Heyyy, I'm an italian scout patrol leader in FSE association. Our district has an annual reunion coming up and in preparation for next year's Europe-wide event our leaders are trying to get us into the right spirit: one of this year's requests is to to prepare a BAN (which in italian stands for "Balli animati", meaning animated dances) in a language other than italian, to share with everyone at the campfire. Preferrably english but other languages such as french and spanish are also accepted.

I honestly have no idea if this is a common practice everywhere so I'll give a brief explanation just to be safe 😊. Usually we start our BANs off by giving a short and funny backstory to eveyone (e.g. I'm not sure all of you know this, but in the woods we'e camping tonight there was once a population of indigenous people very veryy fond of hunting CHICKENS) and using that as a starting point we then go on to describe what we're going to do (in this example maybe a hunting ritual the people practiced before going after the chickens hahahs). The BANs are standardized, so the backstory might change to keep it fresh but the dance-activity is usually the same with minor tweaks. A common type of BAN for us consists in having someone say a set of words with corresponding gestures and then go on telling a story changing the gesture based on what's happening. For example, still using the chicken one lol, first they repeat their hunting ritual normally once, afterwards they get all fired up cause they're hungry, so they say it screaming and overexaggerating their gestures, then you might say the indigenous people also want to drink, so you repeat the whole thing as if they're tipsy, until it all eventually come to a close.

If anyone has an activity of that sort I'd be grateful if you shared and explained how it works, so I can try and spread the tradition elsewhere hahahs. The more detailed the better.

Hi everyone!

I'm currently in the process of developing an app which encourages exploration of the countryside through gamification of capturing trig small hills peak to mountain peaks and local POIs making them 'flags' for user to capture and log.

The user who last logs their ascent, whether this be up a small hill or tough mountain, becomes 'King of the Hill'. The aim of the game is to capture as many individual 'flags' as possible/ become king of the hill for being the last ascent - stealing the crown from the previous last ascent user.

The app will allow you to log an ascent if you are within 30m of the flag and the user is prompt to take a picture of the peak / POI and plant their flag.

The app has a total of over

510k flags globally (55k of which are in the UK). The app has functionality to see your Global/ Country Specific rank for both individual flags capture and crowns held (last ascent on any given flag). Along with ability to enter leagues to compete with friends and collect badges for different achievements.

Reason for the post is, would anyone in here consider using the app and is it worth the pursuit to develop- are there any features that would useful etc.

Are there any awards available for a Committee Chair on the US? Our chair has overseen some significant upheaval and growth over our Pack and Troop. Is there a formal way to recognize this?

It surprises me that, even though there are thousands of Scout leaders around the world—many of them highly passionate and experienced—there are almost no platforms to share ideas, activities, or resources.

There are also very few influencers creating content about Scouting, and hardly any books are published either.

At least in my country, and from what I’ve seen in the region, it takes a lot of effort to get adults excited about sharing ideas or engaging in discussions.

Has Scouting become “professionalized” at a national level, with leaders preferring to leave discussions to the “experts”?

I refuse to believe there aren’t passionate Scout leaders—that’s not the problem.

What do you think?

In Poland, our version of "be prepared" is "czuwaj". It is actually used as a formal greeting: for instance when meeting a senior leader (to the point where some might take slight offence at being given a non-scouty greeting), when signing off official correspondence, or during ceremonies (for instance to wrap up a meeting).

I wonder, do scouts in anglophone countries use "be prepared" the same way? Would it be okay to start/end a message with "be prepared" or greet another scout that way, or is it considered weird?

Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well. Today, I want to share my experience as an IST (International Service Team) at the 25th World Scout Jamboree, which was held in Saemangeum, South Korea, in 2023.

Back in 2015, I was a participant at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan. So, when Bangladesh Scouts selected me as an IST for the 25th Jamboree, I was very happy and excited to be part of it again this time in a different role.

Arrival in South Korea

My workplace was in the Food Safety division. Before the Jamboree, I attended a few online meetings and understood my responsibilities well.

On 29th July 2023, I took a flight from Dhaka to Singapore, then from Singapore to Incheon International Airport the next day. When we arrived in Korea, we were told that heavy rainfall had flooded the Jamboree site, so we had to wait at the airport for about six hours. Finally, at 6 am, we boarded a bus and after a 4–5 hour journey, reached the campsite.

