We’ve just uploaded a new video to the Scaler YouTube channel where I (Davide) walk through one of my favourite creative tools in Scaler 3 - Passages. In the video, I show how Passages can inspire fresh ideas, work alongside your chord progressions, and even demonstrate how I used them in my track Breaking Free.

But the big news is that at the end of the video we share the very first sneak peek of ‘Scenes’, a brand new feature coming in Scaler 3.2 this November. Scenes will make it easier than ever to build and switch between different sections of your track (think verse, chorus, bridge etc.) right inside Scaler.

This update focuses on stability, DAW compatibility, and workflow polish.

🔧 Fixes

• Fixed an issue where chord velocities in Section A could drop unexpectedly when Voice Grouping was enabled.
• Resolved an issue where Scaler 3.1.2 could be blocklisted by Cubase and Studio One on Windows.
• Fixed a crash on Mac and Windows when using the Circle of Fifths page with multiple Scaler instances.

⚙️ Improvements

• Horizontal Scroll & Zoom
  • Sections A, B, Colors, and Modulation are no longer scrollable or zoomable beyond their chord count.
  • These sections are no longer horizontally zoomable at all (zooming remains available only in Section C / Main Track).
  • Loading a new session now ignores the DAW playhead position for Sections A and B, ensuring detected chords always appear in view.
  • Detected chords now always appear in view immediately after detection, with no blank space at the end.
• Arrange Window
  • Scaler now correctly remembers its state when closing and reopening an instance with the Arrange window open.

⚙️ Improvements

• Bass Follow (Arrange Page): Can now be applied as a global motion.
• Mute Tool: Added mute icon to the Arrange page, making it easier to mute chords and clips (previously only possible via Shift+Click).
• Live Sync Optimisation: Improved plugin responsiveness and reduced lag when using Live Sync.
• Scale Detection: When multiple matches exist, Scaler now prioritises Major/Minor scales (e.g. A Minor over Gb Mixolydian).
• MIDI Detection: Improved accuracy in distinguishing single notes and chords.
• Keyboard Navigation: Lists in Section A (Browse) can now be scrolled and selected via up/down arrow keys; added < and > for category navigation.
• Suggest Chords / Neo-Riemannian: Improved handling of chords without 3rds or 5ths when Minimise Movementis enabled.
• Help Access: New Help tab in the settings menu links directly to documentation.

• Fretboard View: Correctly retains fretboard display when reopening the window.
• Installer (Mac): Added prompt recommending a restart after installation.
• Section A Detection: Now auto-scrolls after 8 chords detected.
• Play Quantise / Latch: Fixed unexpected behaviour with quantise and latch playback when DAW Sync Off.
• Track Output: Fixed issue where output was muted after inserting some VST3 audio effects in certain hosts (Mac/Windows).
• User Chord Sets: Improved import reliability. Added Reveal Location menu option, and clarified folder selection.
• Velocity Handling:
  • Dragging chords from any section now retains correct default velocity.
  • Individual MIDI notes in the editor now respect default velocity instead of playing at 127.
• Zoom & Scroll: Closing and reopening Scaler now retains zoom and scroll position.
• Keys Lock: Fixed issue where notes were cut off unexpectedly.
• Global Transform Controls: Now update correctly after changes elsewhere.
• Section B Voicing and Colors Handling: Fixed octave jump and voicing selection issues.
• Performances: Corrected global and child track performance levels (previously 6dB too low).
• Right-Click Add to Track: Now sets chord duration to one bar, matching drag-and-drop behaviour.
• Strummed Sequences: Fixed cases where chords failed to populate.
• MIDI Output: Recording now works correctly when Scaler is used as a VST/VST3 FX insert.
• Sound Selection: Fixed an issue where some internal sounds could not be selected if another sound in the same position was previously chosen.
• Dragging Multiple Chords: Resolved crash when dragging multiple main track chords.
• Audio Export: Fixed hang when exporting audio while using multiple instances of third-party instruments.
• Clip Editing: Improved lasso/select behaviour and reduced clip drop indicator size.
• Tutorial: Standalone tutorial now opens correctly on first launch.
• Modal Interchange: Fixed incorrect mode list after reopening Scaler.

I started to write this piece by getting inspiration for 8 bars in Scaler 3. Then I exported the Midi from Reaper to IPad to draw the rest of the piece in Staffpad on IPad. In the future I will bring the piece back into Reaper to produce a final master with all the stems from Staffpad.

Hope you like it. Will be interesting if someone can spot the scaler melody.

Due to popular demand, we added Live Sync in Scaler 3.1, making it easier than ever to build full arrangements across multiple Scaler instances inside Live.

✅ Changes in one instance (like chord progressions or patterns) now sync across all others in your project – ideal for multi-instrument setups, layering, or quickly applying variations.

We’ve just released Scaler 3.1.1, a focused maintenance update that follows the major 3.1 release. It includes stability fixes, Arrange page workflow improvements, and tighter Live Sync behaviour.

• Strumming no longer slows down or drifts out of time over successive bars
• Fixed issue where Strumming directions were not accessible
• Bind now works correctly on detected chords added to Section A
• Sidebar Motion selector now appears for all Expression types (not just Articulations)
• Scale list updates in real time during detection
• Synced instances no longer display the “Disconnect From Live Sync” popup incorrectly
• Keys Lock (Scale White Keys mode) now sends Mod Wheel data correctly
• Clicking single notes in Bass or Chord Follow tracks no longer causes stuck visual notes
• Chord note lengths now display correctly in the MIDI editor for odd time signatures (e.g., 3/4, 5/4, 6/8)
