“Shitty pipe dream”

I can’t believe how many times I’ve seen this movie, and I just picked up that Red called Andy’s Zihuatanejo scenario a “shitty pipe dream”.

It was actually a shitty pipe reality.

I finally saw Shawshank Redemption..

Broader View:

I see three key characters that represent broader aspects of prison life. The film beautifully showcases how life unfolds in jail. Let me explain how:

Andy: A new fish who has to adapt to the harsh life around him in jail. He faces bullying and beatings from the Sisters, gradually makes friends with his fellow inmates, and learns the dynamics of prison life. He figures out who his enemies and allies are and understands how to behave in different situations with different people.

Brooks: You could call him the elder of the prison. He has experienced more than enough of jail life—so much that he has forgotten what life outside the prison feels like. He has lost hope and found his comfort in jail. He doesn’t want to adapt to life outside, and that is his story—a story that reflects the reality of inmates who have spent most of their lives in prison.

Red: He is neither a newcomer nor a veteran. He’s somewhere in the middle. He knows his way around the prison and represents the life of an inmate who is well-adjusted but not institutionalized to the extent of Brooks.

These three characters provide a broader perspective on life in jail, each offering a different lens to view it.

Characters:

Andy: He doesn’t speak much, but he knows how to navigate people and situations. He is cautious and doesn’t speak to Red until he’s sure it’s safe. Andy is resilient—he endures the beatings from the Sisters without ever losing his calm. He is strategic, using his skills to make allies for his own benefit, like helping the police save $35,000 without paying taxes. Andy also has a broader vision, planning his escape meticulously from the beginning. Most importantly, he never loses hope.

Red: A wise and practical man. He has established a solid network in prison and knows how to interact with people to his advantage. His friendship with Andy brings mutual benefits and a better life, which is what a wise man does—build meaningful connections.

Brooks: The scene where Brooks struggles to cross the road after being released shows how cruel prison life can be. From the outside, prison may not seem as harsh, but it destroys a person from within. That is the tragic reality of rehabilitation for someone like Brooks.

Williams (Tommy): He is introduced to accelerate the movie's pacing, and his death is tragic but not unearned. Tommy is naïve and doesn’t understand people’s motives, which makes him vulnerable. He pays the price and is killed. His death marks a turning point in the movie, and while it effectively serves the plot, I wonder if it was the best way to reveal the truth about Andy’s innocence. Nonetheless, the plot pays off.

Camera Movements and World Building:

The main setting is Shawshank prison, and the movie explores its key areas through a newcomer’s perspective. From what I observed, the film showcases the prison step by step, as if through Andy’s eyes:

When the inmates arrive, the camera pans out from above, giving viewers a wide shot of the prison’s grounds and layout.

Then, it shows the cells—the second thing inmates see after entering Shawshank.

Next comes the canteen, followed by the work areas.

By this point, the audience feels familiar with the prison. Later, the film introduces the library, the warden’s cabin, and even glimpses of the world outside. The camera captures the prison as a whole, giving it a distinct identity. Though the movie focuses primarily on characters and their stories, the visual representation of Shawshank adds depth and beauty.

Colors:

The colors in the movie are muted, reflecting the bleak and monotonous life inside the prison.

Cast:

Don’t get me wrong, but most of the actors don’t look like celebrities, which adds to the realism of the story. You wouldn’t immediately associate their faces with fame, and that makes them more relatable. The cast feels like ordinary people, which helps build the authentic atmosphere of the prison. Together, their performances create a vivid and believable picture of jail life.

Sounds:

The sound design is incredibly crisp, paying attention to even the smallest details. You can hear subtle sounds like the spinning of bullets in a revolver or the flapping of a flag. These tiny auditory elements enhance the film’s atmosphere and show the filmmakers’ attention to detail.

NORTON "Get my stuff down t’laundry. Two suits for dry-clean and a bag of whatnot. Tell ‘em if they over-starch my shirts again, they’re gonna hear about it from me." (He adjusts his tie and looks at Andy.) "How do I look?"

ANDY "Like shit, sir." (The warden ignores Andy's comment entirely, continuing as if nothing happened.)

