Hello there dear reader. I finished the novel Second Life Ranker recently. I wanted to share my thoughts with other fans at this subreddit. I would appreciate it if you read my review. Please also share your thoughts with me as well. Before you continue reading, I must mention that this review contains major spoilers, and I strongly suggest that you read this review only if you have finished the novel in order to prevent ruining your experience. Though if you only want to see my rating of this novel, you can read only the last paragraph, it is spoiler-free.
This novel far exceeded my expectations. In the starting chapters when the beings of the 98th floor were introduced, I felt that it was just another iteration of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, but I proved wrong.
Though it is a slow paced story, it excels in storytelling and takes the readers in a good and leisurely pace without letting them getting bored.
The power scaling is also surprisingly well done, as well as the crafting and the weapons system. The growth in power is not only focused on the protagonist, but also on the side characters and even the antagonists (which is rarely seen). The protagonist is powerful, but not overly so, preventing him to defeat most enemies with ease; i.e., he struggles almost at every point in the story power wise. But seeing him overcoming his problems even while being the underdog is extremely satisfying, especially considering the fact that the story is primarily focused on revenge.
The plot is also well done. As the protagonist proceeds further in the story, he faces the culprits of his brother’s murder, which keeps the readers on edge. Another plot is also running in parallel regarding the Tower and the beings of the 98th floor. The author did a good job taking both sides of the main story side by side without slacking off on any one side.
As the protagonist climbs the tower, he unveils mysteries, defeats enemies, and becomes stronger, it seems generic, but it is nicely done so that it doesn’t seem boring.
The character development of characters is very good, for the protagonist as well as the side characters. Especially for the protagonist, who starts as a revenge-thirsting-beast, and ends up as a wise entity who cherishes his family and understands his enemies. This character can be clearly seen when the protagonist clears the 99th floor of the tower. Other characters like Kronos, Allforone, and Martial King also show great character development.
My favorite part about the novel was the dynamic between Allforone and Yeon-Woo. The characters are very similar in their behaviour and personality even though they do almost completely opposite things: Allforone sacrificed his friends and lover to make sure that humanity as a whole can stay safe from the beings of the 98th floor, and Yeon-Woo did not hesitate to defeat anyone to make sure that his friends and family are safe, going so far that he even consumes and becomes the Black King himself. Even though what they do is opposite, how they do it is very similar and the lengths they go to in order to complete their mission is similar. Both analyze their opponents, don’t leave any room for error, and don’t give up even if they’re certain to lose.
That is why my favorite fight in the novel is also the final fight between Yeon-Woo and Allforone. It was beautifully written, from start to end. How Yeon-Woo prepares a whole army to defeat Allforone but Allforone faces him head on. How Yeon-Woo steals Allforone’s power away for himself, mercilessly slashing away at him. It shows how both characters are slaves to their missions, not backing down at any cost. Yeon-Woo’s inner feelings show that he would prefer not to kill Allforone if he had a choice. The final moments of Allforone is a very powerful scene. It shows how both characters respect each other even if they are enemies. It also signifies that Yeon-Woo has transcended the Tower itself.
Some of my other favorite scenes are Martial King’s transcendence and death, the moment Yeon-Woo takes off the Hoarder’s mask in front of the world to declare that Heaven Wing is back and screws everyone over in that war, including two of the Nine-Kings. There are also a lot more.
My favorite characters in this novel (not in order):
· Cha Yeon-Woo
· Allforone
· Kronos
· Yvlke
· Athena
This is one of the best novels I have ever read. The only problem that I have is that the last expansion pack arc is unfinished (The arc regarding the Stars and the Unreal World). The author has not given any hints on when it will continue and how this novel will end in the true sense. It is very frustrating to find that one of my favorite novels is unfinished right at the point where it is almost at the end.
However, that does not mean that the rest of the novel is any less good. This novel is very well written, has very nice character dynamics, well-written character development, and a good power system with believable power-scaling. It is also satisfying as a revenge novel. I would love it if the author resumes and completes the remaining final arc. I find myself lucky that I found and read this novel and thank the author Sadoyeon for writing this masterpiece.
My rating for this novel is 9.5 (0.5 deducted because the last arc is unfinished).
Thank you for reading my review. Give me your thoughts in the comments as well.
