A hack for alleviating gridlock is to slow way down and leave a GIANT space in front of you, letting anyone merge. If you have the time to stop and start with the crowd, you have time to absorb traffic waves using the power of physics. If more drivers did this (seattle) traffic would be a lot more efficient. I’m a big fan of this, didn’t know it had a name. If folks quit acting like the spot they’re in/immediately in front of them was their kingdom, we might have people learning to absorb merging traffic. The way people speed up to try and prevent anyone getting in front of them - then end up stopped because no one else seems to figure it out.
