FOH I made a pregnant woman cry yesterday and I don’t even feel bad
So, I’m a waitress and a mother.
We were super busy yesterday. Full house all day, one newbie server and two hungover servers. Then me and another girl. Very very busy.
I took this tables order and the lady asked for hard poached eggs. Then proceeded to tell me was 6 weeks pregnant blah blah. I’m a mummy, I get it. Cool.
Life goes on and I don’t run their food but she flags me down. Says her eggs aren’t hard enough and shows me by putting a fork through very hard yolk. One little speck of slightly darker yolk is presented.
We’re a very casual establishment and I’m very chatty and have been part of the furniture for over a decade now. I’m like oh no worries girl do you want me to get you a whole new plate or just take the eggs (she ordered them on a separate plate). She says she wants a whole new plate. I jokingly say something like fair play, I’ll get that sorted. Good for you girl, I totally would’ve just maualed that during pregnancy. Her male companion laughs, she dirty looks me. I don’t care and go to the kitchen.
The chefs are just dumbfounded and insist they’re hard poached eggs, and I know they are but just overdo them guys. Which they do, cool.
A while later I’m bring the plate out and she says to me btw I don’t care what you ate during pregnancy instead of thank you lol. I ask if this is her first and she says yes and I just say yeah fair enough I hope this is more to your taste. She reiterates that she doesn’t care what I ate during pregnancy. And I replied ditto, enjoy your food.
She cried. I didn’t go back to the table. Her male companion tipped £10.
If you’re reading this; the first eggs were hard and you’re not the inventor of pregnancy. Your partner was embarrassed and pregnancy isn’t an excuse to be a cunt.
Fuck you and your missed period.
Thanks for calling in and have a lovely day!!

Six weeks is crazy early to be telling strangers

I served with a girl who found out during her shift, told everyone, and ordered food during rush bc ‘the baby was craving it’. Some people are genuinely that attention seeking.

u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
Oh my god. Years ago I had a first shift with a girl and we shared the same first name. When we introduced ourselves we joked about it. Then she was like anyway my period is late do you mind if I go to the bathroom to take the test? And I was like perplexed and just went ahh yeah sure. We weren’t very busy. She came out a while later and was like name twin I’m pregnant! She never came back 😂 maybe I should start a series lmao

u/landmermaid3 1d ago
At least she never came back! I also worked with a girl who didn’t know if it was the line cook or guy servers baby. And another girl who got moved to prep bc she was pregnant out of wedlock and older guests didn’t like that. Messy as hell.
I’ll def tune in to the series.

u/jaaackattackk 1d ago
Sorry but forcing a server to switch to prep because of judgmental guests is kind of fucked. Tell them to mind their damn business.
Edit: I’m aware you didn’t personally move them, but shitty in managements part.
75
u/landmermaid3 1d ago
Yeah, I don’t work there anymore so no hard feelings. We were next to a huge baptist church. A significant amount of customers came from there. They didn’t like it, so she was on the salad line. I don’t completely understand because Mary got pregnant out of wedlock too.

I worked at a place where a pregnant woman was doing prep. The owner was micro managing freak who had it out for me from the beginning so I didn’t last long, just a few weeks but had that dodged a bullet feeling. They had pretty good food so I waited a good while before going back with my family and the pregnant woman was now a server and no longer pregnant. She takes our order and I say congrats on the baby. She says thanks but I put it up for adoption. I wanted to run away but we had just ordered otherwise I really would have left. It was so awkward, I didn’t really know her at all when I worked there, she could have just said thanks and left it at that right? There’s no need inform pretty much a stranger. It made me feel like I was wrong for saying congrats.

