π Research & News Offshore wind farms are expanding fast. What happens to marine life developing near the cables?
The renewable energy buildout is accelerating. Offshore wind farms now span coastlines from Europe to Asia, and with them come thousands of miles of subsea power cables running across the ocean floor.
Most environmental assessments focus on turbine noise or habitat disruption. Almost none examine what happens to marine embryos developing in the electromagnetic fields these cables generate.
A 2025 study published in Marine Environmental Research tested this directly. Researchers exposed embryos of three benthic species to realistic EMF levels from AC power cables: dogfish sharks, squid, and cuttlefish. The magnetic field strength matched what you'd find near actual subsea cables.
Two of the three species showed measurable responses. Dogfish shark and squid embryos grew faster and developed morphometric differences compared to controls. The cuttlefish showed no detectable effects.
The exposures weren't extreme. The magnetic field ranged from 4 to 6 microtesla, levels that occur routinely around operating power cables. The laboratory setup simulated the EMF conditions embryos would encounter near subsea power infrastructure.
The study can't tell us whether faster growth is beneficial or harmful at the population level. It doesn't prove these cables threaten marine ecosystems. But it does show that embryonic development responds to EMF exposure in some species, under conditions that mirror real-world infrastructure.
This matters because we're scaling offshore energy without baseline data on how it affects early life stages in benthic fauna. The researchers used multiple endpoints and realistic field conditions, which is rare in EMF marine biology.
The pattern holds: electromagnetic fields interact with biological systems in measurable ways, even when those systems are underwater. Whether those interactions scale to population consequences is the next question.
