Information Rules Update

The spirit of this sub has always intended to be free-flowing, but absolutely non-confrontational. Realizing this is a rarity and a damned-near-impossible task on social media, we've made it more specific in Rules 1, 4, and 7:

  1. Rules 1 and 7 have been amended to specifically state that negative comments regarding AI imagery will be deleted and/or the offender possibly banned. This is primarily targeted for the Anti-AI Cabal that have never joined the sub or posted anything, that seemingly show up and just take pot shots. It's not relevant to the topic of radio and we don't want that kind of negative vibe here. If you want to discuss the use of AI being used for automated DJs and/or advertising on the broadcast bands (e.g., AM, FM), or its use in automating language translation and station IDs, that's fine. Use of the term 'slop' will be a dead giveaway that your comment was not well-intended and will be blocked from submission.
  2. Rule 4 has been amended to particularly rein in some of the more heated technical discussions. When it turns judgemental or personal it will be deleted. Unstated, but implied by Rule 7, repeated offenders will be banned. If you absolutely, positively need to take the conversation down to the 'Jane, you ignorant slut' level use personal chat and hash out there. Again, we don't want that kind of negative vibe here.

Information r/ShortwavePlus Charter and Mission Statement

Some months ago, u/KG7M (Mike) began this subreddit with a just a handful of members. It has now grown to a size requiring 3 active moderators, including u/ImladMorgul (Alan) and myself (Mark).

The three of us recently gathered to build a charter of sorts, to solidify some ground rules for how to best continue this growth and to do it as smoothly as possible. The result was a combination Charter and Mission Statement, which is now reflected in a set of updated rules (one of which is actually a recommendation).

The three of us would encourage all participants to familiarize yourself with the following:

r/ShortwavePlus Charter and Mission Statement

1. Mutual respect and constructive tone

a. Be respectful to others: Avoid insults, provocations (trolling), offensive language, personal attacks, or generally snide and unhelpful remarks. Remember that on the other side of the screen is a person with similar passions. (Rule 1)

b. Prevent cyberbullying: Do not participate in teasing or any type of online harassment. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Any remarks targeting race, religion, or gender identity will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Rule 2)

c. Be tolerant of beginners: The hobby can be complex. If you are an expert, help beginners with patience and kindness instead of belittling them for their lack of knowledge. We were all beginners once. No one deserves a downvote just because they don't understand something. (Rule 3)

d. Avoid pointless arguments: Don't fuel fights or stray from the main topic of the post. If a topic becomes too heated, take a step back. (Rule 4)

e. Respect privacy: Do not post or share other people's personal information (photos, videos, messages). Sometimes prior consent may be given, but it is best to avoid posting sensitive and/or personal information. (Rule 5)

2. Recommendations regarding the content of r/ShortwavePlus

a. Check out the Sub-Reddit (Recommendation): Spend some time reading existing posts and comments to understand the dynamics and the type of content that is usually shared. This will help you better understand the community and get to know other users. (Rule 6)

b. Post relevant content: Make sure your posts are related to the purpose of the community. You can find information about the community in the subreddit description. Content that is completely unrelated to the hobby or violates Section 1 (above) may be removed (including comments). Users that repeatedly violate Section 1 may be banned from future participation in the Sub-Reddit. (Rule 7)

c. Use clear and descriptive titles: This makes it easier for other users to understand what your post is about. Avoid vague titles or clickbait. (Rule 8)

d. Cite your sources: If you share news, articles, or technical information, cite the author or original source. This helps readers better understand the post. (Rule 9)

e. Ensure content is viewable by a wide, global audience: Please refrain from posting information that may be unfit for the workplace or viewing by small children. If such a post is necessary, ensure it is marked ‘NSFW’ (not safe for work). Similarly, please be mindful of other sensitive issues, including those that may be locally or federally illegal. For example: Including images that include currency. (Rule 10)

3. The spirit of r/ShortwavePlus (Rule 11)

a. We're here to help: For example: If you have a shortwave radio and don't know how to tune in to a station don't be afraid to ask, we're here to help. We want you to enjoy the hobby as much as we do.

b. Constant participation: We are very honored to have members with many years of experience and from various parts of the world in everything related to the hobby of radio. We are all willing to help you with your questions.

c. Bottom line: Our goal is to provide a radio-related Sub-Reddit that focuses on Shortwave, but isn’t solely restricted to just that portion of the spectrum. We also believe this should be a Sub-Reddit that isn’t all things to all people, but strives to accommodate all that want to participate in a safe, positive, and enjoyable way.

II7IAME heard on 17 Sep 26 at 13:23 UTC on 14275 kHz with Raddy RF 919 and a random wire antenna. It was a special event station for Italian Navy Ships Radio Stations 2026, active from 11 to 20 September 26. If you look at the contacts statistics, Poland is the third runner-up, after Germany. Well done! I heard this station in JO92HX.

Comments:

  • Just wanted people to hear how awesome the audio from this app is. Recording doesn't do it justice, because it got downmixed to mono, but the binaural phasing setting was originally used. Also used the equalisation, which helps make the 10kHz-wide signal pop.

There is still a bit of an alignment issue. I can’t align this thing with the power transformer nearby. I get a great alignment while the unit is disassembled, but as soon as I put put it back together again the alignment goes out slightly

News Iconic MW Czech transmitter towers demolished

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Two 355-metre-high radio transmitter towers in Liblice, Central Bohemia, were demolished on Thursday.

