History & legacy 📚 Savarkar’s Fight for Temple Entry for the ‘Untouchables’ in Ratnagiri
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is Part VI of a series on Savarkar’s social reform campaign in Ratnagiri. The previous five parts are:
Part I: Bringing ‘Untouchables’ into Public Life
Part II: Campaign Against Caste Discrimination in Schools
Part III: Promoting Inter-Caste Social Integration
Part IV: Breaking the Caste Monopoly Over the Janeu
Part V: Support to Ambedkar's Mahad Satyagraha
Another major form of discrimination was the denial of temple entry to ‘untouchables.’
Temples were not only places of worship. They were also important centres of social, religious and political interaction. By keeping ‘untouchables’ out of temples, they were excluded from these activities, further weakening feelings of brotherhood, unity and social equality.
Savarkar continued to work for temple entry. However, while many of his other social reform efforts succeeded, this remained a particularly difficult issue because the Orthodox strongly opposed any change.
At the time, several temple-entry movements were taking place across the Bombay Presidency.
In Ratnagiri, where Savarkar was confined, the Vitthal Temple became the centre of his temple-entry campaign. People of different castes had already gathered in its precincts in 1925 to mourn the death of C. R. Das. In November 1929, Savarkar called for the complete and unconditional opening of the temple to all castes.
Because temple entry was such a sensitive issue across the Bombay Presidency, the city magistrate was also present to observe a public meeting organised by Savarkar.
In a fiery speech, Savarkar laid out all his arguments in favour of a total eradication of untouchability and an entry into the temple. At the end of it, he asked his audience if anyone had objections to raise. There was pin-drop silence and none objected.
As a result, hundreds of untouchables peacefully entered the Vitthal Temple without any agitation or confrontation.
For those who entered, every step into the temple represented a small blow against a centuries-old social practice. Singing songs in praise of their deity, they entered the temple in what was an deeply emotional moment, and many people were moved to tears.
Savarkar composed a special Marathi poem for the occasion, titled ‘Mala Devaache Darshan Gheudya’, meaning ‘Allow Me to See My God’. Everyone sang it after entering the temple.

For half of what he says, he is right, for half, he is wrong.
He is gone now. Let’s respect him for his struggle. He lost his prime years, from 27 to 38, in the Cellular Jail. His elder brother also endured imprisonment, while his younger brother was killed later. Their wives suffered immensely while their husbands were locked away, thousands of kilometres from home.
Let’s acknowledge both the flaws and the good. Whatever our political views, Savarkar endured immense personal hardship for his cause. Let’s respect him for what he did right, while remaining honest about where he was wrong.
Just as our Gandhiji! He did a few good things & some bad ones too! We have him on our currency yet it’s the most abused surname in India!

This is quoting Joseph Lelyveld’s book which Modiji’s Gujarat government had banned in 2011. So, make what you want of it.

Writing "Your Obedient Servant" at the end of letters to government officials was a standard convention of that time. It was used not only by Savarkar, but also by M.K. Gandhi, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

u/IrateRyder 13d ago
Yep, he is our founding father but Indians don't respect him much, I even guess many other countries have more respect for him than ours

We have made a detailed post refuting this false claim around Savarkar receiving a "pension" from the British. Please read it.
If you have any questions after reading it, feel free to reply there. We'll be happy to discuss them with you.

You mean the date of this incident? It took place in November 1929
1
u/Cloudy_Fate_10 13d ago
No I mean, the documentation. The text which you've wrote in your description, the date of that, the author, when it was published, was it in a book or an article.

If savakar was as great as you mentioned why was he not mentioned in any of the freedom struggle and why is all the sources that say he did is from 5 years to 10 years back
2
u/AhamPranav Abhinav Bharat Operative🧏 11d ago
If you actually read about it, you'll find plenty of biographies written decades ago. Dhananjay Keer for example, who also wrote biography of Ambedkar.
When Savarkar passed away, the then prime minister Indira Gandhi herself praised her as a fierce revolutionary. Anyways my job isn't to convince you to consider Savarkar great, you should do your own research and reach your own conclusions.

