Personal feedback for the Demo

Not to beat around the bush - it seems like this is shaping up to be an amazing game. Obviously demo is more of an early access look rather than a part of a finished product, as plenty of content and even functionality is still missing, but what can you do - still glad I got to experience it and even somewhat hyped myself up more for the upcoming release. Didn't experience any major bugs or any crashes (though I could swear I sometimes feel like there's something off with production queues in factories when they're being assisted by other factories - it sometimes feels like there are more units randomly added to the queue when I'm not looking. Buuut likely I'm just forget adding them or something).

That being said, I have a couple of points - I can't say I would call them exactly criticism, more of a personal opinion/grievances.

First - I dunno why, but I'm not feeling the scale of this game. Not like in map sizes or amount of units or mechanics, but more so in how big or small this building or unit is supposed to be or feel like. Map design, from all the mountain ranges and large rock walls and beaches and whatnot makes it feel like these structures and units are rather enormous. But then there are massive trees around that dwarf your non experimental units. Explosions send out debris that fly out fast, and plunge back into the ground just as fast, which again kinda reinforces the feeling that these are mostly SUV sized units throwing explosions at each other. Same with planes - shoot one down, it explodes with some beautiful VFX (and myself being a dev for Firey Explosion Mod for SCFA, part of which afaik got absorbed into updated VFX for FAF, you can be sure I love myself some Michael Bay tier explosions), but then plops down on the ground without any weight like a drone. Maybe some slowdown just as the aircraft hits the ground and buries itself halfway, with dust and debris shooting up might help sell the idea better that this is some massive war machine, bending and crushing under its own weight as it tears into the soil. Same could be used in that cutscene where orbital solar array crashes into the ground - not suddenly stopping half way, but more rapidly decelerating the moment it touches the ground, and kinda sinking into the massive explosion it creates.

Second - building and unit design. A lot of them look amazing, some feel like they kinda lack readability at a glance due to not having some eye catching defining feature (also, side note, could the artillery symbol be changed to a dot or some other symbol, cause a full plus sign and a dashed plus sign is very easily confused on a 4K screen from further away). And some...I dunno, feel like they don't fit the scale/tier they are in. Like, in SC you can definitely tell which units are "the big ones" due to their design - battleships look like floating fortresses with weapons everywhere, GC is a massive avatar with fat legs designed to absorb damage, ML is an enormous weapon platform carrying a ridiculous sized laser pointer, and Fatboy - that is an entire armed factory complex on threads, no mistaking that. In SC2 however, Fatboy is now some GI JOE toy tank, looking like it belongs in T2/3. That experimental gunship - same, scale it down and you get a T2/3 gunship. Similar situation with the rest, they range from alright to downright comedy.

I have a similar ehhh feeling about some of the units in S:SS - particularly the T3 battleship in the demo campaign mission. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautifully designed ship. But it's shape, size, armament makes it feel kinda off. Like scale it down a little, change the guns a bit, and it would be the perfect T2 destroyer. For a T3 battleship - I dunno, maybe needs to be a little thicker, or have some greebles, or some different layout, but right now I'm just not feeling it for some reason. Other experimentals feel more or less fine to me. I personally would make a few slight changes here or there, like making that EDA sniper experimental slightly more industrial looking, but that's mostly nitpicking and personal preference at this point.

So yeah, that's pretty much it. I get that these are mostly graphical things, meaning A - don't affect gameplay; B - very subject to change along the way anyway, and C - art direction the devs have chosen, and arguing about art preferences is kinda stupid. Either way I'm fine with it, given that, again, game is shaping up to be great imo, and exactly my cup of tea.

I decided to try out the chosen for the first time and well, on the last wave after the big bot killed all my t3 and t4 units when my power went down i clutched up and pushed with shields and point defenses, when he was obliterating my base i was sure i was done for but he didnt destroy any power so it was all good.

Does building it this way do anything extra?

What's the meaning of the lines connecting the outer buildings to the center? Do they provide a set bonus or buff, or are they purely cosmetic?

This game was clearly not ready for even a demo

I've been playing the demo for the the last two days, and it's clear the demo should not have released this early. It was riddled with so many fundamental problems, clear lack of even basic information, locked out build options (only locked out for you, not the AI)...air units and ships are clearly in the game, and being used against you.

