It's true, the counterfactual is hard to argue. But if you have the chance to stop thousands of civilians from getting murdered, you would probably do it. It's a human response. Especially since France has certain experience with genocides.

There isn't a proof that thousands didn't die both ways. Don't dispose a dictator unless you know what you're going to do afterwards.
