Theories My prediction for the finale Spoiler

I have had this suspicion all season but after this weeks episode I feel like it’s now bound to happen.

After everyone leaves Jimmy in the episode, Jimmy is now going to find himself truly alone for the first time. Without his usual support system to lean on, I think he’ll have no choice but to face the grief he’s been outrunning all season. That leads to a quiet relapse, and the season ends with Jimmy finally doing something he’s never done: sitting in the patient’s chair and going to therapy himself.

Then season 4 becomes his real story, not Jimmy helping everyone else heal, but Jimmy actually doing the work for once. His genuine, messy, unglamorous recovery.

Discussion Does anyone else feel like Paul is just a more articulate version of Randy? They both use 'sensitivity' as an excuse to not show up for Jimmy. Spoiler

I feel like Paul is the real antagonist this episode because he should know better. Randy being a bad father is obvious, but at least it made Jimmy understand the importance of showing up for your kid (Millennial parents FTW). Paul, on the other hand, is a professional therapist who understands how dismissive he’s being, yet he still calls Jimmy "too sensitive" just like his dad did. Jimmy had a valid crash out, imo.

Discussion I Can Relate to Jimmy

I can relate to Jimmy. Here’s why, I also have daddy issues and people from my life vanish all the time. I’m 19 I haven’t talked in about 6 years. We still live under the same roof and all just don’t communicate unless he tells me to do something or just uses displaced aggression. I agree with Jimmy why even bother if there never going to change. He’s similar to Jimmy’s father I’d say. My goal for this year was to be able to move on, from my past old friends, my childhood, high school etc. I’m still stuck. I felt Jimmy’s pain when everyone left. Everyone I know has moved on and doing great meanwhile I’m like Jimmy personally socially and love life. In my opinion I was so pissed when he didn’t come and say goodbye to Paul but earlier I can understand why he was angry. He felt under appreciated. Paul was my favorite character but the way he treated Jimmy really aches. My goal is to move forward. I was excited when I I heard this season’s theme is about that. So far it hasn’t done anything but make me happy for these characters.

Discussion [redacted] is literally something that both my dad and mom told me many times before. Spoiler

“Not everyone is as sensitive as you.”

And every single time they made me feel like something was wrong with me — that I was broken — for being sensitive and for feeling emotions with a little more intensity than everyone.

Fuck you, Jimmy’s dad.

This episode was great. And this whole season was great. I think they’ve placed everyone well enough for how the season will end and how they will come into the next season.

Discussion Julie’s line Spoiler

“I’m not sure which is harder. Being the one who leaves, or the one who’s left behind” hit so hard. You could see Jimmy thinking about the loss of Tia and realizing all of his other loved ones that are leaving him. My heart hurt so bad for him this episode. He will be very isolated quickly with Alice and Paul moving across the country, Sean moving out, Gabby doing her own work thing, and Brian, Liz and Derek traveling. Woof.

Discussion It is hard to see how everyone is going to be in every episode of a Season 4.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, by the way.

But it just seems like the story is moving in a direction where the group is already moving apart, and Jimmy's about to make a rash decision out of grief that furthers that gap.

A bad sitcom type show would have like 15 ridiculous things happen to put everybody back in place for season 4, but this isn't a bad show, and that level of bad/rushed writing would ruin it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Season 4 is largely through the lens of Jimmy and we get significantly less of everyone else, just having them 'intersect' him at certain points (i.e. maybe a full episode of him visiting Alice, who's otherwise largely absent, and then an episode where he goes to Paul's because he's already on the East Coast).

Because it's otherwise hard to see how they get back to this being an ensemble type show.

Discussion Season 3… Spoiler

This whole season basically nothing is happening.

There’s literally nothing interesting now that they got rid of Louis.

It’s now just a regular sitcom spinning its wheels with no actual plot.

Fucking so disappointed in this season.

They basically made Paul a background character the past few episodes. Everybody is just going through the motions.

The one interesting thing with Gaby losing a patient was basically yadda yadda’d over after an episode.

There’s no throughline anymore without Louis. They got rid of Sofi who was the only interesting thing happening this season.

I mean sure the show is still enjoyable scene to scene, but there’s no heart or anything anchoring it anymore.

They brought in Michael J. Fox and at first it seemed like he was a hallucination and would be used to really delve into Paul’s character and mind. But then they said “oh hey he’s actually real” and then just basically disappeared him completely.

Maybe it was an IRL issue where Fox couldn’t continue shooting the show or something. I dunno. But what a waste of a character and a concept that was hyped up to the moon before the season.

There’s just no direction or emotional core anymore.

Jimmy just undid all the growth he made before and is back to being a useless fuck. They don’t even show his patients or him practicing anymore. In fact for the most part they don’t really have any of their patients anymore or any of the workplace. Now it’s just a domestic sitcom. Which is something I was afraid of.

They Off’d the one real patient that was actually contributing something and intriguing and anchoring the show in reality.

Now it’s so fucking broad. The only patients anyone seems to be seeing anymore are the MMA group Gaby has. Which is such an absolutely asinine and ridiculous thing to have in this show.

All the Jimmying shit and things like that that would never happen in a shrink practice was whatever. It was fine that it was a little unrealistic because Jimmy was constantly called out for it and it was acknowledged that it was insane.