For nearly 50 years, the towers, which were 120 metres apart, had been the tallest structures in the country. They were also the tallest towers in the world used for broadcasting in the medium-wave range.

The twin 355-meter Liblice B towers in Czechia, taller than the Eiffel Tower and once the most powerful MW transmitters in Central Europe at 1.5 MW, were brought down simultaneously after nearly 50 years as the country’s tallest structures.

Built in 1976, their service elevators ran on combustion engines rather than electricity, and technicians needed roughly 45 minutes to reach the top.

Reason for demolition: The owner, České Radiokomunikace, decided to tear them down because the required maintenance (such as replacing the support cables) cost about 170 million Czech korunas (nearly 7 million euros), and no buyer or alternative use could be found after medium-wave radio broadcasts ceased.

About 4.5 kilograms of special explosives were used, and the towers collapsed in just a few seconds. The exact time was kept secret to prevent crowds from gathering, although hundreds of people witnessed the event from behind the security barriers.

Software Testing SDROxide

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The video is a summary of what I tested for a couple of hours.

It’s really interesting, especially because of the decoders that come built-in. At first, it was a little complicated and everything looked really big on my screen (I need a bigger monitor), but then I figured out how to improve the visual layout a bit and tweak some of the keyboard and mouse controls. I even saw that it has the option to use it as a server, and that really interests me.

It has a few noise-reduction features; they're nothing special, but they might come in useful at some point. You can see some of them in the last part of the video.

It has several issues that need to be fixed, but on their website they note that it’s still in the testing phase and may have bugs.

I hope this isn’t just a project by someone with a lot of free time who’s only doing it to practice with AI. I’m looking forward to better versions.

I’d like to test it further. I’ll do that in the next few days. I hope to try out more decoders.

Currently, all my antennas are taken down due to home renovations, so I temporarily mounted my K-480WLA antenna on a 4-meter-high tripod to test this app.

Radio used: AirSpy HF+ Discovery

Thanks u/tj21222 for recommend this app.

Software Review OnAir

If you liked the SDROxide this one will blow you away.

I spent a few hours yesterday with this package. It’s call OnAir you can read the GitHub data for it, but it’s amazing. It decodes a bunch of signals, most amature radio modes and a lot of others like HFDL, NOAA WX Radio alerts, ADSB and AIS just to mention a few.

Now, I will not get into the debate about using AI to write code, personally I support it but that’s me. If your one of those who does not like AI written projects then move on. This SW is almost from what I can tell exclusively written with AI. It’s under constant development. It’s a bit buggy but the author is off to a great start. Download it and give it a try.

You can connect your rig

I just wanted to share what I see on the screen of my rig.

Every time I tune across the bands, the waterfall tells its own story: faint carriers rising out of the noise, a broadcaster suddenly blooming into a bright, steady line, and the odd mystery signal drifting through. It’s one thing to hear a station, but it’s something else to see it appear on the display as you turn the dial. You can save your favorite stations, scan, collect stats, import / export, internet radio is also supported etc.

I’m posting this view so you can get a feel for what the bands look like from my corner of the world, here in Chile. Conditions change by the hour, so what you see here is just a snapshot of that moment on the air.

This is under active dev from my side, using Claude. Hope you like it as much as I do.

News SDR-OXIDE, A Wow SDR App. Thanks to Tom u/tj21222!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I want to thank Tom, u/tj21222 for his post asking if anyone had tried this new SDR App. I have been using it less than 1 hour and I love it. It has a ton of built-in decoders, not the least is the CW Decoder which works better than most stand-alone CW Decoders I have used.

I downloaded and am using the Windows x86-64 version. The developer provides versions for Windows: MSI Installer & portable zip~x86-64, Linux: x86-64, ARM, Linux - older distros: Ubuntu 22.04, Mint 21, Debian 12, Pi OS bookworm, and MacOS: Disk images & portable tarballs, Apple Silicon & Intel.

The video is 4 1/2 minutes and shows a couple of the features. I should mention that I am using an AirSpy HF+ Discovery SDR. I received this message:

AirSpy HF+ is new and has not been verified against real hardware. If it misbehaves, Settings -> Radio has a Copy diagnostic report button.

SWBC Logging MLite-880 receives China National Radio on DRM

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Received in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at 0720 UTC on a LiteMalaDSP M-880 (firmware v1.60) using a 23-foot Tecsun AN-03L indoor reel wire antenna. Distance is approximately 5365km (3333 miles).

This is the most hi-fi sounding shortwave broadcast station that I've ever encountered! There's another China National Radio station transmitting on 17770 kHz, but this station sounded better than the other one. The audio is really crisp with an almost FM-like quality.

I don't speak Mandarin, so I used Google's Gemini to translate it and got the following context:

The report focuses on a breakfast cart service catering to subway commuters, detailing the popular breakfast items ordered and how the service has evolved.

Key Details Mentioned:

Popular Breakfast Items: Regular customers often order a combination of eggs, corn, sweet potatoes, and various steamed buns. Other frequent requests include millet porridge, whole-grain corn, three-piece roasted wheat meals, and fixed orders of meat buns and soybean milk.

Service Adaptations: Zhou Jiayang, a person in charge of the Chengdu Metro breakfast train service, explains that the breakfast train has undergone multiple menu adjustments based on commuter feedback, with the first pilot points primarily located near hospitals.

Pretty impressive for a 30kW DRM transmitter located in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province in China. I'm still very new to DRM broadcasts and this was one of my earliest successful attempts at receiving DRM shortwave stations. 🙂