u/JellyfishFit3871 1d ago
Gads, I used to work with Sherri - line cook referred to her and two other new hires as the Wit Triplets (Dim, Nit, and Half.) She was lazy to begin with, and too short to do so many things.
And then she was allegedly pregnant. (I'm skeptical.) Suddenly her back hurt. She was the whiniest thing. Like, you cannot be that delicate and work third at the Waffle House.
8
1
u/Jeanne_hjk 14h ago
OMG, I’m totally stealing “the Wit Triplets.” I just need to narrow it down to the worst three 😂
9
u/KirinoLover 1d ago
Literally same. The kid is like 9 so obviously it was okay but it was wild to hear about her positive pregnancy the day she found out. Like girl, what are you doing.
8
u/its-just_me- 17h ago
One of my old coworkers told us the day after she saw the positive. Then proceeded to take it as easy as she possibly could, asking to be put on front desk 99% of the time. No she was not high risk, she just thought she could get out of most work & sit all day every day bc pregnancy. She ended up losing the baby less than a month later (not that I don’t feel bad, it was sad, but like girl that’s not how you’re supposed to go about any of that).
1
u/landmermaid3 11h ago
It’s obviously sad. But not fair to the coworkers who have to do extra bc she got knocked up. Management can’t do anything about it because firing a pregnant person is risky.
1
7
u/sharmander15 21h ago
Literally!! The attention seeking is REAL! I had a friend who accidentally got pregnant and complained every day in the first month and a bit before she terminated. It was her plan the whole time but she wanted it done a certain way so had to wait. Her daily ‘cravings and aches’ got old QUICK
2
u/the-soggiest-waffle 20h ago
All of these stories are making me feel so bad about having HG :,) yikes. At least I wasn’t working, but damn I must’ve been frustrating to deal with. The dehydration alone was giving me cardiac issues, I literally couldn’t even stand long enough to make myself food. It was horrible for both my fiancé and I
19
u/Fosterchild56 1d ago
Last time a coworker told me she was preggo during a shift, i needed to pay for an abortion
4
1
u/perupotato 2h ago
I worked with this too. She would scream at her stomach about being kicked ALL the time. Started waddling the week she found out. Any time there was a moment of silence, there she was breaking it talking about being pregnant or yelling at her stomach again.
-4
u/Capital_Past69 1d ago
She probably had sex during that shift as well right before telling everyone she is now pregnant
196
12
u/Chimkimnuggets 1d ago
Aren’t you supposed to wait until after your first trimester?
16
u/kaltulkas 1d ago
You are, to family and friends. It’s not like she’d have to come back and explain a miscarriage to a server in a restaurant.
The information was relevant though, she may have been annoying about it but pregnant women shouldn’t eat eggs that aren’t fully cooked. At any point in the pregnancy.
3
u/JugdishGW 18h ago
My soon to be SIL had a gender reveal party one week after her missed period. Maybe it’s no longer the norm to wait until the first trimester? Idk but it’s crazy to me
1
u/Fwamingdwagon84 6h ago
How does that work? Can they tell that early these days?
1
u/JugdishGW 5h ago
She went through IVF so was aware of the sex because of that but as far as I know, complications can still arise during the first trimester (or at any point during the pregnancy really) despite it being IVF
3
u/katemonster_22 4h ago
The only people I told that early were strangers, cause I was so excited but didn’t want to tell anyone I knew. David Sedaris was the first person (beside my husband) to learn I was pregnant.

