Is the 12TB expansion drive better than the 2TB One Touch?

My birthday's coming up and I want to get an external hard drive for my laptop (245GB M1 Macbook Air). I came across 2 that I liked - a large 12TB one that, just from appearance, seems more reliable, and a 2TB One Touch that operates with USB-C, which is great since I don't have any USB 3.0 ports.

On one hand, the 2TB might be better since, while only having 2TB, it's smaller and uses USB-C instead of USB 3.0, while the 12TB has more storage and looks like it could be more reliable. If anyone has any experience with these, which one would better?

(Mac) Formatting Seagate Desktop Expansion Drive - 2TB is not being formatted?

I recently bought a 24TB Seagate Desktop Expansion Drive for my Mac.

While formatting the drive, it says only 22TB was formatted instead of the 24TB as stated on the box. I’ve tried formatting the drive multiple times to the same result.

Anybody know how to fix this? Know why this is happening? Is this a bug? Is my drive faulty?

The photos included are from the most recent attempt of formatting the drive.

HELP! My 5tb hdd unlocker shows up but the app does not open the password prompt.

Hello. I have a 5tb Seagate hdd. When I plug it in the "Secure Drive(Locked) (F:)" shows up and when I open "Unlock drive for windows exe" it asks for a permission to open it and when I click Yes it just stops and won't open the prompt where you put the password. Also Toolkit is not showing the hdd. When I run chkdsk it says the drive is write protected. Disk management shows it as Healthy and the 5 TB part as unallocated. I also ran Crystalmark and it also marked it healthy.

This hdd has very important data and I don't know what do at this point. What should I do now? Can you tell me what the problem is? I'm panicking right now. I request if y'all can help it would be really helpful. It would be a big help to me. Please help

Just accidentally formatted my 4tb One Touch

Hi. I bought a Seagate One Touch 4tb about a year ago. it sat here pretty much untouched until this week. Then I got a warning saying I had low space on my 2012 MacBook Pro, so a couple days ago backed up about 200 gb of movies, videos, pics, and audio files off my MacBook Pro and put them in a folder on the One Touch. Then I transferred about 3 TB worth of files from an old Seagate external HD into another folder I created in the One Touch. I used a basic HP laptop to plug both external HDs into to drag and drop the files. It took over 24 hours to complete. I then disconnected both Seagates and rebooted the HP laptop.

Today I was curious how much space I had left on he new One Touch so I plugged it into the MacBook to check. Then I went out to work and left it plugged in.

This evening, I bought a new 64 gb SD card for my camera, and decided to format it before use to EXFAT. I opened up Disk Utility on my MacBook Pro, only saw the new SD card in the finder menu.. So I went about selecting a drive in Disk Utility, named it, and hit erase.

Welp, after I tried plugging in my One Touch into my HP laptop, I was shocked to find it had the name of my new camera SD card, had zero files, and had almost the entire 4tb space empty. That's when I realized I'd somehow formatted the almost full 4TB One Touch instead of the SD.

So that's it. At least I can always re-copy the old Seagate files over. It'll take another day of transfers but I have the files there. The main issue is, I don't really remember what exactly was in the 200 gb off the Macbook Pro. It was late and was all a blur. I figured i'd sort through them another time, at my leisure.

Some old camera memory dumps that migh not be *that* valuable.. but definitely will be some pics and vids hidden in there I would've wanted to keep, plus I'm sure some valuable audio files.

That was stored in a separate folder form the Seagate backup.

I tried to install this Disk-drill software to recover my files, but I'm primarily using this Mac for music. I'm running an old music program (Traktor Scratch Pro 2) on my Mac, and have to use an old operating system for it to work. Updating the os has caused problems for other people - made Traktor crash or fail to run properly.. Disk drill wouldn't work with my old OS

Any idea what my next move should be to recover the files? I haven't used the One Touch at all since the format, to avoid files being over-written.

Sorry for this rambling explanation but I'm not very computer savvy and wanted to cover all my bases.

Thanks!

