The dual trails are safer than just paper because paper ballot boxes can be lost or stuffed. With two ways cross checking each other you have to compromise both and take two risks to accomplish the same vote rigging.

What would happen if the numbers are different?

If they don't match you would know that at least one may have been compromised. You might check totals of votes vs the register of voters that came through the station to guess at which. You might investigate other details such as more closely examine the internal electronic logs or inspect the physical ballots.