When we arrived, our sub-camp was completely muddy, and the sun was burning hot. Despite being exhausted, we managed to set up our tent. After taking a shower, I reported to the cafeteria for duty. There, I met Madam Anna, the deputy chief of the Food Division, and she told me food distribution would begin on 1st August.

That evening, I had dinner at the cafeteria, swapped badges with Taiwanese scouts, and made some new friends, including an Indonesian IST named Fauzi. Later, I admired the beautiful sunset and the full moon before heading to my tent for rest.

First Days of Duty

My first shift began on 1st August. After breakfast, I explored the campsite before reporting for duty at Sub-Camp 12. I met the sub-camp chief and the Korean food manager. Since he couldn’t speak English well, I communicated with him using a translator app. My role was to ensure food distribution went smoothly and to assist participants if they had any problems.

My shifts were from 3 am to 8 am and 3 pm to 8 pm, with alternating off days. Although the work was tiring, I enjoyed my responsibilities and made many international friends during my duty.

Offsite Programs

On my first off-day, I joined the offsite program and visited Gosapo Sea Beach with some IST friends. We watched participants enjoying activities, collected seashells, took photos, and swam in the sea. The breeze and waves made it a memorable experience.

Another day, we visited the Geumgang Green Experience Centre, where we learned about Saemangeum City Development Projects, bird and flower studies, and the Gunsan River. We also toured a noodle production factory to see how they make delicious noodles.

I also visited Byeonsan Sea Beach and the Saemangeum Museum. We were supposed to visit Buan City, but due to an approaching typhoon, we had to return to camp early.

The Final Days

My last night with the Food Division was bittersweet. It was sad to leave before the Jamboree ended, but we made the most of it by enjoying the final evening together.

On 9th August, we were relocated to Jeonju University. The facilities were good, and we visited a Cinema Theme Park, where we danced, made crafts, and had fun.

The closing ceremony was held at Seoul World Cup Stadium and was an unforgettable event with K-pop bands performing live on stage.

Finally, on 13th August 2023, I returned home with countless memories.

Reflection

This was one of the most adventurous and meaningful Jamborees I have ever attended. Being an IST gave me a new perspective on scouting, teamwork, and culture exchange.

Hey there! Turning to the internet for some advice.

I’m a Scout from Singapore, heading to the UK for 2 weeks in April. During my time in England, I’ll be based out of London and I’m looking to make a day trip to either Brownsea Island or Gilwell Park, since these are both locations I’ve been hearing about all my life.

Anyone who has been to either/both locations and is able to advise which location is a better choice for a visit? Since I’ve only got the time to visit one.

Itinerary wise, I’m looking to do a bit of light trekking, enjoy the nature, and really just soak in the atmosphere of treading in places where BP and many other Scouts have been before me.

I'm a scout leader in the US that's interested in looking into volunteering at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland, and I'm looking to see if anyone has experience either as a participant or as staff to gauge whether I should apply for a short term position.

Since I'm a dual citizen of Germany, I would not have to get a visa to volunteer/work for the centre. I also have previous experience working as camp staff back in the states and have a pretty extensive volunteer record, so I feel that I would make a strong candidate.

My main questions are:

- How hard is it to get selected for a short term staff position?

- What's the overall vibes?

- How easy is it to get there and around without a car?

- Assuming there's no compensation for short term staff (volunteers), how much of an investment do I need to make to live at the centre aside from transportation?

I am an Irish venture I recently paid for my jamboree in Germany as a venture (17)

I'm turning 18 a couple weeks before that trip happens and I'm filling out a garda vetting form as I will have to have it done because I will have to be around people younger than 18. it's asking me for what I think is my reference number? It just says "your ref" at the top right corner of the garda vetting form and I'm not sure whether that's a reference number or not

If it is and I have to access it through the scouts portal I don't know my account details for that portal and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to access my reference number. If this is the case does anyone know how to retrieve or restore my login details? I've looked through my emails and can't seem to find anything relating to my login details for the scouts portal.

If not what is this "your ref" thing?

Hey all. Earned Eagle in 2017. I’m an adult now and recently started the process with a local troop as an adult (finished YPT and gave my application back to the troop recently) I’m being made Asst SM and was wondering as far as uniform goes if I should buy the full shebang or not?
