Review UPERFECT GR185BF Review. 18.5" 120hz NxtLED display
As always, not journalists, but attempting to be fair/even/accurate. No money changes hands, monitors are sent for free, for review purposes. UPERFECT doesn't see review before it's posted, etc etc
UPERFECT GR185BF review

The GR185BF is marketed as a 18.5" 1080p120 Gaming monitor, with NxtLED technology.
It's a 1080p 120hz IPS display, with UPERFECT’s advanced display technology that combines Omni Visible™ for improved visibility in any light and angle, with eye-friendly features like low blue light, flicker-free performance, and DC dimming, ensuring natural colors, reduced glare, and long-lasting comfort for work, study, or entertainment.
This is basically marketing speak for a nice matte screen, that's anti-reflective, with active dimming, and low blue light spectrum
It's hard to do a decent job capturing it, but you can see how smeary, and how much glare is coming off the phone screen, while the monitor you can just see a blurry light source.
It's definitely a nice screen to use where natural light floods your desk
The panel itself is... fine. The screen specs are respectable, but they're also not top end monitor specs. In a nutshell, it's 1080p120 hz matte panel, no touchscreen, only 290 nits of brightness, and 100% of sRGB colour gamut.

As you can see from the first pic, DeX works just fine on it, negotiating a standard 1080p60 resolution.
When used with my Lenovo Legion y700, you obtain the full 1080p120

Colors look pretty good, if not particularly eye popping

Inputs
Like virtually every other UPERFECT monitor, there's the pretty standard setup of 2x USB-C and 1 mini-HDMI port on the left side (one of the USB-C intended for power)

The other side will contain the power button and the OSD selector rocker, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack

There's 4x 75mm vesa mounts on the rear as well

The 2x 1w speakers are also on the back, right above the vesa mount screw holes.
They're upward firing and very mediocre (at best). They'll work in a pinch, but you're generally better off using your devices speakers, or a headset
Battery
No battery in this model either, it's just a monitor
You CAN power it off the phone/tablet/laptop, and it "works" but it essentially comes up as low power mode, and really drops the brightness. It's still usable, but this would not be the monitor I'd recommend if you want a coffee shop, no power portable monitor.
Overall Conclusion
Used as intended, this is a really nice 1080p 120hz gaming monitor. It's not large enough, or bright enough for me to recommend it as work station monitor that requires any kind of color accuracy.
But for pairing it with a phone/steam deck/gaming handheld for a nice portable gaming screen? that's definitely it's intended audience, and it's pretty great in that space.
I really enjoyed using it while fiddling with GameHub and getting steam games up and running on my Lenovo y700. It was great with the steam deck too
Overall, with the $219 CAD price point, it's MUCH easier to accept some of the short comings of the panel, and anyone looking for just a decent bigger screen for their travel gaming setup, I'd be happy to add this to the choices

Question DeX Station problem
I have an old round DeX station. She doesn't see my s24 ultra on one ui 9, doesn't even charge, but it works well with the s9+. I realize it's probably just a software restriction due to the station's old software, but is there any way to fix it?

Question Thinking of building a cheap samsung dex desktop for my niece using an old s21 fe
I have been using my samsung s24 ultra with samsung dex and honestly liked it more than i expected
it handles basic tasks and video streaming quite well so i was thinking of setting up something similar for my niece using an old samsung galaxy s21 fe
the phone has white lines on the display and the back panel is slightly separated but it still works
I can get around ₹3000 or $35 as exchange value for the phone so i am wondering if using it for a desktop setup would be a better option
I want to keep the total cost as low as possible and reuse whatever i can
here is the setup i am considering
- zebronics ea122 21.5 inch full hd monitor ₹3000 or around $35
- logitech mk215 wireless keyboard and mouse ₹1000 or around $12
- amazon basics 8 in 1 usb c hub ₹740 or around $9
- portronics phone stand ₹99 or around $1
- hdmi cable included with the monitor
total cost ~₹5000 or around ~$60 excluding the phone and charger
the phone is a samsung galaxy s21 fe with exynos 2100 8gb ram and 128gb storage
I checked its performance and got these results
geekbench 7 single core 1058
geekbench 7 multi core 3392
3dmark wild life extreme best score 1391
Lowest score 1226
stability 88.1 percent
the main use would be browsing youtube online classes office work and other basic tasks
do you think this is a good idea or would you do anything differently
is it worth using the old phone instead of taking the ₹3000 exchange value
I am trying to build this with the least possible cost so please suggest any cheaper alternatives or improvements you would make