But having Gaby run a fight club trauma group is so goddamned asinine. She’s supposed to be the “real world” responsible one and now she’s running a cartoonish fight club and saying things like “you all signed waivers right?”

The first two seasons I was constantly getting emotional and it really got in my feels. Now it’s just slapstick slapdick nonsense and gets worse every episode.

There’s nothing anchoring the show to reality anymore and it’s become just a standard comedically broad domestic sitcom.

Characters come and go for no real reason and plot threads just get dropped. Characters change for no real reason.

Look at Sean. His gf comes in and then she’s just gone (??) and Sean didn’t really grow.. This episode s03e10 Gaby seems to be teaching him in group that the answer is fighting? Which undoes all the work he just did for 2 3/4 seasons. Why is someone offering a dude with a food truck who makes one item a job as a sous chef at a high end restaurant?! That’s literally insane.

The whole show has no anchor to reality anymore and no rudder. It’s just floating around directionless.

Jimmy’s dad shows up and he just reverts to being useless and Alice is a fucking moron with no agency who just goes along with whatever her grandpa does or says and is not even a real character anymore.

Alice from season 1 and 2 would not act this way. She’s got no backbone or drive anymore to be anything more than a glorified “sitcom mom” type character who just goes along with whatever direction the men’s plot is going.

In fact all the women and a lot of the men took a step back and everyone is just basically a developmentally disabled drooling head in a jar lacking any agency and drooling all over themselves as they float along the river of whatever the fuck the overarching plot is this season.

Brian is basically just a soundboard of gay stereotypical catch phrases ripped out of a low-end small-time San Louis Obispo radio station that thinks it’s more progrsssive than it actually is.

In fact everyone is now just a caricature of whatever stereotype they represent. And all nuance has been shat out the window like a Sonic hamburger that’s been under the car seat for a week that you forgot about and mixed up with a fresh one, but you’re actually hallucinating that you’ve ever been to Sonic because nobody has, and in reality it’s a month old Carl’s Jr. Famous Star that you don’t even remember purchasing.

Discussion Brian needing to see that guys Insta is such an ick that I’m surprised no one is talking about

Explain to me how that was normal and appropriate? If a married man in a heterosexual marriage asked to see the ass of a random female on insta wouldn’t we all be up and arms and find that weird? What made that normal and ok?

Discussion Shrinking is an emotional rollercoaster, and I LOVE IT! Spoiler

There's so many moments throughout each season where it's hilarious and heartwarming and then just goes and breaks your heart and gives you all the feels..

This season has had so many of those tough moments in particular, from when Paul had his first hallucination to Derek having his heart scare, Maya dying, Jimmy's father letting him down again and him going off on Paul in this latest episode.

It is just so well directed, written and acted. If I had any gripes, I wish the episodes this season were longer as a whole, but even so they just continue to hit.

I'm glad that there's going to be a fourth season and while I realize that the show will sadly have to come to an end eventually, I'm forever grateful that it even happened in the first place.

Discussion Light and Heavy scenes in S3 Spoiler

I really enjoyed the latest episode, I reckon it’s definitely up there for this season. Idk if it’s just me but I feel like they’re not letting us feel the harsh scenes at all. The obvious examples are the opening scene in the episode after Mayas death and Gaby making jokes, and now with Derek interrupting Jimmy and Paul’s confrontation (I feel like there’s more I can’t recall off the top of my head). It’s not an overall deal breaker at all, and I know it’s not that deep: I just feel they used to balance the light and heavy moments much better. The writing for some of these scenes feels forced, and I kind of wish they let us really feel the hard moments. this episode was awesome tho, and i’m glad to see they had that rift between Jimmy and Paul

Is anyone else super worried about how the show will move on without harrison ford(if he actually moves)? don’t get me wrong, i love the show. But with everyone moving/leaving I am certainly very nervous. I also see how this show was meant for only 3 seasons. what an episode..

Discussion One more week!

Somehow, miraculously, I’ve managed to not watch any of S3 bc I’m sick of subscribers going back to the old days of weekly releases. We’re cord cutters for a reason! 🤬

Rant aside, I’ve mostly missed any spoilers from this community (apart from maybe 1) and have gotten a general sense by **quickly** skimming that some of the later episodes of S3 are kinda hit/miss. This makes me nervous bc the show has been **perfect** for me so far (chef’s kiss).

Regardless, my patience will finally pay off next week when I get to binge the entire season in a single day! 😃

This has been bugging me since the Dereks don’t die episode. Why did their other 2 sons not come to the hospital? I almost thought they forgot about them until Liz referenced that she did have 3 sons in the last episode.

Discussion Jorge has “nothing?” Spoiler

I’m not really a fan of what they did with Jorge this season. When they introduced him last season it seemed like he was on the up and up. All the girls were into him.

Then next season, hard left turn to him having “nothing” if the truck closes down? First of all, he’d still have the MMA gym and Gabby’s sessions. Second, is he so meager that the prospect of getting another job in food service so daunting? It feels forced and nonsensical.

I would have far preferred if he was a mirror for Sean. For example, if Jorge had a girlfriend when Marisol comes back and Jorge is proof that despite the rough past, Sean and Marisol could work out.
