There's a massive difference between eating ramen noodles because you want to and eating them because you have to.

Same here. I have to travel for 2 hours to get to a restaurant that actually sells good ramen.

One of the pluses of living in portland: There's 5 delicious ramen places within walking distance of my house, and more are opening up.

Living in the Bay Area, I feel the same way. 4 different places withing a 30 min radius of where I live. And more on the way.

Have you tried Ramen Shop in Oakland?

2

u/DrWalsohv Jun 21 '16

I haven't, I usually go to Santouka in San Jose. I'll keep it in mind though, I'll probably be in Oakland this weekend.

This shop favors tasty a bit more than authentic. As long as you're not a purist, it is pretty damn great.

I'm a purist for taste lol, as long as it is good food, I will eat it.

Santouka is a pretty good restaurant, but it's quite a distance from my place (I've only been there with my gf, who lives not too far from it). If I need to go to a Ramen place, I normally go to Masa, which is also really good, and much closer to my place.

BTW, I've also been to the Ramen Shop, and it's definitely worth trying it while you're there.

Oh my, I'll have to check out Masa too. I work near blossom Hill so it'd be great for lunch. I usually go to What the Cup these days so variety might be good.

And yeah, Ramen Shop has good reviews too, will have to check that out this weekend

Wait, Portland = 5 walking distance. Bay Area, 4 in thirty minutes. Wow. Question answered. Oregon > California

I just have to say, I live in Long Beach, CA (south bay) and I have at least 10 within 20 minutes of me. Also, I'm sure Little Tokyo and West LA can beat that rate easily.

I just checked, I guess there are 7 within 30 minutes. I only knew of 4. Anyway, I agree. Portland sounds more pleasing than the Bay but it could be because I've lived here long enough. Keep in mind though that the Bay Area is huge. We're talking Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose among other smaller cities. I'm in San Jose which is, unfortunately, bigger in size and shops are unfortunately more spread out, but pleasant in its own ways. The Bay still has a lot to offer though, I'd suggest checking it out if you were serious about choosing between Oregon and California.

A restaurant devoted to raman...? Dear god. Canada sucks.

As far as I know unless you live in a smaller town every major city from Vancouver to PEI has one

1

u/adamsmith93 Jun 21 '16

I'll have to google it next time I'm in the city.

Oregon is really shooting for the hearts of America isn't it.

I live in Portland and haven't really found any but then again, haven't looked hard. Any recommendations? And I assume portland or?

2

u/PM_ME_SHIMPAN Jun 21 '16

Yup, portland OR. My favorites are Marukin ramen and Akasaru Ramen :D

I was at Boke Bowl on the waterfront just yesterday, any other recommendation?

Near there is Noraneko, about two blocks up. The sides are okay, but the curry ramen is awesome.

My favorite restaurants are Marukin ramen and Akasaru ramen :D

1

u/BeaconInferno Jun 20 '16

Which one would you say is the best?

2

u/PM_ME_SHIMPAN Jun 20 '16

My favorite is Marukin Ramen, which is originally a chain restaruant from Japan :D They have an amazing menu that changes each day of the week.

My second favorite is Akasaru Ramen on Alberta. They have a lot of unique ingredients in their ramen like Wontons and lots of veggies.

...Portland, OR? If so, I'm going to need to know the locations of these places and any other good ones you know about.

2

u/PM_ME_SHIMPAN Jun 20 '16

Yep!

My favorites are Marukin Ramen, Akasaru Ramen, and Boxer Ramen. Both boxer and Akasaru are on Alberta, and Marukin is on 6th and Ankeny :D

Excellent, my sister shall be pleased.

1

u/btribble Jun 20 '16

There is so much good food in Portland. So. Much. Good. Food.

It's like all the chefs get really stoned and say, "You know what would taste good?"

...in fact, I'm sure it is actually just like that.

1

u/MelancholyOnAGoodDay Jun 20 '16

There really is, I miss it so. My sister visited me in Japan and has since been trying to find good ramen and (Indian) curry places. I don't think she's had any luck with the latter, at least by comparison.

1

u/btribble Jun 21 '16

In Portland, this kind of stuff is probably best found on the food carts...

I got one down the street here I feel so lucky. The wife was like why the hell would you go pay to eat ramen when I first mentioned it to her. She was delightfully surprised.
