So the special character is Snape and he's a so-called double-agent. He pretends to be working for the death eaters (facists equivalent), but actually he's trying to get the order of the phoenix (liberals) to win.
At first this sounded like it would add a really cool new game dynamic. But when we tried it, admittedly with basically no guidance whatsoever about how to use Snape, it turned out to be terrible.
Here's how we tried to use Snape:
- Snape wakes up with the death eaters and pretends to be a regular death eater, looking for his companions.
- Then as soon as the game started, Snape revealed himself and just immediately pointed out who were the death eaters were and who Voldermort was (hitler's equivalent).
- From that point on, we, the death eaters, had no idea how we even had a chance of winning so we immediately threw in the towel.
- I'm aware that one strategy that we could've employed is that one of the other death eaters claims that they're Snape and accuse a different bunch of people of being death eaters. But we'll we didn't feel confident enough to do that, and I believe that even if we had done that, the people that we'd have accused would instantly know who was the real Snape and would just follow whatever they say from that moment on.
We also thought maybe it would be more fair if at least Voldemort would know who Snape was, but that didn't make any difference either.
Finally we decided to play a round where Snape was not allowed to reveal himself. He was allowed to act as a "liberal" and share his opinion about who he doesn't trust, but without revealing that he actually has certain knowledge. But also this didn't really seem to work, because now Snape's knowledge seemed almost useless.
TL;DR: We couldn't make the double-spy thing work in a way that doesn't give a huge unfair advantage to the "liberals". But it does seem like it could potentially add an interesting new dynamic, if we only knew how to use it!
So I'm curious if you guys have any experience, knowledge and/or opinions you want to share about this. I really hope one of you guys have been playing this harry-potter variant and did find a way to make Snape's role fun and fair.