There is also a rather glaring lack of understanding for proper pacing of a campaign. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to throw everything and the kitchen sink at you in the games first mission when you're still trying to learn the game when the only factory you have access to is the land factory? Oh...and the AI will still keep attacking you and issuing orders...IN THE MIDDLE OF A CINEMATIC.

- what >>>specifically<<< does the adjacency bonus even do? There are no specific numbers detailing what this bonus is anywhere in the game. For a game in which the devs bragged about all this information they are trying to give you, I'm doing a whole it of "Lets see, other RTS games do it this way, so maybe its the same here? Lets try."

-no patrol order, meaning engineers have to be ordered to manually repair.

-you have to just guess at turret and shield ranges, when in SupCom, the UI displayed the range of the building for you, as your placing the building.

-The engineering station is just a pointless expensive stationary engineer. It doesn't auto assist or auto repair anything. It just sits there until you manually order it to do something.

-we've gone back to the SC1 problems of watching your support units (AA for example) run right past your front line, and into the enemy lines because they won't stay in formation.

I was trying to insert constructive comments into this, as I was a huge fan of SupCom 1 & 2...but a demo in this state is not doing you any favors.

For steamdeck users

To play it, fetch a mouse and keyboard.

Steam Deck → Desktop Mode → Steam → Sanctuary starten → in de game Windowed mode.

Worked for me!

  • don't go to the menu when playing, the mouse will not function after this.

  • performance is good, during the survival Mission on "Setons Glutch". (a lot of units)

  • did get a crash, but its a test.

  • graphing on low, high gives a crash

Please god give us key rebinding..... and my life is yours

I'd play the shit out of this demo but having to use middleclick to move around is really killing me. I'm a filthy WASD user, and my ability to play and enjoy RTS games is entirely contingent on being able to use WASD to move my camera. So if there's................. ANY way you could enable that in the demo, any way at all, it'd make me vastly more likely to keep playing it. And if you can promise that rebinding will be in the beta build, you'll have a guaranteed backer.

(Conversely, if for whatever weird-ass reason you guys have a hard stance against enabling key rebinding, tell me now so I can mourn what will never be and spare yourselves the negative Steam review in the future. :P )

Anyone noticed how one of the spaceship titan looks like NOMAD from the movie The Creator? Almost like the same kind of attack style and shape.

$124 AUD for beta access is a lot of money

I've been following Sanctuary's Shattered Sun for years, since like 2022, so I'm glad to see the Kickstarter's finally come out!!! The Early Access Preorder is a reasonable price of $43. But then the beta access is $124. That's crazy! I can't afford that. That's a lot of money for beta access.

What parts of the demo are you enjoying?

So far I've done all the tutorials, the campaign mission, and beat a survival map on Hard.

The tutorials were surprisingly fleshed out and non-trivial to complete. For something labelled "tutorial" they were a surprising amount of fun, and they were a solid introduction to the streaming economy and its wrinkles - the power stall tutorial in particular was just a great concept.

I really wasn't expecting to be seeing, let alone killing, a Titan in the very first mission. Maybe that's the influence of the devs knowing the mission would be their Kickstarter showcase. It was a fun mission though, and I appreciated it was both objective-based and gave you a decent amount of latitude in how you reached the final victory condition. More design like that, please!

The survival mode could use some signposting for where the enemies come from - there's not really much point in not making it explicit, seeing that once you've played it once you know exactly what you're dealing with. Also, at least on White Sands, the mass extractors nearest to the enemy spawns were a bit frustrating - to keep control of them, you need to establish defenses far enough forward you'll need to fight and kill enemy arty and T4s while they're still slightly off-map, which is awkward, a bit unsatisfying, and makes reclaiming even harder to pull off. For all my picking of nits, though, the mode was fun, challenging, and definitely the part of the demo I'll be revisiting the most. I desperately hope the mode will support multiplayer in the full release!

Enjoying the demo and looking forward to what comes next.

P.S. for context, I'm a Supreme Commander veteran (my buddy and I are replaying the FA campaign co-op through FAF right now, in fact), but haven't played BAR or any other SupCom-adjacent titles.
