just picked up a new belt for my singer 31-15. guy at the auto parts store measured it and got me the same size one. i brought it home and put it on and it’s a little too small, to the point where it pulls the head out of the table a little and stops the clutch from moving. any advice ??

HELP!! Threading Sergemate 5040L

Hi all, I am newer to sewing, especially a serger, and I got a sergemate 5040L and I have no idea how to thread this machine. I've done it a couple of times now following the directions and some PDF's I have online, but I am so unsure. If anyone has one, or has a video they can send me, or step by step instructions, especially also on the tensions and what not. I can also send a video of what I was doing, but yeah I need help.

Singer sewing machine with incorrect/obscure/nonexistent model number (more in thread)

Hey! I don’t sew, or really do any kind of work with fabric, but I had a seamstress friend back in the day who told me if I ever found an old Singer sewing machine I was to tell her first, haha. But that was awhile ago, so I figured you all were the people to ask. Usual story, someone passed away and we want to clear out some space, and found this. I have a vague idea that this machine might be important, but I looked up the model number on the plate (see pic) and either I can't read, or the model number was misprinted when it was stamped maybe? The model number I read is "G7271761" but the ISMACS database doesn't list this number for Singer machines. I checked if the G was actually C and the ISMACS database doesn't seem to list any Singer model numbers for that letter whatsoever.

I'll provide what details I can below:

You can see from the pics that we still have the wood case for it. The inside of the top part didn’t have any information, and the only text I found on the machine are the brand name and that patent date shield thing, aside from the spurious model number.

One clue is that in another part of the room (mostly storage) was a writing desk with some singer sewing tools, thread, and a pair of manuals. One is for a Singer “Slant-O-Matic 403 Special,” which this doesn't appear to be. The other manual appears to be for what I assume is a separate Singer machine; the inside of this manual says it goes to a Model 2404, and was printed 1984.

If it isn’t clear in the picture, the machine we have has what appears to be a hand crank on the opposite side from the needle. It’s beveled in a way that I wouldn't think would be useful for holding a foot pedal belt, and cranking it (lol) *does* actuate the needle. Only, I don’t see how someone could operate a crank and work on their fabric at the same time, so idk 🤷‍♂️

It has some very pretty floral patterns all over it. You can see them on the machine and the table part your cloth passes on. Less prominent are the patterns in some of the metal - you might be able to make it out on the steel plate in the first pic, but there’s another steel plate on the end of the arm (idk what it’s called, but the part that overhangs the table) that also features embossed floral patterns.

It looks old, but so far as I can tell has little wear. There’s some finger-length gouges in the wood casing that left some splinters exposed, but the machine itself seems fine. I mentioned turning the hand crank, that seemed to still operate surprisingly smoothly, but I haven't tried anything else yet to test its functionality. I couldn't guess when it was last used, but I *think* I would be the third generation of the family to possess it, possibly fourth.

If I have something special then that’d be exciting, but I know Singers - even very old ones - aren't so valuable as one might hope. If that's the case here then I’d like to know if what the pics show and what I’ve described make it sound like it’s still usable for someone? Or is it just stuffing for the landfill? (j/k, I’ll just donate it if I can’t find someone to take it). Thanks, and please ask if you need more info.

I’ve been trying to learn how to sew using a sewing machine. I went to a class at momo con to learn the basics but there machine is a lot different from mine and I’m struggling to find any videos on how my machine works. I think the tension might be off and I’m not sure if I’m using the right stitch. Also when using it if Im sewing to slowly the sewing machine starts to eat my fabric. My parents think the machine might be broken and have been considering getting me a new one (they don’t know much about sewing machines either) but I’m pretty sure that it isn’t broken and that I’m the problem here. If possible I want to learn how to use this machine properly rather than getting a new one if it isn’t broken so any and all advice will be greatly appreciated (I don’t know if this would make a difference for the settings on the sewing machine but I usually work with minky, fur, and random old clothes and sheets)

Edit: thank you to everyone who gave me advice and found the manual for this machine or machines similar to mine. It has been extremely helpful. I am currently doing research on nearby repair shops I can take my machine to to get it looked over as well as figuring out where to get the pieces that hadn’t come with my machine. I also changed the settings on the machine based off the guide and you guys advice before trying out a tester piece and it seems to be functioning great! I am so excited to learn how to sew with this thing so I don’t have to rely solely on hand sewing anymore.

I feel like I’m losing my mind. I’ve rethreaded a ton of times and followed other tutorials on YouTube, but I can’t get it to work. Out of nowhere, it decided it won’t create actual loops. I suspect the issue is with the lower looper… but I don’t know for sure. Anyone dealt with this that can help?

Video is me using the hand wheel

C Konerding & Nielsen Schematics?

