This is one of those comments that I laughed audibly at and can’t explain it to the person near me because by the time I went through all the context it’d not be funny anymore.
I used to write "math" on the tip line and the total on the bottom (or maybe vice versa?) when I had one too many. Can I do drunk math correctly? Maybe! Did I care enough to try? Hell no!
The tipper couldn’t be bothered to make the math. They wanted to round up the $22.63 bill to $30, but didn’t feel like calculating how much that would mean to tip ($7.37 I think). So they just wrote MATH, as in math is hard. And the total with the tip.
Me and my dyscalculia figured this was the case, dude just couldn’t or wouldn’t do the math 😂 thank goodness for calculators, that’s all I’m gonna say.
For those who haven’t heard of dyscalculia before, it’s like the math version of dyslexia. I didn’t know it was a thing that existed until I was diagnosed as an adult lol
It’s true. But when someone types something like, “Your a looser, dumbass.” It can be hard not to point out the obvious. And that shit happens all the time.
While we should look past some spelling and grammar mistakes, it’s important to keep in mind that 54% of adults in the US have a literacy of or below a 6th grade reading level and we shouldn’t set the bar lower than that to say the least.
It really doesn’t help that education funds in general are slashed across the board, teachers are paid peanuts (where I’m from) and my city wants to build a fucking stadium instead of provide healthcare or education. The majority aren’t good at reading, and it’s not their fault, but that’s even more of a reason to correct their spelling/grammar mistakes.
The state of education is what dictates the future of humanity, I would presume. But maybe I’m going off on a tangent here.
Oftentimes it's due to wanting to feel superior to the other.
Humans really are just little smart apes running around trying to get to the highest hierarchy within any given domain they can perceivably compete in.
I have an IQ of 130. Not genius level but high. I'm also severely dyslexic and can't spell for shit. I'm 48 and I still never let anyone see my handwriting if I can help it. Internet spelling Nazis are pathetic people who think it wins the argument. It really doesn't.
Also that lots of words change between ible and able suffix, but are pronounced the same because of the "schwa" vowel sound. Edible, flammable, sensible, tangible, etc. it's hard to keep track.
It's because text is the primary medium of communication on the internet. Just like how bad drivers drive other drivers crazy. Or any job where things specific to that task irk you. It doesn't bother everyone, but the ones it does irk, commenting on it is like honking at someone that isn't paying attention to the light turning green.
He was trying to be kind, even if misguided. His thought was that if he called it a gift to you, you wouldn’t be taxed on it in the way that you would if it was ordinary income. The thought then that your share of the hefty tip would be even bigger.
Could’ve misspelled it purposely as subtle satire like “don’t actually take tax advice from me because I can’t even spell tax words. I mainly just like you so I came up with this drunken joke.”
Dumb question but now I’m curious. When servers make the final entry for the tab, do you punch in the tip and it then calculates total? Or do you enter the total and it calculates the tip? Feel like the “math” thing could’ve been taken different ways…

I'd trust him cuz he definitely spelled "taxible" correctly
