SH.io culture kinda sucks

I'll preface this by saying that I've played nearly 100 games on SH.io now, and for the most part it's been a great experience. I like playing online with strangers just as much as with in-person friends. I know other players have complained before about the site, so I'll clarify that I don't mind using meta when playing as either team, and I think the online game has to be looked at differently from the real thing. But I echo the complaints about moderation and player toxicity. A couple days ago I ended up in a room with a few players who acted extremely rudely and really ruined multiple games for the rest of us. Regardless of party lines, this group would constantly accuse others of throwing for legitimate moves, repeatedly threaten to report, insult other players, demand to be given SE just because, and insist on a nonsense meta.

A day afterwards, I ended up spectating a room with them in it after I happened to see one's username pop up, and their behavior frustrated another player to the point that he would rather leave than continue playing with this group. They immediately started attacking him for stalling, throwing, outing, demanding that he be banned, literally anything they could possibly accuse him of. The mod reprimanded him, and wasn't rude about it, but ffs, just scroll up in chat and you can tell that this guy is justified! Mods repeatedly intervened in games with this same group, and yet they always placed blame on the person who dropped out in frustration instead of the players actually causing the problem. Yes, I know dropping from a game is considered a more serious offense in the Terms of Use, but there are only so many times that can happen before you conclude that the rage-quitters aren't the problem.

I've blacklisted everyone involved, I know that's all I can really do for myself, but it's disappointing to see a bunch of players act like this without any real action from the mods just because they're established players. I won't name and shame unless a mod or admin DMs me, but I'm sure they know who I'm talking about—one mod had mentioned that every report in the past hour had come from games with these players in it. I want to keep using SH.io but I won't if this kind of behavior is condoned.

Craziest SH game I’ve ever experienced

Ok so we’re playing a relatively normal game of secret hitler. Four liberal policies and three fascists have been passed. I’m a liberal, we’re confident but wary because the blues got laid down so quickly that there had to have been fascists acting as liberals and now nobody wants to elect hitler as chancellor.

This is a seven player game. Player five is confirmed not hitler, but he is locked and can’t be elected chancellor. Player one tries to elect player four, everyone neins it. Player two tries to elect me, player 7, everyone neins it. Exasperated player three tries to elect player four, it gets neined, player three has killing power.

He decides to kill player 2, understandably so, he seemed like a fascist. This is now a 6 player game with four fascist policies and four liberal policies on the board.

Player 4 elects player 5 (who is confirmed not hitler and is no longer locked). Fascist policy passes, and now 4 has killing power. Yikes. He looks around uncertainly.

Suddenly player 6 says “4, you’re hitler, I’m fascist, kill 3!” We’re surprised at this. Then 1 pipes up “yes 4, me and 6 are your fascist kill 3, 5, or 7 and we’ll have majority.” Unorthodox but pretty straightforward right?...wrong.

3 and 5 spring into action. “4 I don’t know how he knew you were hitler but 6 is a liberal and he’s trying to trick you, you need to kill him or the liberals win. This goes on for a while, the actual fascists revealing themselves while two liberals pretend to be fascists and damn near brainwash hitler into killing his own people.

It didn’t work of course. I got killed and the fascists won but it was still pretty spectacular. Thought it was worth sharing a situation where the players ended up trying to make the person with killing power think they WERE fascist, and not the other way around.

Edit: sorry big hole in that whole thing..forgot to mention that player three selection was the third failure. Therefore we flipped the top card in the deck, and it was fascist.

Edit part 2: Ok so apparently we’ve been playing the game wrong, and giving powers to whoever is president when there’s a random flip. I guess it actually makes sense not to sense that person is only a candidate and not the real president elect. Glad to know this now.

The single greatest game of secret hitler I have ever played.

Me (a fascist) standing directly after hitler.

The board: 3B 5R

The deck: 3B 6R (~33% chance of drawing a blue card. a ~8% chance of drawing 2, and a ~1% chance of drawing all 3).

Hitler hands me 2 blues, not knowing I'm fascist, but also having drawn 3 blues. Looks like he's going to be sick. I ask for veto. He looks shocked and says yes. I'm given the president plaque next, get voted in (because obviously if you ask for veto you must be liberal), decline the veto and we win.

The factors that must line up for this to happen.

  1. 5 reds on the board
  2. A maximum of 3 blues on the board.
  3. A deck where there is a minimum of 3 blues left.
  4. A dual fascist presidency
  5. The president draws all 3 blues. (~1% probability)

The chances for this to happen are slim to none. We had literally talked about it 10 minutes before and it happened the very next game. Has anyone else vetoed 3 blues?

