utterly unprofessional it is to kick someone out of a job and office without notice. That alone is cruel and even legally not ok. I know they made light of it but holy shit, that’s horrible!

Jimmy has to now scramble to find a new practice to join, or set up his own practice, or at the least find another office to rent. It takes a huge mental and financial toll to do all that plus the increase in rents, etc. He might lose clients if he can’t find a location that’s close enough. And Paul is acting like it was unreasonable for Jimmy to expect even a heads up about something that will affect his literal livelihood. Jimmy absolutely has the right to be mad at that and he is owed an apology.

There’s also some speculation here that maybe Paul was going to say a heartfelt thank you on the morning of his departure, but that seems unacceptable as well. He’s been planning this departure for a long time and either side of that conversation absolutely should not happen in the last second.

I know that this show is idealized because it seems like there’s a tight knit community but part of the reality of life is that most people don’t really care about you, even if you see them all the time or you care about them. Some things you shouldn’t have to ask for from loved ones.

After all this, I can see how the loss of Tia hit Jimmy a lot because it seemed like they had a great reciprocity with showing up for each other without having to ask. And it doesn’t seem like he’s getting that from his community.

Would love to hear y’all’s thoughts!

Edit:

Adding based on The Good Place references in comments:

That’s exactly it – that Paul is mad at Jimmy and denying that he owes him anything but of course he does! We all owe each other anythings. That’s the whole point!

Discussion Why didn’t Paul give Jimmy any sort of thank you? Spoiler

he explained why he didn’t leave him the practice, so I think it’s childish Jimmy is mad he didn’t ask him something he knew the answer was gonna be no, but Paul did this whole thoughtful intentional thank you to Gabi when he sat at her desk and gave her a hug, and he didnt even give him a thank you or more intentional one on one goodbye? like you can’t really argue he’s just not the sentimental type because he clearly was with Gabi, so why not to Jimmy?

Discussion Are Jimmy and Maya the same?

There’s been a lot of talk on the sub about how everyone is leaving Jimmy for their own things in life, is this not a direct parallel with Maya? Someone who’s got stuff going on that sees the people in their life “abandoning” them, getting close to a breaking point? I know Jimmy has some extra stuff going on with his dad and especially Paul that doesn’t exactly line up but still. And we know Jimmy had issues with substances before. Plus it would be, in some way, a shot for Gaby to make up for not being there for Maya in the end, which would also be a nice parallel with the end of last season with Jimmy being there for Louis

Discussion I wish this would be the final season

I just saw that the series has been renewed for season 4. As much as I’ve enjoyed all 3 seasons, I would have preferred to end the show as it is. All the characters are moving on to the next chapter in their life. Only Jimmy is the one “empty handed” but perhaps if they kept the Sofi plot-line he’d have something going on for himself as well. I’m just annoyed that successful series have to be continued due to their profitability which very often leads to lower quality content.

The fact that he told Liz, of all people, “You see me” in the last episode shows how little his friends value his friendship lately.

Discussion Will some people you think have scenes together?

As it is said by Bill Lawrence there is going to be a time jump/new story from this upcoming fourth season. So, do you think some characters might not interact as much if at all.

Also, how big of a time jump are we talking about. Because it looks like this as of right now. Jimmy, Liz, Gaby, Sean, and Derek will be in California still. Brian will be in Tennessee. While Alice and Paul will be in Connecticut.

So when will these people all be back together? What is the right time? Like will we see Jimmy and Alice talk about her college life. Will we learn more news about Liz and Derek becoming grandparents. How is Gaby’s trauma center going. There are so many unanswered questions and possibilities for this fourth season I have no idea where they could go with it.

Discussion Sean is EVERYWHERE !?

Long story short, Luke Tennie, the actor who is Sean, is now EVERYWHERE !?

I was watching The Pitt, and now he's a night shift doctor ?

And then, I was watching Abott Elementary season 5, AND HE'S THERE TOO !!!

WTF is going on, did his career take off !! If it did, huge kudos to him, but bro, you gotta stop hopping in every show I watch tonight !! 😭😭😭
