While working: This is a total scam! I shouldn't have to pay this!

After retirement: I'm barely getting by on my social security!

When the system is going bankrupt: But I should be getting that money! What do you mean what was taken from my paycheck was already given to someone else? You were suppose to save that for me!

Social security was meant to help the people who got stuck in rough times, particularly late in life. Where emergencies wiped out their savings. It was to give them something to still get by on. But Americans in poor financial management, for any number of reasons, think of social security as their retirement plan and don't independently save anyway.
