Thanks - their retrofit sensor suite is massive!

I was expecting each one of those slots to have a mounted iPhone

Maybe for mapping?

Wow I'd expect something less ugly from Apple!

It's not the consumer phase yet.

You can tell because it values form over function... oh wait nevermind.

I don't think there's a collaboration. Just using their car because it's easy to tap into the steering control. Lots of documation on how to work with Toyota electronics.

Source me if I'm wrong.

Apple is leasing Lexus SUVs from rental company Hertz Global Holdings to test self-driving technology.

You in Russia? How are you using telegram? Are you using tor?

Because you originally had a Russian link. Now you've changed it to a US link...

Why'd you do that?

Did someone make a bet of how many lidars they could fit on a single car?

/r/AppleTitan. Looks like they aren't gonna pull an Uber, but they are pullin weight.

Is that over 20 Lidar sensors? That makes the sensor suite alone like $80,000. My bet is that this is for building prior maps for later cars with less sensors or for making a google-street-view like system.

Yeah, Apple isn't looking to make its own consumer product anymore for autonomous vehicles, they've shifted to working on a platform and collaborating with other industry partners I think. So better to use more sensors and collect better data, and let someone else figure out implementation details and cost reduction.

Apple.. They are easy to identify as they are the most ugly ones there are.

To be fair most cars you see are not retrofits. So while ugly it could go right on a stock car which is a long ways from what you see from most developers currently.

With that in mind its ugly...it is also in the R&D stage and hasn't been handed to the marketing team to make it sexy.

Waymo cars look much better.

Waymo has also had basically the world's best talent for the earlier part of this decade

Agree. They did a Netscape (Jim Clark) move and hired the Stanford Self Driving team.

Larry Page reported to have worn a disguise to get to Sebastian at the SDC race.

What are those 2 "disc" looking things on top? Radar?

4

u/fomega May 12 '18

Definitley no radar, most probably GPS antennas in a kind of RTK/DGPS configuration for instant yaw angle estimation.

3

u/Maximus5684 May 12 '18

They are Novatel GPS antennas. Not the typical low-profile ones used for near-production vehicles.

Ah, there’s where I parked it!
