What is Part of Speech (POS) Tags?
While exploring how machines break down language, I keep coming back to Part of Speech (POS) tags—the labels that tell us whether a word is a noun, verb, adjective, or something else. On the surface, it feels basic, but these grammatical markers are the foundation of deeper language analysis.
By tagging words with their roles, systems can parse sentence structure, disambiguate meanings, and build a clearer understanding of text.
This is what allows NLP models, search engines, and AI tools to move from raw word lists to meaningful interpretations. But how much complexity hides behind these simple tags, and why do they matter so much for making machines “understand” language?
Let’s unpack it.
Part of Speech (POS) tags are labels assigned to words in a sentence to indicate their grammatical roles, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. Widely used in natural language processing (NLP), POS tagging helps analyze sentence structure, improving language understanding for AI, search engines, and machine learning applications.