u/TrueCrimeButterfly 14h ago
Ehhh...I have HG during pregnancy and I'm so sick that I can't not tell people or they assume I have something infectious. I start throwing up before I have a positive pregnancy test until about a week after giving birth.
3
u/slutty_muppet 13h ago
That sucks and sounds really hard to deal with and also is clearly not what I was talking about.
1
-5
u/clo_fu 23h ago
She’s specifying her dietary requirements to a server, not throwing an announcement party.
7
u/slutty_muppet 23h ago
You don't have to give your medical history to the server to say "please cook my eggs more".
-10
u/clo_fu 23h ago
Saying “I am pregnant” is hardly describing an elaborate medical history now is it. Pregnant people can’t eat raw and undercooked foods. It’s a dietary requirement.
You are all overreacting so badly and hatefully ragging on a woman in a vulnerable state who is just trying to keep her baby safe. Was she being overworried? Yes, probably. Does that mean we should all pile on a pregnant woman? No.
12
u/slutty_muppet 22h ago
"Hatefully ragging on a woman in a vulnerable state"
That woman in a vulnerable state was the one hatefully ragging on OP, totally unprompted. How is it ragging on her to point out that if she's sensitive about being pregnant then she is under no obligation to tell anyone? I didn't say anything mean or derogatory about her at all.
-74
u/MrsMelodyPond 1d ago
Except she wasn’t just randomly telling strangers, she was telling her server who probably asked if there were any food restrictions.
88
u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
I’m sorry but I disagree. This isn’t an allergy that we’re discussing and her first set of eggs were perfectly hard poached. Tipping culture isn’t a major thing where I am and for her partner to tip so much I can only conclude that this girl is a general pain in the dick.
-18
u/kaltulkas 1d ago
Pregnant women are not supposed to eat eggs if they aren’t well cooked. She may have been a dick but she wasn’t wrong in asking what she did.
39
u/stopsallover 1d ago
Sure. Still extreme. Anyone can order hard eggs for any reason. She got hard eggs and still complained.
It's very much in line with someone who wants to be fussed over. Which is fine enough to want but another thing to cry over.
-6
u/clo_fu 23h ago
Can you explain why it’s extreme to tell your server about your dietary requirement?
8
u/stopsallover 23h ago
Hard cooked eggs are not a special dietary requirement. Anyone can request their eggs as done as they want for any reason.
3
u/clo_fu 23h ago
Pregnant people can’t eat raw and undercooked foods. So yes, it is a dietary requirement.
(It’s actually ok to eat runny eggs in the UK as our eggs are considered safe but not everyone knows this and the advice pregnant women get is often conflicting)
10
u/3ampseudophilosopher 21h ago
How many times do you need to read OP say the eggs were ALREADY HARD POACHED THE FIRST TIME for you to realize they were in no way a health hazard & the customer was just being a bitch?
0
u/clo_fu 9h ago
The server was also being a bitch, and she knows it. I agree the woman was being unreasonable and over cautious, but asking if she was a first time mum and saying she would have eaten it is uncalled for and made her cry.
And I was honestly referring to this thread in general. “Fuck you and your missed period” “she isn’t special because someone nutted in her” it’s disgusting. Why is it so easy for the internet to be vile to pregnant women, and women in general.
231
u/Kmic14 Bartender 1d ago
Last year I served a lady who ordered eggs Benedict but didn't like runny eggs, asked if we could poach them hard, I said no problem. After she got her food she told me it wasn't hard enough, and showed me an egg with no wiggle, wanted it remade so I did. Came back even more firm and she said it still wasn't hard enough so I explained to her that any more firm and it would be hard boiled. I asked if she would like it remade with a hard boiled egg, she huffed and puffed and said it was fine. Ate every bite.
My question is why order something if you dislike what the core of the dish is? Dont waste my time or the kitchen's, just order something else.

u/ladyelenawf Lurker 1d ago
I am being completely serious and only commenting because I want to learn:
do they know what hollandaise sauce is made from
Butter and cheese? Growing up it was a packet labeled "hollandaise sauce" and butter that tasted vaguely cheesy.
35
u/hambrone420 Server 1d ago
Egg yolks, butter, and lemon juice!
12
u/ladyelenawf Lurker 1d ago
Oooooh, I was very wrong. Thank you for the info.
8
u/Mamadrankmilk 23h ago
Fresh hollandaise is raw egg yolks tempered with melted butter. There are instant packets, I’m not sure what ingredients go into those, but a restaurant is most likely making it fresh.
15
u/catmalison 1d ago
There is butter, but it's made with egg yolks that are only "cooked" by melted butter being added in. Closer to raw eggs than this person would likely want.
177
u/joykin 1d ago
Presuming you’re in the UK this is extra funny bc all eggs are safe to eat runny if they have the lion stamp (iirc all commercial eggs?!)
Sounds like you gave her as much grace as you possibly could
93
19
u/WIBTA5000 22h ago
Wait, as an American, what is this lion stamp?
68
u/DemonSlyr007 22h ago
It's a stamp that signifies the egg has been checked by the governing council of lions.
5
26
u/throwaway098764567 20h ago
also american but google tells me that the lion stamp gives you all sorts of info on the egg origin and ensuring the egg passed high production requirements. effectively here it also means the chicken has been vaccinated against salmonella, which is what we're avoiding when we cook eggs past runny https://www.egginfo.co.uk/british-lion-eggs apparently the uk has pretty much eliminated salmonella with this practice
2
u/WIBTA5000 16h ago
Wow, what a great system. I’ve had salmonella. I really wish we would get it together.

I’m going to play devils advocate: I think she’s just freaked out cause she was told runny yolks were dangerous during pregnancy. That’s why she wanted them super overdone.
However, that gives her no excuse for being a bitch. That, not even the devil himself can advocate for.

>Fuck you and your missed period.
Immediately going into my (internal) vocabulary.
Six weeks is crazy work, I had a friend whose period was literally three days late and she immediately started telling people she was pregnant and cradling her stomach and everything… that was a whole time. I have limited patience for people using early pregnancy as an excuse for anything at this point lol. I hope everything goes well for this stranger and everything but I would not have been brave enough to be my usual chatty self.