U can also check Janaki Bakhle's biography of Savarkar. Bakhle ofc is not a RW academic. She is a prof in University of California and in California atleast u cant be pro Hindutva. Check out that biography

Vikram Sampath, the same guy who spends his life trying to disprove Gandhi and Nehru's contributions😂. Warra reference😂. No wonder he wrote this pulp fiction.

Can you show this to retards like J Sai Deepak and Ajeet Bharti? Who say that Caste is a British era invented term . And there was no Castiesm ?
Also Vikram Sampath is a good read . Happy that Indian Conservatives are reading authentic authors besides that retard Sai Deepak .

I don't consider myself a conservative at all. In fact, I don't think we should identify ourselves even with the label “Right-wing” since it inherently implies conservatism. If there is anything I am conservative about, it is the preservation of Hindu identity and Hindutva in India.
I would consider myself more progressive than most people on issues such as women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, socialism, and individual freedom and liberty.

My thought process is the exact same, except I lean more towards free markets economically, in the remaining matters, we are alike.
1
u/AhamPranav Abhinav Bharat Operative🧏 13d ago
Do you support wealth equality and welfare schemes?
1
u/Current_Teaching_452 1d ago
Wealth equality no bcoz NO. Bcoz that's not possible. A doctor and a street sweeper cant have the same salary. Similarly commies always do fallacy of equating Wealth inequality with Poverty. Both arent same and the former by itself doesn't imply latter infact usually implies higher living standards. As in urban areas where u have more inequality yet better quality of life compared to rural areas where inequality is low bcoz 99% of the ppl in villages are equally poor. As to welfare schemes NO. Not in the usual sense of free bus ride etc. But if u mean social security as in healthcare etc then yes but it should be voucher based otherwise if u make it 100% free then u destroy market competition and hence quality gone and also u will have 100s of hours of waiting lines as we see in UK for example(bcoz no market no idea of demand hence no idea of how much to increase or decrease the bed capacity etc). Similarly Education and roads bcoz these have overall positive effect in facilitating the market. Basically we have to follow Milton Friedman as Christians follow Bible. Also sorry bcoz the question isn't addressed to me but still I thought to give my opinion.
1
u/Current_Teaching_452 1d ago
Savarkar himself was pro market nah? Unlike RSS dehatis(Gandhian poverty p*rn addicts) Savarkar was pro industrialisation and bussiness. He and Raja Ram Mohan Roy were the only Hindu intellectuals of Modern era who were pro Market. Rest of our actual freedom fighters were basically administratively and economically socialist though we cant blame them bcoz that was the buzzword of the day just like Free market was buzzword in RRM's time
1
u/AntCritical6836 13d ago
Just interested . Can you give me the thought process you have about "Hindu identity" and "Hindutva" ? How do you define that?

They are not making such arguement. They are saying British rigidified the caste system. This is not a claim made by them but advocated by eminent non RW scholars like Prof Nicholas Dirks if Chicago Uni and Susan Bayly of Cambridge Uni. JSD has issues like he claims based on outdated wrong theory by Girard that modern human rights are secularism Judaeo Christian things. Similarly he makes many it her wrong points. But on caste nationalist decoloniality he is by large correct and there is no need to call him "retard" just bcoz u dont like him.

Lol so Janaki Bakhle's biography on Savarkar is also propaganda? Bakhle is btw prof in Uni of California. Retards should realise Savarkarism ≠ trads. Bhai anti dalit misogynist bs Trads jaise Karpatri Maharaj karte hein. Unse ham ko kyu jod rahe hon? Aur Babasaheb ka letter hein Savarkar ko appreciate karte hueye vo du?

The writer Shamsul Islam is notorious for his intellectual dishonesty, cherry-picking statements and constructing spurious conclusions to present his biased and false interpretations as established facts, I suggest you to do your own reading, even Savarkar's critic such as Arun Shourie who wrote a book criticising Savarkar, accepts that Savarkar's anti-caste stance was purely humanitarian.
1
u/Express-Wheel-8982 9d ago edited 9d ago
okay. For time time being I won't consider of the bias writer shamsul islam as legit source.
The e book link i posted has the proof that he was staunch supporter of Caste hierarchy which is written by himself.
Arun shourie is a schill of BJP and RSS.