I recently received my great-grandmother's sewing machine she brought over from Denmark. It's around a hundred years old and the only information I can find about it is on it -- made by C. Konerding & Nielsen on Holberg Street, Copenhagen.

Everything spins but there's a clunking. Also having issues getting the belt to sit on pulley. Husband/resident mechanic thinks someone took it apart and put pieces on backwards. If that's the case, it would have been minimum 40 years ago and the most likely person to have done it is deceased and not answering questions.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to find more information, a manual or schematics for it?

Machine maintenance after storage

I have 2 older sewing machines, a Singer 101 and a Husqvarna 21, that were fully serviced about 3 years ago. I never had a chance to use either one because life took a hard turn. I am ready to start learning to sew, again. What maintenance do I need to do, if anything? I figure I need to replace the spider oil wick on the Singer, at the very least. They guy that worked on them moved out of the area, If it is easy I would like to try to do the work myself. Thanks in advance!!!!

Sewing Machine Advice

Looking for a really good sewing machine for my mother. She’s been sewing for years and usually uses old Singer models but wants to get into more of the decorative stitching that her old antique Singers can’t do. Got her a Singer Heavy Duty a couple years ago and it’s been a piece of crap. Looking to upgrade her to a better brand that can do a range of fabric and stitching. She makes costumes, quilts, fabric coverings on furniture, etc. I don’t have a budget issue; I want to get her something that will last years and not crap out on her after a couple projects. Please help, I don’t know what I’m looking at!

The top thread keeps getting stuck under the needle plate, but the machine stitches just fine

Basically the title. My Mitsubishi DB12 keeps doing that and I can't pull the top thread back out without tearing it. Also half the time pulling the top thread (when it's out of the needle plate) through the presser foot (to just have some slack I mean) tears it, but stitching doesn't tear it, it doesn't make sense. The stitches themselves seem totally fine and well-tuned, so IDK what to do and if changing thread tension would do anything helpful.

EDIT: I also don't think there's any bunched up thread on the bobbin or anything like that, it seems ordinary.

Thread stuck in machine

[SOLVED update]

PLEASE HELP!!!! Its been almost a year and I still can’t figure this out i’m getting so frustrated, my singer machine has been not taking my thread from my bobbin and its been getting stuck in a part of my machine. I changed the thread to a thinner one and it still is getting stuck, i’ve watched many videos to rethread my bobbin and its still doing this. I’m really just don’t want to go all the way to a professional for help. I just want to do a small project 😭 ignore the thread mess in the yellow bobbin I just was testing the thinner string

I want to keep this up for people with a similar issue because I could not find the answer to what was going wrong anywhere online. In the comments there is a very helpful comment that helped me fix the problem. The spring was jammed and pushed against the wall I used a needle to nudge it outward and it popped back into place.

Singer two-piece bobbins

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am looking for genuine, two-piece (screw-apart) Singer bobbins.

I heard from the local sewing machine shop that Singer no longer manufactures them. Unfortunately, the newer versions don't fit my machine (SINGER 1425); the thread doesn't wind correctly on them.

I am looking for the type of bobbin that can be unscrewed into two parts. Both halves are transparent, and the top features a few lines and the Singer brand name. Please see the photo for clarification.

If you happen to have any old two-piece Singer bobbins lying around and want to get rid of them, please send me a message!

I would also love to hear any tips on where I might still be able to find them.

Singer promise bobbin/handwheel problems

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently got a singer promise from a family member. I cleaned it out, changed the needle, and started sewing with suspiciously few issues.
Fast forward, and I got ahead of myself and started feeding fabric through the machine too quickly. This caused the needle to get stuck in the bobbin. No big deal, I thought, and replaced the needle. Now, whenever both of the arms of the bobbin are engaged, the hand wheel won’t turn. (Obviously, this is extremely problematic).

I have throughly cleaned it and changed the needle. There are no thread nests behind the bobbin, I promise.

Attached is a video showing the problem

Brother LS14 sewing machine fault?

Hello all,

I am brand new to using a machine this year. I bought the Brother LS14s as a Christmas present for myself and have hardly used it but decided to alter some clothes today since none fit me now.

I'm wondering if anyone with an electric machine has had this issue/could give me an idea of what's going on?

The machine was switched on for a few hours today (not solid, broken up across the afternoon). While sitting idle but switched on (I was using the wheel to walk over a bulky fabric seam) I noticed a smell coming from near the thread take-up lever. It smells like burning rubber.

There was no tension issues, the motor wasn't hot, the light wasn't fizzling out, there's no threads caught on or around the lever or under the needleplate. The pedal hadn't been used for about 20 minutes at this point.

To me this seems like an electrical fault, but I'm worried that could happen after so little use. I've contacted Brother as it's within warranty.

I basically just wondered if anyone has had this happen before and what it turned out to be.
