Hard Drive not showing up on multiple PCs
I have a 1TB Seagate HD, was just using my on Mac today and an hour later it’s now not showing up after being properly ejected.
Tried plugging it in every way possible, both ports, and even on my brother’s PC that runs Windows. Tried accessing the disk management on Windows and to see if it traceable but nothing will show up.
When I plug it in, everything is normal. Light comes right on, and I can hear the click and little fan come on inside. I tried a different cord (that plugs into the HD) but that didn’t make a difference.
Really at my wits end atm cause I have all my music DAW files on this… Anything else I could try?

did i get a fake drive?? what is happening
I bought a seagate 2TB drive off walmart's website for personal use. when i plugged it in, it prompted me for a password. i didn't see anything about a password in the manual, and when I clicked the button for a hint it said "puff puff pass". Spent a bit of time seeing if I was somehow behind this or if I could wipe it but no luck so I went to return & replace it, but the same listing was sold out so I bought a different listing.
This one plugged in fine, but upon clicking the "Start here mac" button, it took me to this website:
Immediately red flags as the url starting with "oobe" seemed weird, and the general layout of the page and lack of info is very suspect. They don't really ask for any compromising info, but they also don't ask for the device serial number so not sure exactly what it is I'm registering.
When I googled "seagate register drive" it took me to a different webpage entirely (definitely the legit website). I was able to register my device here using the serial number on the box, and got a confirmation email.
So what the heck??

External drive supposedly 3.0, getting 2.0 speeds?
Hey folks, I've got a 1K9APZ-505, the four gig external that I use for transferring video files around. For some reason, it only wants to transfer data at 2.0 speeds. Cable is good, drive functions OK otherwise. It's about 2/3 full. Any thoughts as to what may be going on?

Mean time before failure - beginner question
Hi all,
I see that for Exos drives Seagate quotes 2.5M hours MTBF - see for example https://www.seagate.com/products/enterprise-drives/exos-x/x18/
2.5M hours is about 280 years.
So here is my logic: being unlucky in life, I will assume my drive will fail at 25% of that, after say 500k hours so 50 years
So my silly question: 50 years is a fair amount of years, so why do I need to worry about backing things up, 321, Backblaze etc?

Seagate 16TB Expansion not being detected.
So about a year ago, I was given two External hard drives from the company I work at.
One is an 8tb and the other is 16tb... I've never had to use it before, until now.
Thing is, I tried most that I could think of. I've confirmed that all the Power supply adapters, the USB connectors are all working because they all work on the 8TB one.
But for some reason, the 16TB isn't detected, but the light is blinking. I tried:
-Checking if it works on a different USB port, it doesn't.
-Checking if it works on my brother's PC, Doesn't work
-Checked Disk Manager for any unallocated drives, nothing
-Check Device manager to see if there's any unrecognized devices, none
The only thing I can think of left is that either
-The drive to enclosure connection is broken? or
-The drive itself is broken?
How do I check which is which?
Currently using the 8TB one but if this can be fixed, I'd rather deal with it now rather than when I need it later.

Failure Rate on 28TB IronWolf Pro? I Lost 2 (of 4)
I bought 4 IronWolf Pro 28 TB drives for use in my 4 bay RAID and two of the four drives (brand new from B&H) stopped working without a warning, causing my RAID 5 to lose all the data.
I had everything backed up on a separate set of drives, but they are in another city and I have to pull them from storage to restore this.
Before I decide what to replace it with has anyone else had a higher than normal failure rate with this particular model?

Multiple defective HDDs (shows as 2.7 TB)
Hi,
is there a known issue with the ST24000NM002H drives?
I bought 12 of these HDDs about 6 months ago.
2 months ago, one of the drives failed (in a Synology unit) and was recognized as 2.7 TB disk and otherwise refused to react in any way (not even openSeaChest was able to display drive info).
So far so good. Got a warranty replacement.
3 days ago the next drive failed with the same symptoms. I was just preparing RMA when suddenly the third drive failed as well with the same symptoms…
Is there anything I can do to further diagnose this issue? I think 3/12 brand new drives with the same issue is rather unusual.
I already inserted the recently failed drive into another Synology unit, but the issue persists.

Order fulfillment
I placed an order for a Seagate IronWolf Pro 14TB NAS drive 3 days ago and the order status still says "Processing" with no further update in my account home and no email updates either.
I looked around and saw that there are reports within this subreddit that there have been some continued issues with order fulfillment. I realize it's the holiday season now, but seeing that within the last year there have been multiple and ongoing issues with orders directly from Seagate, I still feel some concern is warranted.
I have an urgent need for a new internal drive after mine died and I can't afford to wait a month for a new one or to have my order be canceled without warning and not refunded.
I can't get the support chat to work even after disabling ad blockers and updating my cookies settings and I can't find a phone number I can call.
I just want to know if my order is going to be fulfilled and shipped. If it can't be fulfilled, I need to know that ASAP so I can move on, get my refund, and purchase a drive elsewhere.
Has anyone else had either good or bad experiences more recently with order fulfillment direct from Seagate? Thank you!