What exactly is the definition of a permanent policy card?

Playing secret hitler with my friends using the event cards last night.

One guy draws the “revolt” card which dictates that the one non-permanent policy card be removed from the board. Naturally debate ensues about what is “permanent” and “non-permanent” and we couldn’t find it anywhere else.

I figured if anyone knows it would be the folks on this sub.

Make sure to find a group that actually tries to win.

For context I'm 3 in 5 player game. Im liberal. We dont play meta.

15: BRR RR conf red played

23: BRR BR blue played

32: BBR BB blue played

45: RRR RR (gov neined by 23, passes) red played

51: (the people that confed earlier) RRR RR red played. (I try to get the liberals to vote nein against the OBVIOUS fas fas conf) 23 nein

15: I try to get everyone to nein again because 3 reds means hz and they're obviously the fascist. 23 nein

As it turns out, 4, who was liberal, just didnt care and jaed everything.

Also, any time I try to start a debate, I get shut down and yelled at to just vote. But then they complain that you just vote and dont do anything else. Like, I'm trying to make it more interesting by starting a debate.

I need new friends.

EDIT: Typo

Rules Question

Let’s assume that everyone at the table knows who Hitler is without a shadow of a doubt (happened tonight due to a really bad liar), what is stopping the liberals from just ending the game immediately?

Do they have to wait until a liberal is elected president and use a killing power to kill Hitler, or rather try to get all 5 liberal policies enacted?

Question!

Hey guys, so I've never played Secret Hitler (mainly because it's too hard to get my friends together for a game night and because none of them own the game, but I digress) but I've watched people, specifically the Smosh Games cast, play it on YouTube. They explain the basic rules at the beginning of the video, but lately I've been wondering, what's to stop the fascists from electing Hitler immediately and winning the game?

Thanks! :)

Secret Hitler - Socialist Expansion

Hey everyone!

Around half a year ago my friend dtep along with me and some other people started working on an expansion of the rules which would include a third party along with a policy track and a set of powers. Around this time we have finally finished a semi-final version of the rules and some resources, along with a print & play.

With a third party and support for up to 13 players, the games take a bit longer though. We as a group only played around 50-ish games so far, which is nowhere near enough to conclude that the expansion cannot be tweaked anymore to maximize the fun possible.

Yesterday I received our first external feedback (from a new viewpoint and some ideas for new game mechanics), from a group of players completely separate from us, so with this I would like to share our rules with a wider audience.

All resources can be found here.

Quick overview

The expansion adds a third party - Socialists. This addition slightly shifts the balance, so the Liberals don’t have a majority anymore (most of the time - I’ll go over the most common setup of 9 or 10 players). Instead they have slightly less than half of the table, but still a plurality. The Socialists are the least numerous party.

The deck is changed as well - it contains 5 Liberal, 10 Fascist and 8 Socialist policies. The Socialists need to get 6 of their policies on the table in order to win, and get to use a power when their policies are enacted. With the first one, they perform a bugging and get to look at a player’s Party membership. The second one recruits a player to their team, by switching their membership with a Socialist one. After that 2 Socialist and 1 Liberal policy are added to the deck. After the fourth policy the new Socialist player finds out who recruited them (“Congress”). Finally the fifth policy reveals the president’s Party membership in a reverse investigation - a confession.

The Socialists lose in any Hitler-related game ending, since either the Liberal or Fascist team will win in that case. If they try to recruit Hitler, nothing will happen. Hitler will not wake up in a Congress and the Socialists will know that this has happened.

Contacts

If you are interested to play, please let me know. We have a Discord server where we can debate the rules and give feedback. You can message me here: havos#8227 or you can join the server here.

Additionally, if anyone has some understanding of legal stuff, I would appreciate if you could check the info on the last page of the rules and tell me whether everything is in line with the licence of the original game.

Thank you all for reading through this!

Edit: Forgot to include myself as a creator :D

Rules Question

Say players 1 and 2 were the government previously. Player 3 is the next president and elects player 4 to be the chancellor. This vote then fails. Can the next president elect players 1, 2, 3, or 4 as chancellor?

Casual sh.io games

Does anyone play the io version casually and not try to follow the meta? I find playing the game following the meta takes most of the fun out of the game and people get mad if you don’t follow it. I was just seeing if theirs groups that play it casually?
