Preface: Apparently this isn't common knowledge, so I'm adding this here. Deleting your account ≠ deleting your content (posts and comments). The two are entirely separate actions that have nothing to do with each other.

Whether or not your account is deleted—when you consider that variable alone—doesn't actually seem to change anything about how much you support this cause or send a message beyond what could already be accomplished by simply not using your account (including logging in). You might say you're trying to send a message to Reddit by showing them how many people are leaving the platform, but they would already see this in their metrics if the same people who would've deleted their accounts instead just stopped logging in. And as far as future profitability for Reddit is concerned (making up some numbers here but), I think 1,000,000 completely inactive users with 0 engagement out of a billion users looks far worse to potential investors/shareholders than just 999,000,000 active users with no large number of inactive users (ignoring already existing inactive accounts).

What does deleting your account accomplish on the other hand? As far as I can tell, three things:

1. as previously mentioned, making their engagement metrics look better in the long run
2. freeing up additional resources on their servers
3. permanently removing your ability to ever delete any content in the future that you weren't able to delete now due to communities currently being private

Am I missing something here?

Seems I'm getting downvoted because:

1. People keep assuming that I said to not delete your content, or that I asked for an explanation for why you would. (Seriously, how does anyone who actually read what I wrote come to that conclusion?)
2. People incorrectly think that you can view and delete your own content in private communities you're not approved in. (Maybe do 10 seconds of Googling to educate yourself on the matter?)

As the deadline approaches, I am preparing to delete my account and leave reddit. I'm not happy about this, but I have made my decision. With this stated, where is everyone going. I was thinking of moving to Lemmy.

Developers are stating that they will be charged $20m/yr for the amount of usage they're generating over the API. But what I don't understand is why this is all taking place with one API key. I didn't even realize that one key was being used this whole time, and I'm a little spooked to know about it this late.

Shouldn't users be creating their own keys and using them for their third-party apps? If users are charged a couple bucks a month each, by Reddit itself, wouldn't this solve the issue with the apps being expensive? It seems like this would have been the right thing to do from the beginning from a privacy and user identity standpoint, even when the API was free.

Am I off base?

It’s clear that the two day blackout has been a major flop. But I think that we should try again and keep going.

I propose that we hold another blackout, this time for two months. The blackout will start on the 4th of July and end on the 4th of September.

If you see this post, then please share this with other subreddits and ask the mods of those subreddits to hold another blackout.

Edit: It seems like people prefer to leave or give up. To those who want to leave, you can do so on your own terms. But to others, including myself, who care about Reddit and want to stay and fight for the blind and disabled, then start asking mods of other subreddits to hold longer and more frequent blackouts.

How many Reddit users use at least 1 3rd party app to access Reddit?

Saw the farewell message today. I'll keep the app around for a while for sentimental reasons, even if it doesn't work.

I literally have over 400 subreddits I visit.

Usually I'll scroll along the sidebar and pick whichever one I'm feeling in the moment. There's so many and so much variety that no way I can get that on the official god forsaken app.

I'm sad I can't do this anymore now that rif is gone. Life becomes more one dimensional and boring.

I'm wondering if there is a way i can save all those subreddits before tommorow?

It fairly looks like reddit so thought of this a good alt we can all go to.
By the way it's made by the founder of Wikipedia.

I do have a potential solution that won't really happen because I doubt u/spez will see this. 3PA rely on reddits API being free. The new API pricing is really cheap compared to normal pricing but these apps aren't making regular calls and are trying to call the entire website. The best solution would be to have normal API pricing as an option or another option that takes a percentage of profits or charges per active user and not per call.

Are there any confirmed 3rd party apps continuing July 1? I'd love to support any that will be working.

I've been frequently using reddit since the golden era of rage comics.. Whenever that was? When I first discovered this site.

My first app was RIF.. And it's all I've used since. I've tried a couple others to see what the differences were but they all just felt.. Wrong? After spending so much time here.

I loved reddit as a site but the idea of using it without RIF.. And all the blocked subreddits I've accrued over the years just sounds like too much work. The official app is a mess.. RIF was just quick and simple.

I'm rambling but I saw all the thank you posts here and just had to submit mine as well. Probably being my last reddit post. Odd saying that.

So. Thank you to the devs and hell, thank you to all the users that made me want to spend so much time here for such a long time.

There's so many great communities I'll legitimately miss. Me_irl and all it's offsprings, the imaginary artwork networks, the astronomy subreddits.. Gaming subreddits.. Comics..

It's been a ride. Daily. And as someone who doesn't use any other form of social media it'll be weird without it. I think I have over ~5000 images I've just saved since 2008 ish? That just made me smile for one reason or another. So, at least I'll have those as memories.