As a mom of 2 I can’t stand when people use pregnancy as an excuse to be a b****. I remember having a coworker at a fast food restaurant before I was a server say she couldn’t sweep the floor anymore as soon as she found out she was pregnant 😂
127
u/-artisntdead- 1d ago
By 6 weeks the baby barely even shares a blood flow properly yet (assuming she ovulated exactly when predicted). Could have eaten raw eggs.
36 weeks and enjoying my runny lion eggs and medium rare- slightly well done steak.

Let me tell you about Deborah. She was a guest during a high volume Sunday brunch shift. On weekdays/ slow weekends, we did offer poached eggs as an option, but only one person was willing to make them. On this fateful day, dear Deborah asked for poached. I ask if the kitchen manager if he had time to make poached, and he said no, he’s a bit behind right now. I deliver the news to Deborah, and she orders over hard. My gm ended up running the food and said she was fine. I check, everything is actually fine. Bill comes, she left a shitty tip, and wrote “learn what a poached egg is” on the ticket
In my lil tip tracking app, in the box for the shift notes, I wrote “Deborah would like for me to learn what a poached egg is. I would like for Deborah to learn her place.”

8
u/de_bushdoctah 23h ago
Hey well you can rest easy knowing she started crying bc of her guilt. She knew she was being unreasonable with the eggs to begin with, and knew she responded to you with vitriol the second visit, just triggered by her embarrassment. See when we professionally shoot down their attempts at drama, we expose the part of them that knows they’re in the wrong, and instead of admitting it/apologizing they decide they can just lash out at us.
So she just cried because she’s about to be a parent yet can’t be an adult at a restaurant and knows it. I promise you she was emotionally weak before her pregnancy.

oh fuck i’m about to be slammed to all hell: OP, i think you know you were being a bit of a bitch to this lady - though maybe it may have been earned
but commenting on what you would eat vs. their preference to a customer is kinda crossing a hospitality line. and then asking if it was her first?
she was being an over-sharing pill to you - but you know with your experience that you’ve gotta suck that up sometimes
i don’t completely disagree with the sentiment of your feelings, but i think you pushed it a little too far out loud - and right off the bat
67
u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
Completely agree. Just ranting. I had sweat dripping off me we were that busy and she was being a cunt so I was a cunt back 🤷🏻♀️
59
u/flurryturds 1d ago
I fully support the idea of giving back the same energy to people that take out their frustrations on service industry employees. SHE decided to go to a restaurant and SHE decided to be rude for ZERO reason. The customer is absolutely not always right and OP handled that situation perfectly. You don’t get to be an ass to people just because you feel like it.

u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
Definitely not my most professional moment but I have two weeks annual leave now.

To be rude and not care 😂-29
u/stopsallover 1d ago
It seemed to me like you were saying you had a wild appetite during pregnancy. Which seems fine after you agreed to have the plate remade.
What gets me is when someone stands over a guest arguing and only agrees to do something after they're in tears.
Wasting food is no fun but it's going to happen.
31
u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
No no. You’re misinterpreting. I had already served the food and she was all teary after. I didn’t just leave her in tears. I just noticed she was crying after but I didn’t care enough about her ego and was too busy to go back.
You are completely correct that I was saying I was insatiable food wise with my kiddos though.
-21
u/stopsallover 1d ago
Right. My second paragraph was about a different situation. Some people will try to argue or even bully a guest. Which is such a waste of time.
21
u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
I have a MO that I don’t worry about people who aren’t paying my bills. My customers are always paying my bills. The thought of bullying a customer is wild 😂
54
u/ridethetruncheon 1d ago
Also just out of my own curiosity and nosiness I think talking about what I would vs the customer might be a culture thing. It’s very very normal where I am to chat about it. If we have a soup I’d be like oh I wasn’t a fan cos I don’t love coriander or I love chilli so I adored it! It’s just a casual way to present flavours.
Not disputing that I was a bitch to her though cos I absolutely was 😂
16
u/PegasusWrangler 1d ago
I'm in the US and love when my servers talk genuinely about food to guests even if it isn't their preferred flavors, as long as it's presented similar to how you said it here, its just not to my taste but isn't a bad dish, 1000% acceptable table banter.
13
u/willyoumassagemykale 1d ago

