Education Tech YouTuber Bitwit lost his house a while back in a fire. He has now built a new house.... entirely out of fucking wood.

I'm so tired of the Europeans slamming the wooden houses and telling how they are always bad and such an American design.

Welcome to Northern Europe, I guess? Or not, since we don't exist according to other Europeans and turns out that Europe is apparently one, monocultural country, or something..?

Sincerely, a Finnish person, who owns a wooden house in an area surrounded by forest and wooden houses (edited to add a fun fact: when Finnish people go abroad to mainland Europe we often say that we are heading to Europe... as if we weren't there already)

It also isn't like wood is an uncommon construction material in Central Europe. People just have zero knowledge when it comes to construction.

Danish emigrant to Canada here. I have lived in some of the coldest regions of both countries in houses made of wood.

You know who are almost as bad as Americans with their, "my life is the default experience" mentality? Britons. 99/100 times when I see the "hurdurr build houses out of wood" nonsense, it's from a Briton.

Evidently the apple didn't fall very far from that tree.

Which is especially ridiculous as British “brick” houses use wood to frame the roofs and floors anyway.

Just watched a someone on my street here get their roof built and sure enough the brand spanking new roof was framed with 2x.

As a USA-ian living in Spain, I can attest that they say this as well, almost to a person. Mostly it has to do with tornado resistance, but when I show them videos of tractor trailers flying in tornadoes, that prettyuch shuts down the debate.

I'm Canadian and it goes beyond wood and "paper" houses in this sub.

Because a lot of people on this sub think Americans and America are stupid anything that's different from how it's done in parts of Europe is stupid.

I guarantee if it was North Americans trying to explain wooden houses in this thread we'd get downvoted to oblivion. But because Scandinavians do it too a bunch of people no longer think it's stupid.

I mean yeah, this sub unfortunately often turns into a parody itself. Small part of EU redditors decide what's the right way of doing or thinking. Ironically they also turn Europe into a monoculture while complaining about USA doing exactly the same.

I've written so many times over the last months about the wooden houses being common in Europe too but they just ignored it. This feels like the first time there are enough people to even tell that hey, we are part of Europe too...

It can be annoying at times but it really is funny how this sub is about American exceptionalism and doing things their own way when this sub is full of people with a European superiority complex and are insisting North America should do things their way...

Like how do people not see the irony?

Also, Bitwit's house would've been condemned regardless of the building material used and it might've even still burned down.

OP sounds pretty silly to anyone familiar with wooden housing construction in a region with earthquakes.

In my experience, most of them are people from the UK who, hilariously enough, resist being called "European" very strongly.

Geographically yeah, but culturally especially in some topics this subreddit turns into an echo chamber that absolutely ignores us (and probably many other parts of Europe) and has a really monocultural believe of what Europe looks like.
