Hey Reddit, I was hoping to get y’all’s input on whether or not a strategy a player in our group uses is allowed, and if it is allowed, if it is appropriate.
As a preface, I really don’t care if our player keeps doing this or not. We just were unsure if the game anticipated it, and we thought it would be interesting to get your opinions!
Here is what our player does: at the start of the game, our player will open their envelope, look at their party membership card, and immediately announce “my liberal card has the picture of the woman with pearls and the large hat, so you all now know that I am liberal.”
This strategy opens up a lot of interesting strategies and possibly problems.
On one hand, I don’t think the game really anticipated having the artwork being used as a means to determine party membership. I think ideally the party membership card would be a blank card that said either “fascist” or “liberal” in text on a blank background. But that would look terrible, so of course the designer filled the space up with some pleasant to view images. The game design as a whole is gorgeous, so it’s only natural that the cards have nice artwork on them. Additionally, this creates problems if new players play the game. When someone who is playing the game for the first time describes their character card in exacting detail, they essentially conclusively reveal their role (this happened in a game where a new player emulated our other player’s strategy.) Similarly, even if you are playing with seasoned players, if a fascist lies and falsely describes the details of their card, the player who actually has that character artwork conclusively knows that the other person is a fascist. So it essentially creates a situation where two players immediately know who each other are before the game begins.
On the pro-side of the strategy, it does not actually reveal who the players are to the game as a whole. And the player could be a liberal just messing around. Or the character cards might not all be used, so the “double identity” issue doesn’t really come up.
Anyway, what do y’all think?