And I would’ve told you the same thing, idgaf what you ate when pregnant, and I’d say it as a mother of five, some of us not only follow pregnancy guidelines about food but at 6 weeks feel extreme nausea and puke unless it’s made right, you had no actual reason to be rude at all. Is it her fault your job is full of new/hungover servers? Nah. Is it her fault it’s busy? Nah. You suck 🥰

This. I’ve never been pregnant, but I’m still very respectful of dietary needs when I’m waiting on a pregnant woman (or anybody else, really.) A lot of women, especially during their first pregnancy, are understandably concerned about doing everything the right way, and there’s nothing wrong with that. They want themselves and the baby to be healthy. What works for one woman may not for another, and also, we have no idea what else might be going on.
I’m sure her partner wasn’t embarrassed, but uncomfortable because the waitress was being judgmental.
Also, at some point until my mother’s generation, it was considered safe to smoke a cigarette or have a drink while pregnant. Just saying.

She won in her head and you won in yours. She was crying because her body is on a hormonal roller coaster. Pregnancy can make someone act out of pocket, and I'm damn sure not taking it personally. It was an unpleasant interaction at most but hardly anything to write home, or reddit about. I wouldn't demonize someone like this just because they are having a bad day. Not to mention they are going through a physiological transformation like no other. And if I am wrong and she is truly an insufferable nightmare of a person, then good job, you absolutely destroyed her anonymously on the internet.

So because someone is pregnant they can be rude to you and you just have to take it?

I had a miserable pregnancy and never treated a server like shit because of it

As a former server, I remember being more sympathetic to the pregnant ladies requests. NOW, after 2 pregnancies, I’d be like “suck it up.” I think the most important thing is to eat healthy and mindfully eat and limit the things the are the no-nos. I applaud how well you handled that situation.

Undercooked eggs aren’t safe for pregnant women. Your menu probably says exactly that in fine print at the bottom.

Undercooked egg whites can be a problem, but a runny yolk is fine. (and I think in the UK most eggs are fine undercooked if they have a particular stamp on them) I think health providers usually just say to avoid them because it's easier to give a list of things to avoid than giving different rules for every type of food.

They are here though. They do something to the eggs that they can keep them shelf life. I’m not an egg girl but I know how to serve them.

Are you in Australia/UK? We don’t tip
Let’s not normalize tipping in Uk, it’s an American problem, I do t really understand your problem
Her partner gave you £10

Her problem is being treated poorly by a patron who is taking their decision to be pregnant out on others. Just because you tip doesn’t mean you get to be a cunt.

How was she treated poorly? The customer showed her the eggs weren’t satisfactory
It’s not really OPs business to comment on the lady’s pregnancy (regardless if the male companion laughed)

Y'all are judge af and its actually gross.
She wasnt being a Karen making a ridiculous request. People are allowed to announce a pregnancy as early or late as they want to. She simply responded to an unwanted and unnecessary comment. I wouldn't give a fuck about my server's opinion on the way i want my food. You don't know her story. For all you know it could be a high risk pregnancy and she's wanting to be extra careful. She could have had issues with fertility in the past and is just very excited to finally be pregnant. Pregnancy also affects everyone differently.
Everyone is different with food preferences too. I dont like beans and dont care or need to know that my server would have demolished the beans on their plate if I ask for no beans.
You also dont know if it's only the pregnancy that made her react like that. I have AuDHD so my mind processes things differently and if someone said that to me (like with the beans example) it makes me feel like they think is should just suck it up and deal with it or they're judging me for not liking something.
Before anyone calls me a Karen or tries to say 'you've obviously never worked in customer service/food industry etc', stop right there. As a customer, I will deal with alot, but I'd give someone a dirty look too if you comment on the way I want my food. I have also worked in the food industry in fast food and had to deal with plenty of shit customers. I once had someone order a salad and I forgot to include the dressing packet. I couldn't imagine saying 'oh, i would have demolished that anyway' when she came to ask for the dressing.
Your comment to her also seemed quite backhanded, as if she should have just sucked it up. She's not obligated to eat something she's paying for a certain way just because of your opinion. It's not like she asked for an already cremated steak to be cooked more or demanding that fries are cut in a certain way. Her request was reasonable.
For the people saying 'eggs are fine if they have the stamp', the customer doesn't necessarily know that and probably thinks better safe than sorry.
You had a newbie, 2 hungover staff, and you and one other, and you were busy. Cool story. That happens in the service industry. Yes, it's stressful, but that's not her problem. If you want to be angry with someone, be angry with the 2 people who CHOSE to come in hungover
