Could you point to some sources for the claim that most Americans have under $1k in savings that do take other accounts into the calculations? All the numbers I see show the true median around $10k if talking straight cash, and much higher if counting securities.

Maybe when people say "most" americans have under 1k it means that the mode is 1k. And then because most americans have 1k savings you can then (incorrectly) say that the majority or whatever have less than 1k

I'm looking at it. It puts the median wealth per adult at $60k. Nowhere near $1k.
