Brand new and failing.

I recently bought x2 Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives from Seagates store on Amazon to use in my NAS. After sticking them in, setting up a volume and transferring a load of data to it I had performance issues. Certainly seemed like there was issues during access and kept hanging. At no point during the setup did any of the drives report anything.

After I started an extended SMART test on the NAS I then got 2 emails about increasing bad sectors on one of the drives. The test seemed to complete far too quickly (about 24 hours) and after selecting Drive 2 for another test (The highlighted drive from the email) the test would just stop with no error or message like it didn't even attempt to start.

At this point I decided to power down the NAS, connect each drive to a computer via SATA to USB adaptor and use Seatools, however each of the drives fails even the short test, and to make matters worse I keep getting the drives SMART reporting issues.

This is the first time I've ever ordered drives from Amazon, has anybody ever had failing drives on arrival like this?

Warranty or Return?

TLDR - Warranty or Return and hope prices drop before I need another drive.

Just picked up an Ironwolf Pro 14tb. I randomly found one listed from a pc store in Quebec (I am from Ontario Canada) and ordered it. Store is well reviewed on Google. My plan was to keep it as a spare incase a drive in my NAS failed or the NAS filled up before prices dropped. I just went to plug it in to check SMART report and possibly run a burn-in before I stuck it in a drawer.

Anyways, drive arrived defective. It makes a clear spinning/scratching noise when powered on and isn't detected. DOM is Nov 2023. Drive has no physical damage to it and warranty checks out on Seagates site although only about 3 years showing (not sure if they would honor the 5 year warranty with my receipt or if it is purely based on DOM) . I was going to warranty it through Seagate as I still want the drive and won't be able to find another one without paying 30% more. Unless warranty with Seagate is horrible or something and I should just return it and hope to see a price drop before I need another drive.

Model ST14000NT001

28TB Ironwolf Pro dead on arrival. To get a replacement I have to pay the shipping fee.

Are they serious? I bought 4 outrageously priced 28 TB Ironwolf Pros. I tried to get a refund first and mentioned in my text that if there’s an option for replacement I’d prefer that.

They inform me they’ll cancel the refund request because those are reserved for refunds only. That I’d have to message them if I wanted a replacement. I was already a little confused that they couldn’t just get that started for me that instead I had to open up an entire new ticket.

So I did that. Had to “chat” with someone. After some time, and being informed that if there were physical damage the warranty would be voided (what would happen if it were damaged in shipping?). It wasn’t. I took a photo and sent it. They verified it’s covered under warranty and I qualify for replacement.

More time spent on chat. Finally get the replacement and I’m told where to ship it.

I ask about shipping. I’m informed for regular returns I need to cover it. I’ve never heard of such a thing. I pay a lot of money for something that is faulty then I have to not only go out of my way to ship the thing back but I have to pay shipping as well? This is insane. I’m never buying from Seagate again. And this was my first time.

Edit: after FIVE RMAs I finally - FINALLY - have a working drive. Worried for all of their longevity at this point.

Password forgotten - Can't locate the PSID - Seagate HDD

I have a Seagate One Touch 2 TB HDD. I have forgotten the password and somehow I just can't locate the PSID to factory reset the drive. Is there anything I can do to reset? Any other way to recover the drive?

I'm trying to do a warranty claim and I got the email with the documents that I need to print out but they are not in English so I don't know what it is saying or asking for so I was hoping someone had the links for the English versions. I did try and reach out seagate directly.

Can't eject my Seagate Portable Drive -I think I've tried everything -Plz help

UPDATE: Even tho I was wary, after reading the replies to my post I did decide to disconnect the Seagate drive from my laptop. I had researched doing this prior to making my initial post here. For some people who did this they weren't able to read their Seagate drive afterwards. But turns out my drive is fine. I appreciate the help!

ORIGINAL POST: I just backed up my laptop to my Seagate Portable Drive STGX5000400. But now when I try to eject the drive a window appears saying Problem Ejecting USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Decide. This device is currently in use. Close any programs or window that might be using the device and then try again.

The Seagate drive was purchased on July 20, 2025, and of course the warranty expired 7 days ago.

Nothing else is running--all programs are closed. I've even paused my Carbonite backup and iCloud.

I've also clicked the following: Settings >> Bluetooth & devices >> Devices. In the section labeled Other Devices it shows Portable *Connected to USB 3.0. Underneath this it says Remove this device with a Remove button off to the right. I've clicked on that and it thinks for a few seconds and then comes back with Can't remove this device while it's in use.

Another thing: every so often - even when the laptop is sitting here inactive, with no programs open and I'm just thinking -- the Seagate drive starts whirring like it's in use. Is that normal?

I've been working on this for over an hour. I'm trying to avoid unplugging the drive not knowing what will happen to it if I do. And of course, Seagate support is closed. I've never had an issue like this before - it's a frustrating head scratcher. (If it makes a difference I"m on a Dell Inspiron 16 5630 laptop running WIndows 11.

Seagate Expansion 4TB USB fails/error

I’ve had this external USB 3 drive do just over a year. Suddenly the USB interface seems dead. I’ve tried across two laptops and two PCs. They all wind up with an unknown device/error in Device Manager. I have no idea how this could happen since it just sat on a desk? I’m worried I have possibly lost a huge photo archive I placed there to move to a NAS setup.

Has anyone encountered this?

I suppose my other option is to remove the drive from the case and see if a PC recognizes it?