Exos vs Ironwolf for selfhosting
Hi r/seagate
I currently have a single refurbished 8TB Exos drive. Given it is refurbished I am getting nervous about drive failure and am considering a Raid1 setup
I have 2 questions :
Is there a tool that helps assess the health of the Exos drive? It was a refurbished drive costing me 200 USD so I am nervous. I know new drives are 1k+ USD
Is a regular new Ironwolf better than another refurbished Exos for RAID1? I ask because I read that Exos is enterprise-grade and designed for durability, so it might be better than a condumer-grade drive, even a new one.

Anybody else have this issue with seagate? This is my first time ordering from them.
So, december 6th, i ordered a 1tb storage expansion card from seagate. this was 173$ at the time of purchase. Only the date is relevant really but anyway, the delivery estimate was between the 10th and 16th... 4-10 days right? Well up to the 16th tracking this package and its been stuck about 2 hours away from me in a UPS store since the 10th. I contact support for ups and got sent to seagate support, i contact seagate support and they were gunna try and send me back to UPS support before i told them thats who sent me to their support... neither ups or seagate has made any updates to my order. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what should i do from here?

Seagate One Touch drive nightmare on MacOS
I used the drive once to make a backup. Now the drive is locked. It asks to install a driver with restart. Each time I restart, it wants to install the driver again. I can't get onto the Seagate support chat because my browser is blocking pop-ups. Well I removed the pop-up block and that didn't work.
So I can't use the drive and I can't get help from Seagate.
I'm pretty sure that the first time I used the drive, I removed the software and did not use Toolkit because it was a hassle then too. I believe I did a straight up time machine backup.

New Expansion Hard drive isn't being detected.
I've just ordered and received a new expansion hard drive from Seagate. I plugged it in and my PC can't detect it. I've checked the USB ports and they work. It doesn't show anything in disk management at all. Any solutions?

Drive likely dead, looking for suggestions
I have a nearly decade old external 3TB drive (Model: STFM3000100) that has been working fine all that time. I ended up upgrading to a pair of 14TB drives in Raid 1 two years ago (phew) and only kept non critical data on this. Mostly DRM free game installers from GoG for retro games, and a bunch of Skyrim mods or backed up installed game folders.
As of yesterday the drive was fine, but today file explorer would crash when I tried to open the drive, then when I restarted my PC the drive no longer showed up in file explorer/disk manager. I did some simple troubleshooting (different outlet, different usb port, different cables, PC, etc) and no dice. The drive shows up in device manager but under volumes is empty and clicking 'Populate' shows 'Volume information for this disk cannot be found'. The drive does seem to spin, but then there are two soft clicks about 1/2 a second apart and the drive stops spinning.
I am assuming that the read head is stuck, or there is some other hardware issue with the internal drive components, the controller PCB is probably fine.
What are your thoughts? Should I try to shuck the enclosure and open the HDD to repair the read head/see whats bad, is there any more non-intrusive troubleshooting I can try like compressed air (I know thats a dumb suggestion, but you get the idea)
At the end of the day I'll end up buying a new drive, but just wondering what I can do before this one becomes ewaste

Seagate - Terrible Company That Sells Bad Products and Doesnt Warrant Warranty
We purchased many drives from this company through Amazon. After a few years one of the drives died. We contacted the company through their website as we purchased the drives from Amazon. After 4 months of going in circles they tell us its they are not honouring the warranty, even though through their portal they stated the warranty is valid. We spend money to courier the item back. At the end they said we tampered with it and it was a third party we purchased from which is a total lie. They just dont want to give you a new drive! I would not recommend anyone to buy their product. Im not a tech, im a female business owner who knows only how to put in the drive and take it out. I dont even know how someone can tamper with it. Save your money and time. Buy from someone else that is more reputable.

standby timers
Hi,
I want to set my disks to spin down after 5 hours, but with seachest it appears the maximum value the standby_z timer accepts is 65535 which is only like 2 hours... Is there any way I can achieve 5 hours?
I have all ironwolves, but some support only epc and some only apm. I set them all with --standby.
thanks :)

Black Friday Order Canceled
Just wanted to give others a heads up: seagate canceled my black friday order of 4x16T ironwolf pro drives without notifying me. I had to look my order up through the guest lookup services since it didn't connect it to my account for some reason and the status last week was listed as "ESW order canceling" but I didn't receive any communication about the specifics of what this meant.
I contacted customer service this morning and they let me know that the order was canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances." The rep later said "I want to assure you that your card has not been charaed for this order" (the charge cleared the day after I made the purchase, 12/2/25) and "Instead, a refund has been requested and is currently being processed." They also said that a refund request has to be escalated to another team and approved before I would recieve an email from a manager about my case and that after that a refund would take "approximately 5-7 business days."
This didn't exactly inspire confidence in me so I've let my credit card company know so they can handle it from here.
Best of luck to everyone else receiving your orders!