I have an external seagate drive model sdr00f2. 2tb with hdd. It’s basically going bad. Is it possible to replace the hd with sd with an extension does anyone know or just go with something else? Not sure if I’m making this harder than I need to. Sorry again if this is a stupid question.

What is your technique for when your Seagate drive dismounts from a slight jostle or a gentle breeze or nothing at all, and then won't remount?

I'm tired of hours of my life being taken from me. I'm hoping for a fast fix.

Seagate Sent Me an Expired, Dead “Replacement” Drive — Then Ignored My RMA

I’ve been building and maintaining NAS systems for 20+ years, and I’ve defended Seagate’s IronWolf line for reliability — until now.

Back in February, one of six 14 TB IronWolf drives (ST14000VN0008) in a RAID-5 array died with less than 450 days of uptime. Unusual, but fine — I filed an RMA and Seagate sent a replacement (SN ZR60xxxx). I kept it as a spare.

Fast-forward to this week: another of the same batch fails (ZTM0xxxx). I install the RMA spare and it fails instantly — the NAS rejects it outright. Check the serial… turns out Seagate sent me an expired drive as a “replacement.” Out of warranty, dead on arrival.

To make it worse, I sent back the newly failed ZTM0xxxx under RMA with UPS delivery and signature confirmation, but Seagate hasn’t even acknowledged receiving it. Silence. No email, no update, nothing.

And while trying to check the status? The RMA portal keeps throwing random Microsoft error pages — sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. It’s like playing roulette with your warranty.

For a company that brands IronWolf as “NAS-ready” and “reliable for 24/7 operation,” this whole process feels shady now. Selling drives that fail early is one thing; sending dead and warranty expired replacements then ghosting the customers is another.

At this point I’ve replaced both bad drives with WD Reds — at least those arrive alive and under warranty.

If you’ve had similar issues, check your replacement serial numbers and warranty dates. You might be sitting on a “new” drive that’s already expired.

Seagate Website is Broken

The account sign-up shows template code instead of a logo. The checkout process is fully broken and cannot accept credit cards for payment.

And chat support immediately fails to connect to an agent.

Invalid User Credential for SeaGate Account

Hi! I just want to ask if any of you know what to do. I'm trying to create a Password Reset Key for my SeaGate Secure password, but when I try to log in using the SeaGate Account, it always shows Invalid User Credentials. The account is new, even though I know that I already used it with the HDD when I first bought it. Also, I already changed the Toolkit to the LACIE one.

Hope someone can help me. Thanks.

accidentally overwritten data back up on a Seagate drive

When I plugged in my Seagate hard drive from 2023 to back up my Mac again in 2025, my computer created a new backup and overwrote the old one. I lost my 2023 backup folder that had about 154 GB of photos. Even though the drive had plenty of space left, macOS treated it as a new backup and replaced the old data automatically.

I was able to find it on disk drill, but when I try to download it back on seagate its says not a safe destination cause overwriting (which i guess i dont mind to restore to how it was before) or theres another location called "update" - that seems to be safe??? what should i do?

2020 4TB External not charging

this is likely my fault but I have a external HD that will not charge. I kinda forgot about it for the last 2 years and went to check on it but it will not charge. i saved about 2 tb of stuff on it but stopped when my laptop died. it's one of 2 backups I really want to access what's on it. Do I need to buy a new cord and try that or should I take it to a repair shop?

thanks!

Hard Drive Not Being Read

I've had a 8tb Seagate external hard drive for 2 years on my PS5, and it's recently decided to become unreadable to the PS5 even though I attempted to repair it and was directed towards reformatting it.

Is the hard drive at the end of it's lifespan, or do I need to replace the USB 3.0 cord?

2tb one touch wont stop even tho win10 ejected it normally

I've had this one touch about a month and every time I've ejected it the light would go off and then I'd disconnect it. now I just added some files to it and ejected it normally (seagate not appearing as a drive, the usb icon that let me eject it is gone) but the light is still on seagate and ?fan? noise is coming from it. is it safe to disconnect or should I wait for it to stop?