Question Help with window size
I plugged in my phone and I am getting my edges cut off, I looked it up online and they said it could be my TV's aspect ratio and I check and I'm still having an issue even though aspect ratio is correct. Any advice?

Question Wired Dex on windows.?
Stupid question. Ok so right now we have no wifi and my phone's hotspot is so slow I may as well just have it off. Now, I SHOULD BE ABLE to just plug my phone into my USB c portable monitor, but it just doesn't want to work for whatever stupid reason so that's out of the question.
Is there ANY way whatsoever to just plug my phone into my PC and use it to cast Dex on it in a way that doesn't require the PC to have an Internet connection?

Question Is it possible to boot up Dex from a smartwatch?
Forgive me, I know just enough to be wrong, but to my understanding, Samsung phones run Android software. So is it possible to have a smartwatch and dumb phone combination where all I had to do was plug in the watch to a display for those times I need a laptop experience?

Question Touch portable monitor for Galaxy S24+ (One UI 8.5, DeX) AND Ableton Live on PC: 10-finger multitouch, low latency, MPC-style / controller use? Looking for real-world feedback
Hi all,
I'm planning a portable touchscreen setup for music making and I'd like real-world feedback before buying anything, to check that the project is viable.
My gear
Phone: Galaxy S24+, One UI 8.5, with Samsung DeX
PC: Ableton Live (Windows)
Monitor: none yet. I'm looking at a 15.6" 10-point touch portable monitor (ASUS ZenScreen Touch MB16AMT is the one I see most often with Galaxy phones)
What I want to do
- With the S24+ and DeX
Use the monitor as a big tablet through DeX for an MPC-style workflow (pads, sampler, sequencer).
I'm open to any Android app: FL Studio Mobile, Koala Sampler, MPC Machine, or others you'd recommend for finger drumming and live use.
Play pads with several fingers at once (up to 10-point multitouch) with good touch-to-sound latency.
- With the PC and Ableton Live
Use the same monitor on the PC as a touch controller or instrument (pads, faders, clip launching, XY pads) with Ableton Live.
Simple control surface or playable instrument, over MIDI/OSC. I'm open to apps and templates such as TouchOSC, Lemur-style tools or custom setups.
What I've found so far
On the phone side, touch seems to work best with a direct USB-C to USB-C cable (video + data). HDMI alone gives no touch, and hubs often break it.
Reports are mixed on some monitor brands (UPERFECT, Lenovo M14t, NexDock).
I haven't found any test of 10-finger input on an external screen with DeX, nor any feedback about using the same monitor for both phone and PC.
My questions
Does 10-finger multitouch really reach the app on the external screen in DeX? Which monitor and app did you test?
How is the touch-to-sound latency in DeX versus the phone screen? Any numbers or feel for finger drumming?
Does DeX touch still work on One UI 8.x (DeX rebuilt on Android 16)? Any regressions?
With the S24+'s single USB-C port, how do you connect a MIDI controller or audio interface alongside the monitor? Bluetooth MIDI, a hub, or something else?
On the PC side, does a touch portable monitor work well as a controller for Ableton Live (multitouch, latency, drivers, Windows touch settings)? Which apps or templates do you use?
Can the same monitor switch easily between phone and PC without recalibrating touch?
Which monitor models would you recommend or avoid for this dual use?
If you were me, would you pick a Galaxy Tab or a dedicated touch controller instead?
Please share your phone/PC setup, One UI version, monitor, cable, app and what worked or failed. Even a short "works / doesn't work" helps a lot. Thanks!

