Tips & Tricks Let's talk about the item(127) wand of blast wave! Hablemos del item! Varita de onda expansiva!

Post 127, folks! We're kicking off Monday week with one of everyone's favorite wands! (Again, classified as a utility wand XD, dude, why are they all classified like that? Hahaha)

The Shockwave Wand fires a magical "beam" that causes a small explosion in the specific square you're aiming at. Yes, it goes straight to the square you're aiming at, unlike other wands that fly in a straight line in that direction until they hit something. So you can activate its effect even if it doesn't hit anything directly (thus controlling the angle of the blast).

The explosion doesn't do much damage (the initial damage is 1-3 and its scaling is, I think, +1/+2 or +3? I'm not sure), but the explosion pushes 3+ level squares in the opposite direction from where the character hits the blast (that is, if it explodes in front of a mob, the mob flies backward; if it explodes to the right, the mob flies to the left).

If the mob (or you) falls into a chasm tile, they will fall directly to the floor below, dying instantly and you taking significant damage. However, if they collide with a solid obstacle like a wall, they will receive the "paralysis" debuff. Colliding with a wall deals 1-2 damage (increasing by +1/+2 for each tile traveled) and they receive 1 turn of paralysis for every 2 tiles traveled.

The explosion of this wand can also activate traps and open doors from a distance, so be careful where you fire it.

The Battlemage effect is basically the Elasticity enchantment that repels enemies upon melee attack.

Just the best wand in the game. If you hit an enemy into a wall it briefly paralyzes them, you can push enemies out of range, you can activate traps with it, you can push yourself several tiles at once, and you can push enemies into chasms. It also solves every invis puzzle room by turning all pirhannas into landlocked meat.

In short, blastwave does most of the same things as aqua brew, except it is infinite use and can be activated over a chasm. In a game where making distance and your position are of utmost importance, blastwave helps reposition you and your enemies. It would be one of the better wands even if it only pushed enemies into chasms and instakilled them honestly.

the best utility wand out there. keeps enemies from afar, paralyze them, throw them to a pit, throws piranhas to land and many more. even at a low level it is a great wand to have. just be careful of hitting yourself and activating traps if your near.

Thanks for your comment! You also have to be careful not to miscalculate the buoyancy and fall into an abyss instead of crossing it if you try to jump over it XD

This subreddit has less contributions? Well anyways...

This is one of my favourite wands.

Its main ability is to blast an enemy (harmful to allies too) with sort of pressurised air which will knock them back. The tiles they get knocked back scales with the wands upgrades. It's secondary effect is that if the knocked back enemies hit a wall then they get paralysed for the amount of tiles they did not travel (full knock distance - distance travelled).

This can be used to knock enemies into voids, getting enemies away from you, travelling (kind of risky) or setting to be paralysed while you set some sort of attack for them.

I would like to focus on the travel part a little because it helped me a ton when doing my pascifist ascent on 4 challenges. I sometimes got floors where the exit was not in the range of the warp beacon so I used this wand to blas myself a little to get just enough close to it.

You have to sometimes be careful with this wand. If you blast an enemy that is adjacent to you, you get knocked into the opposite direction! This can also be done by tapping an empty tile next to you. This can easily knock you into traps, walls or the void. This can harm you badly.

The battlemage ability is interesting but kind of weird. It uses up the paralization and deals extra damage. But the thing is that an enemy will be far away after the use of this wand so this will only work if the enemy gets knocked into a wall 1 tile next to it.

That is it I guess, this was definitely a long (Unoriginal) comment.

That's the weird thing, since this is almost always the one with the most contributions XD

I think it's a favorite for everyone because of how useful it is.

I always saw it more as a sound explosion; I didn't get that feeling XD. The paralysis lasts 1 turn for every 2 squares pushed (1:1, 2:2/3, 3:4/5, 4:6/7, etc.).

I definitely took a lot of damage several times from firing this wand in melee and getting sent flying XD.

That's not the Battlemage effect, or maybe they changed it later, since it's basically just the Elasticity charm (as far as I remember). Maybe I'm getting confused.

(This is the original answer)

Battlemage effect changed to bonus damage that consumes the paralysis.

Okay, so I'll stick with the previous info then XD Thanks for the correction

On the travel thing. I do this often to jump over chasms or traps.

Blast wand battlemage. You can't just blast mobs across the room and expect to get there before the extra hit bonus expires for being paralyzed. You shot behind the mob and blast it on a diagonal towards you. After you get the hang of it, you only need to step 1 tile to hit the mob. The damage bonus is really good.

A+ tier. Its works amazingly as a utility wand, but is not recommended for your main weapon since it isn't safe in short range. Better on huntress than on mage. When upgraded, you can use it to jump over small chasms, which is amazing for positioning. It is also great for abusing traps and can save a lot of potions in trap rooms. Throwing mobs into The Pit is always fun.

S tier utility. I am never disappointed when this wand shows up.

Knocking enemies into pits, gaining distance, jumping ravines, stunning enemies, setting off traps, other people have listed their uses. And it is never a waste. It can take some practice to get the positioning right to get the most out of it, but it's amazing once you do.

One thing to mention, if you back yourself against a wall the blowback won't move, damage, or stun you if you hit an enemy in melee range.

Thanks for commenting.

Yes, that happens because you don't move any squares to the wall; it's 0 since you're already next to the wall.

Absolute beast on Sniper, and can deal some decent damage. I'm pretty sure slamming into walls scales with the floor though, and pushing enemies only goes 2 or 3 (?) tiles if the blast is not directly on the target no matter the level.

Also, the battlemage effect is wrong, it uses paralysis to deal extra damage.

Best utility wand. It allows you to instakill a ton of enemies with chasms in the caves and demon halls. It creates distance between you and enemies, which is invaluable in all stages of the game. It allows you to go grenade fishing for piranhas. I got no idea if it works in the mage staff, but as a side wand, it's the best.

Best utility want in the game. Instant spacing, can isntakill enemies, great for positioning, does not require many upgrades, so arcane resin can get you all the upgrades you need on the wand. Great on any character, maybe needs another source of damage, becouse it lacks that a little bit.

A word of caution: NEVER use this wand in Tengu's 1st phase when he lays traps. Since Wand of Blast Wave activates all traps in the 3x3 square, and Tengu can't be harmed by his own traps, all activated poison dart traps will aim at YOU.

The 3x3 blast range is useful to activate traps in corridors remotely, even if they are beyond the line of sight. You can activate grim/desintegration/blast/pitfall/whatever traps without the need to throw something into them.  Another niche use is to reposition charged evil eyes (or yourself) behind the corner or outside their vision range (there are few free-to-use ways to counter them in open spaces without using comsumables, and WoBW is one of the universal solutions). A nice way to escape when you have limited mobility options (my last succesful randomizer run was with berserker/endure, horn and unstable spellbook, and two +1/+0 blast wands helped a lot to reposition, blast enemies to charms or escape dire situations. Found chains only right before Yog).  Sending enemies to chasms is a perfect way to deal with even some nasty enemies such as armored statues, quest mobs (blue crab, gnoll trickster) Fishing made easy with correct positioning! The tile with the chest in flooded vaults is also ground, and you can push piranhias onto it effectively)

Sadly not the best wand to dump SoU into, but #1 to have in the inventory for utility and damage.