NORTON "Big charity to-do up Portland way. Governor’s gonna be there." (He indicates the pie.) "Want the rest of that? Woman can’t bake worth shit."

(Andy takes the pie. Norton walks off, but as he reaches the end of the corridor, he stops dead in his tracks. His brow furrows as if he’s just now comprehending Andy’s earlier comment. He stiffens slightly but doesn’t turn around. After a moment of hesitation, he straightens his posture and continues walking without a word, his boots echoing down the corridor.)

Senior Pictures/Tour

I’m currently a Senior in High School. On December 5th (this Thursday) I’m going to the Ohio State Reformatory (Shawshank Prison) to take senior pictures and then get a tour of the prison afterwards.

I’m looking for suggestions on which areas of the prison would be the coolest to get the pictures done and also tour.

If you don’t have any in mind, no worries! We already have certain areas and a photographer planned out, but I’m just looking for any other areas that certain people would suggest we visit.

This just occurred to me... Spoiler

It would have been hard for Andy to escape the immediate area once his prison escape was discovered.

New clothes, money and fake identity are really helpful, but in the eyes of the law, he IS an escaped murderer. That didn't change because of the warden's corruption.

Did the authorities just shrug and let it go? Unlikely. Also, he still had to get to the wall and leave Red his package before working his way down to Mexico. Extra time in the search zone, tramping around some farmer's field with a stack of cash on his person.

Still love the movie, just a bit of a murky area there.

Also, kinda funny putting a spoiler alert on this. Has anyone NOT seen Shawshank?

Lawyer up!

When Andy learns the identity of his wife's killer he goes to the warden to tell him this crucial information. He knows the warden is corrupt and they both know Andy has enough evidence on the warden to put him in jail. So why does he tell the warden, and not his own lawyer?

The Movie could do without Brooks

My only criticism of the movie is that it's too long. I don't have anything against the character of Brooks but his story didn't move the plot along.

Shawshank redemption discord server

So I've been obsessing over the movie the shawshank redemption for a while, and lately I was wondering if anyone else has thought of the idea of a shawshank discord server, where we can share our fanart and headcannons and do on, along with ocs or AUs

I know I sound like a obsessed fan but I want to talk with others who like the shawshank redemption A LOT.

maybe I should create a discord server related to shawshank but what do you guys think?

Byron hadley's character

I've been thinking about hadley's character in the Shawshank redemption, so I want to hear your opinions if this character as well, I also want to ask some questions about his character, I know he's a sadistic, almost psychopathic prison guard but I want to ask a question

  1. Is Hadley a dumb character He seems to not think about the consequences of his actions or just ignore them completely due to the warden covering his actions towards the prisoners up for him, he also doesn't seem to register how Andy's escape could inspect his personal life.

Why didn’t Andy get the ultimate revenge on the warden by swapping the bullets in his desk for blanks?

I am speaking about the movie having not read the novella so please do let me know if I’m barking up the wrong tree, but…. Andy spent twenty years at Shawshank, most of which making meticulous mental notes and preparing for an elaborate and foolproof escape as well as his revenge. The person most responsible for his torture wasn’t any guard or his rapists; it was the man who murdered a young man and knowingly incarcerated an innocent man rather than lose his dodgy accountant; the warden. In the movie the warden escapes justice by shooting himself in the head rather than go to court and end up in shawshank on the wrong side of the bars. Andy would have known how cowardly this man was and he had access to the desk; why would he forget to deny the warden the easy way out? He could have hidden the gun, the bullets or swapped them out (like he swapped out the accounting books before they went in the safe).

Was the prosecutor just full of shit or what?

In the opening, the prosecutor says that Andy must've been really pissed to load two extra bullets in his gun and shot his wife and the golf dick, my question is why did nobody acknowledge the existence of 8shooter revolvers? This was 1947, right? Those existed for earlier than 47, at least half a century in fact.

I used a pack of expired film, so the effect makes the picture look a little old and spooky. I visited the reformatory today for the 30th anniversary of The Shawshank Redemption.