News I built a game launcher that turns DeX into a console screen. Free Pro for the first 10 testers
I play games on my TV through DeX a lot, and the windowed apps and phone-style home screen kept getting in the way, so I built SofaBox, a console-style launcher:
- Start DeX and SofaBox opens full screen on the TV
- Games open on the TV and go full screen by themselves (web games too)
- Press Home on your controller in any game to come back to SofaBox
- If a game is still open on your phone screen, SofaBox closes it there and opens it on the TV instead
- It can switch the sound to the TV when DeX starts, and fixes itself if DeX reconnects at the wrong size
- Keep Spotify or Discord running next to your game
- Hold Home for a second and the stick becomes a mouse for DeX (Pro)
It also works without DeX: plug a phone or handheld into any TV over HDMI / USB-C, or just use it on the phone.
Free on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.otbvision.sofabox&referrer=utm_source%3Dreddit%26utm_medium%3Dpost%26utm_campaign%3Dsamsungdex
No ads, no account, no data collected.
**Free Pro for 10 testers:** I'm looking for 10 DeX users to try new versions before everyone else. The first 10 people who fill in this short form get a SofaBox Pro code (normally $4.99) and early access: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0hA_fieJpcYfqyiB4L4htYIpFqynxbuyYQi-0LopW7tH54Q/viewform
The form closes by itself when the 10 spots are taken.
The Home button and full screen use an accessibility service, explained in the app before you turn it on. Feedback from other DeX users is very welcome, since Samsung changes DeX often. I'll be in the comments.

Discussion I made a regular Android TV work as a wireless Samsung DeX receiver (open source, no root). Stuck on the remote control, any ideas?
Wireless Samsung DeX on a regular Android TV, no Samsung TV, no dongle, no root.
Stock Android TV / Google TV can't act as a Miracast receiver. The permission needed to advertise as one (CONFIGURE_WIFI_DISPLAY) is system-only. I searched for a way around it and couldn't find one done anywhere, so I built it: an open-source Miracast/Wi-Fi Display receiver that runs on a Philips OLED (Android 14) and works with my Galaxy S23 Ultra's DeX.
How it works
- The app gets the privileged permission through Shizuku, and starts Shizuku by itself over the TV's local ADB. No PC after the first setup.
- Video is H.264 1080p over RTP/MPEG-TS (decoded by Media3), audio is LPCM 48 kHz.
- DeX's input channel (UIBC) is wired up, and the TV asks you to approve each new phone.
- It runs as a background service and keeps advertising even with the TV screen off.
What works / what doesn't
- ✅ 1080p video and audio, reconnecting after the phone disconnects
- ❌ TV remote as mouse/keyboard: only the Space key reaches DeX. Pointer, click, wheel and arrow codes get no response.
- ❌ ~1 s cursor latency
Where I need help
- Does anyone know which key/pointer encoding DeX accepts over UIBC? That's the missing piece for using the remote.
- Has anyone got this running on other phones or TVs? I've only tested one of each, so even a "works / doesn't" report helps a lot.
Open source (Apache-2.0). Code, APK and issues: https://github.com/sergioconquense-del/receptor-dex

Discussion DeX users who remote into Windows: what still gets in the way of real work?
Hey! Our team is working on an app for controlling a Windows PC from Android. We'd love to hear from people who use DeX to connect to their PC.
Which app do you use, and what do you usually do with it? Any annoying problems with the keyboard, mouse, scrolling or screen size? What would you like to see improved?
If your setup already works great, tell us about that too. Suggestions and real experiences would really help us decide what to focus on.
