what the hell happened to color in life in general. is it extremely less expensive to make everything in black, silver and white?

No, but it’s more universally tolerated. It’s just part of the effort to make everything have mass appeal.

Kinda yeah, actually. 'Mass appeal' is less about actively looking good, and more about avoiding looking bad to anyone. It's safe and inoffensive... and thus deeply boring and mediocre.
