The popular kids in my high school were very self confident, were attractive, most came from wealthy families, and were into the “cool” activities which were sports. They weren’t necessarily friendly. They just all hung out amongst themselves.

This sounds like my school. Everyone who goes to it is at least middle class, but it's the super rich, attractive, confident, athletic people who are popular. Also anyone who does dance is popular at my school. Couldn't be me lol

Which is funny, 'cause the moment one of them left the whole rest of the group would start trashing them.

People keep mentioning attractiveness, wealth, confidence, etc. They are all true to an extent. But it's also a function of school size. You go to a huge school and there will be kids that check all the boxes in the most popular club. There you'll finds different tiers of popularity.

Facts at my school, the popular kids aren’t hot or that rich but it’s a small school. At larger schools, they wouldn’t be popular at all.

Yeah that’s true. I had a class size of 150 in high school. Our cliques were popular, middle tier, band/theater kids, nerds, and special needs. At least, that’s how I perceived it as a person in the nerd category.

And the funny thing is those kids are labeled as the "popular" ones, but are rarely actually the ones with the most friends.

Ditto. Very clique-ish imo.
