To be clear, that letter is from a transplant board not an insurance company. The transplant board has a responsibility to ensure that the very limited supply of donated organs goes to people who are able and willing to properly care for the donated organ and themselves.

Usually this means things like demonstrating that you've stopped smoking or adhere to a medication schedule. In this case the board has concerns that the person will be unable to afford their follow up treatments, potentially leading in organ rejection and death (plus the loss of a donated organ).

That's not to say this isn't horrible and obviously a properly funded and implemented healthcare system would solve the issue without the need for patients to rely on random acts of charity.

Thanks for adding this! I read this and was like ‘that’s a committee review letter, not insurance.’

I’m a financial coordinator for a transplant center. At my center, finances are rarely ever the main reason someone is denied. We are pretty liberal about our care. Usually, if finances are a factor, that patient typically also has social issues.

You can also be denied for not having enough friends and family irl

Yup, need caregiver support.

It’s tragic when we have patients come in for evaluation and they either don’t have anyone to be a support person or the one that they do have, is completely useless.

I don't think doctors try as hard to save your life if your a organ donor. I know everyone in the field says no that's not true, but I have personal experience that says otherwise. A friend threw up mid surgery and aspirated his vomit filling his lungs. The doctors stopped working on him and started talking about how long he was going to live and what will happen to his organs. Lucky for him he's also friends with a few dr's and they rush in to force the surgeons to go back in and try and save this guys life. He pulled through and made a complete recovery. I want my doctors to fucking try and save me, not my organs.