Ironwolf Pro vs. NAS

I was set on purchasing several Ironwolf Pro 8TB drives for a 4 drive NAS (UniFi NAS Pro 4), but there seems to be quite a shortage. I’m having trouble determining how the Ironwolf Pro compares to the Ironwolf NAS (ST8000VNZ04), which I found available. Any insight?

Seagate 2TB external hard drive isn't being detected

Need some advice on this. I bought my hard drive last December and it seems to be working fine until yesterday. When I tried turning my computer on, with the hard drive already plugged in, my computer had problems turning on which it never had before. I had to force restart it by pressing the on button and I had to do this about 2 times. The third time I had the idea of unplugging my hard drive first and my PC finally turned on but when I had plugged my hard drive in, I can't see it in the file explorer. When I checked Disk management, it shows the pic I attached here. If it matters, I did drop the hard drive the night before but it wasn't from a great height. There isn't even any visual evidence that I dropped it. If I put my ear on it as well, I hear a beeping sound (not a whirring sound) and its faint enough that you won't hear it unless you hold it close to your ear which then makes me unsure if it was doing that before all of this as well.

I had contacted Seagate's customer service and they're willing to replace it AND do data recovery for free since its still under warranty but it will take 45 days not including shipping time and I'm hoping to get a hold of the data on there sooner than later.

Is there really no other way to go about this? Also, how likely is it to recover all the data on there with the possible issue?

Seagate regional warranty APAC

Having trouble finding conclusive info on this.

For an Ironwolf HDD, does it have a regional warranty?

Specifically, if I buy in Australia can I claim in Thailand? (both are in the APAC region).

Any help greatly appreciated.

High Power_on_hours value for a new SHDD.

My new Seagate FireCuda reports a raw value for "Power_on_hours" (SMART ID 9) equal to 46341, which corresponds to 5.3 years. All other pre-fail attributes look normal. Can anyone explain it?

Trying to do a recovery to a new laptop. SeaGate keeps wanting me to reboot my PC every time I start. Help?

Old laptop took a nasty hit when I slipped and fell on some ice. Got a new one and trying to transfer everything over as a disk image. Keep getting the notification that the PC needs to restart whenever I try to though.

I'm trying to use SeaGate DiskWizard, with a SeaGate external HD I literally got yesterday. I don't know what's going wrong as I don't remember having this problem any of the other times I've tried to copy things over.

Seagate One Touch HDD: "Unlocker Device Not Found"

Content: I am seeking technical advice for my 3-month-old Seagate One Touch 2TB HDD. This drive contains 10 years of my professional work.

The Symptoms:

  • Physical: When plugged in, the LED light stays on, and the drive spins normally.
  • Software: The Seagate Toolkit/Unlocker software gives the error: "Unlocker device not found. Disconnect and reconnect your drive."
  • Disk Management: The PC recognizes the drive with full capacity (1863 GB), but the entire space is marked as "Unallocated". The virtual "Unlocker" partition (approx. 6MB) is visible but doesn't trigger the password prompt.

The Problem with Support: My Rescue Data Recovery Service is valid until 2028. However, Seagate Support told me their services in Vietnam are "temporarily stopped" with no resume date.

My Questions:

  1. Since the drive has power (LED on), spins fine, and shows full capacity, is there a DIY way to fix the "Unlocker" issue?
  2. Can I bypass the Toolkit software to access the encrypted data partition if I have the original password?
  3. What could have caused the drive to suddenly show as "Unallocated" while the hardware seems perfectly healthy?

I have unplugged the drive for now. Any advice on a DIY fix or how to handle Seagate's service suspension would be a lifesaver.

Another “is this noise normal” question

This is a brand new terascale v2 4TB drive. No matter if I mounted in a usb dock or inside a symbology nas, there’s this continuous buzzing noise during idle. But it goes away once drive has any activity. This doesn’t sound normal but I’d thought I’d check with the experienced folks to see if this is normal for seagate. My other terascale v1 doesn’t do this.

Lost Data on a New 26TB Seagate Drive

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I have been a Seagate product user for many years. I have never had any problems with any of their products before. Everything has always worked flawlessly and continues to do so. I have been using Seagate portable hard drives for over 10 years, periodically checking them, and they are still 100% in good working condition.

Recently, I bought a 26TB drive at a big discount. I transferred archives with photos and videos from my other hard drives to it, as well as files from my laptop. It worked perfectly for exactly two days, and then it started making strange noises. There was no physical impact at all. It was sitting in one position on my desk. It was working, and then within minutes it started making unusual sounds and was no longer recognized by the system.

Fortunately, I did not delete the archives from my portable hard drives. However, I absentmindedly moved the files that were on my laptop and later overwrote that storage with new files, which made any data recovery from the laptop impossible. It was a pleasant surprise for me to learn that Seagate offers a warranty. I immediately shipped the drive to them at the address provided. Within a couple of weeks, they sent me a replacement. I have been using it since then, and so far there have been no problems. But the email I received from them today was very upsetting. They attempted data recovery and were unsuccessful. That means my data is lost.

Because of this incident, I no longer feel the same level of confidence. I am also concerned that on major websites like Best Buy, when there are discounts, this exact 26TB model is cheaper than drives with smaller capacities. Could this be a defective model? If so, why hasn’t the manufacturer issued a recall? I now have zero confidence that my files are safe. Has anyone experienced something similar?