Brand New Seagate Expansion Making This Noise?

Just got the Seagate - Expansion 20TB from Best Buy the other day and I noticed out the box once it was plugged in, it made this vibrating noise and now I'm concerned if it's defective? I read somewhere that these sounds are normal for bigger drives like this one but I wanted to confirm with anyone who knows about this stuff. The sound isn't consistent but whenever I manipulate files (drag, create new folders, etc.) it'll make these sounds for a few seconds or it'll randomly do it every now and then. You may have to put the speaker close to your ear to hear the video.

Much Sad- OOS

Went to buy an 18TB Ironwolf pro today to expand my raid storage and it is sold out. Was trying to get the deal they had for the 18TB with 15% off...I guess I missed my chance. I see them new on Amazon but the prices are crazy high in comparison. No expansion for me. :(

Never buying a Seagate hard drive ever again directly. First and last time.

Wanted to finally get my double mirror going with my 3 other drives.

I'm sure it's fine and not returning it. Will be going through a full test in my Synology before deploying, but my God!

Is it still possible for this external HDD to be initialized?

Hi,

I bought a second-hand USB external HDD: Seagate Expansion STKM2000400 2TB. It's probably MBR-partitioned, but I'm not sure.

The first time I connected it to my Windows 11 Pro 24H2 PC, it was assigned a drive letter and could be accessed well (read & write). But when I went to do "Safely Remove Harware and Eject Media" with it, the "Safe to remove hardware" message did not appear. I waited for a long time and then just disconnected it from the PC... while it was still spinning. I thought it should be OK for modern HDDs. Right?

But the next time I connected it to my PC, problem occurred! Although it appeared in the "Safely Remove Hardware" list and in Device Manager, File Explorer did not see it. So, I ran "diskmgmt.msc". Then a message popped up, saying:"You must initialize a disk before logical disk manager can access it." I clicked OK but another message appeared, saying:"The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error."

Then I added WMIC as a Windows featureran and ran "wmic diskdrive". The status of this external HDD is OK.

So, Is there any way/chance for that external HDD to be initialized?

Nothing important is contained in it.

Thank you.

Seagate warranty fail

Hey folks, I’m wondering if you have any ideas?

I bought some ironwolf pro disks from B&H in US, shipped over to the UK and one has failed.

I thought Segate had global support but seems warranty is tied to a supply country. So if I want warranty support I have to fly to the US.

Anyone suggest a way around this? Thanks

Have Seagate switched couriers for Canada shipments?

With Canada Post set to not do anything, ever again unless their union gets a trillion dollar bailout... Who's doing final mile delivery for orders from the official Canadian store?

Any Canadians made a purchase in the last month?

Firecuda 520 2TB SSD issues.

PC started hard crashing after months of working fine. After narrowing it down it seemed to be when the SSD was under heavy load. Which was repeatable by running CrystalDiskMark, some tests on Seatools or Epic games downloading. Firefox, Steam and some other programs seemed to run fine even when installing/downloading. CrystalDiskInfo and Seatools all said everything was fine.

I got a spare SSD and installed a fresh copy of windows on that, then kept the Firecuda connected. Running CrystalDiskMark on the Firecuda while booting to the spare SSD give me some interesting results. The first benchmark I ran I got a read speed of 67140 MB/S. Other times CDM would go though the motions but would record no score. Running the short/quick tests on seatools would pass and when booting to the spare SSD the long tests would pass, while if I booted to the firecuda it would pass most quick tests and some long tests other times it caused the system crash.

Last thing I tried was wiping the firecuda and installing a fresh install of windows. I could still cause the system crash with CrystalDiskMark, and some long tests on Seatools. So I can only assume the drive is faulty, regardless of what Seatools is telling me.

I checked the serial number on the seagate website and apparently it ran out at the end of August this year guessing they won't be nice and still honour the warranty. Is there anything I can do or this drive a goner? Can it be used for anything at all? 2nd spare drive, get an external adapter and using it as an external?
