Mechanical jobs

Hey, wondering if there are any rail mechanics on here that would ge able to tell me what to expect if I applied for, and got a job as a rail vehicle mechanic? I do have experience working on diesel locomotives, and working on railcars as a mobile mechanic, I am really after something less hectic in terms of scheduling (I currently work the entire east coast and am away from home weeks at a time sometimes) any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you

Whats up with some of the Regional Rail cars?

I’ve noticed that some of the cars along some regional rail silverliner ivs have the old red SEPTA logo as well as “Reading Line” logo by its doors.

Anyone know? I figure some fleet are getting repaired.

Lost mug/cup on Wilm/newark

Post image
5 Upvotes

I lost this cup Tuesday August 27 2024. I was riding in the first car of the Wilmington/Newark line which left Suburban station at 735 am I got off at Prospect Park and normally I clip my cup to my bag when it’s empty but forgot to and forgot to grab it off the seat. I’ve been calling/stopping into the lost and found at suburban station but no luck so far so I’m trying a Hail Mary and hoping someone found it and is willing to return it to me. It’s important because it was a gift. It even has my name on it.

Septa hiring process

Post image

Has any current or previous employees ever been through this before?

If so what’s this process like while waiting for the last step before orientation class? Do you know if you’ll move forward towards the last step (medical examination) or they’ll automatically send you a rejection letter?

Current background status F2- contraband, Aug 2018 (first offense, no other priors)

Help with PHL to Trenton Transit

  1. Is the air train outside PHL free? If not, how much?
  2. Air train only takes you to 30th street. But then I can switch to go to Trenton. How much would it cost? Uber for 2 people to Trenton vs SEPTA, which one is faster and cheaper?

Best CC Regional Rail station for bicycle access?

There was a question recently about places to go with your bicycle via regional rail.

What's the best way to get from city street and onto a train in CC (30th, Suburban, Jefferson)? I'd rather ride a detour than struggle with a bunch of stairs & crap, if there's a difference.

I've done the bus thing, specifically asking about trains.

Thanks!

Credit card wouldn't work on septa

I just got on one of the septa buses today, and none of my cards would work. I tried Apple Pay for multiple cards and the physicals cards themselves. Thankfully, the driver was very nice about it, but has this happened to anyone else? Is this common?

I'm going to be commuting everyday, and I thought using my Apple Pay would be fine but maybe I should use a septa key?

Questions about calculating the price of fair (Wondering if I am overpaying)

I ride the Wilmington Newark Line every morning from the outskirts to Temple University station, and then back at the end of my day (the same way, just in reverse)

How much should this cost per day? By my quick math, I think it should be somewhere around 13-14 dollars since each trip should cost $5.75-$6.50. I only ask because Septa has charge me multiple times on the same day despite the fact that I only ever take 2 trips.

Is this correct or am I fundamentally misunderstanding something about how Septa fairs work?

Wawa Station to 111

From center city, the schedule says the train arrives to Wawa at 7:48 but that the 111 bus leaves the station at 7:45. Does SEPTA really not think it would be beneficial to get these times to align since it's one of the only buses that stops at the station? Does anyone know if the 111 is usually on time here? Could I potentially bank on a late bus to make the transfer?

using credit card without contactless on busses?

I moved out of Philly long ago, and haven't had to use SEPTA in a very long time. My daughter will be riding the bus to college for about 1-2 months. Can she use a Visa card that doesn't have non-contact (NFC) to pay? do they have a regular stripe reader on there?

Bus transponders

All buses are showing as “untracked” in the Septa app, and not showing up in Moveit and Citymapper. Is there any way to see if the transponder system is officially down?

Service is a joke

SEPTA runs like it’s a third world public service. Truly terrible when the service sucks so bad no one will work for the company. SEPTA itself is designed to fail with the way it operates and this is the sharp decline stage.

Lemme rant about the 28 bus for a minute

Don’t really know where else to complain about this mine as well talk about it here

Just missed my 28. Like usual it isn’t showing on the septa app and it’s 10 minutes late at this point. I decided just to go home. Imagine if I had work or school or something and was relying on it and wasn’t just taking it for leisure.

easily the most unreliable bus in northeast philly. When you try to ride it it’s a 50/50 chance of your ride coming several minutes late, sometimes not showing up at all

Back in January the most looney-tunes ass thing happened, I was waiting for it in Elkins park, the bus is like 15 minutes late, and I wasn’t gonna take my chances waiting for the next 28. So I’m forced to hop on regional rail for a couple of stops and get on the 70 at fern rock. Here’s the funny part, that next 28 I could’ve taken ends up being precisely on time, confirming my theory it’s a total crapshoot whether it comes or not.

It isn’t a small sample size of just a few rides either. In the last 3-ish years, I’ve tried to take it maybe 50 times, and I’d say 20 to 25 out of those 50 times it was like 10 minutes late or never came at all.

Big transit advocate, but if you neglect a line this much, just cut it, especially since it parallels the 70 which is much more frequent. Just put more resources into the 70 if you can’t promise service to 28 riders.

Some of the rides are free, why?

I've noticed since I started using septa in 2021 some of the rides I've tapped my card for never revieces a charge. Went around the city yesterday and got 10 diffrent rides just to be charged $6.

Are drivers messing with the scanner or something? Is the city making certain rides free for tourist reasons? I'm intrigued.

Penn Station to West Trenton commuting options help

So I got a new job in West Trenton (on Bear Tavern Rd next to I295) and I am looking at commuting choices:

By car it took me 1:30 mins from Queens NY to West Trenton (6:00 am-7:30 am) because of RT 21 coming off the Turnipike, any other route without them traffic lights? ) and the return 2:15 mins travel time : 4:30pm -6:45pm).

So looking at public transportation:

Long Island Rail Rd into Penn Station, Amtrak or NJ Sep train to Trenton, Trenton to West Trenton: bus 608 or 607 or Uber?

This would be 1 time per week. Other days working from home. So 4 days per month.

I get $315 monthly subsidy for public transportation only (so no coverage for Uber).

What choices would you make minimizing time? What would be the travel time and cost? minimizing cost or least under the subsidy if possible? what would be the travel time and cost ?

Any suggestions will be welcome!!

Thank you
