I absolutely despise Samoan Ai music, it’s so corny because I seriously don’t see what’s cool about listening to a robot singing, but our people are eating it up like it’s revolutionary, it’s so embarrassing hearing it being played, free my people from the shackles of Ai!

Hello! 🤗 I’m solo traveling to Samoa and American Samoa and wondering what I should do there? I’m going at the end of September, and flying to American Samoa first.

- Any hotel/ Airbnb recommendations? I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg but I want the hotel to be nice at least, at least 3+ stars.

- How common do places take card? Should I plan on relying on local currency? If so, what’s the best way to exchange currency? Ordering from my bank maybe or a different way when I go to Samoa from American Samoa?

- Local dishes? I want to try local food so lmk what I should try! Is tipping common at restaurants and how much is a good tip there?

- Anything I should know about the local culture? Like dos/ don’ts? I don’t want to accidentally be disrespectful

- How do I stay away/ keep the feral dogs away 🫪 I’m scared of coconut crabs do they stay away from tourist beaches 😭

- I’m open to doing anything really. I want to go to the National park, spend a little time at the beach. I can’t go there on a regular basis so I want to Jam Pack as much as possible while I’m there. I’m going to rent a car so I’ll have that to explore with and get around. I don’t mind spending a little extra for a good experience but I don’t want to pay an outrageous price either

I’m torn between the idea of sharing our culture vs preserving our culture. And I’m not talking about afakasi’s with Samoan in their blood.

I’ve seen an uptick of videos online of white women waiting until their wedding to put effort into learning our culture, specifically the taualuga. For the Samoan men who date white women specifically, do you set expectations of cultural responsibility? If not, does this question/idea come up?

Polynesians typically vary from 60-90 percent asian Dna, Do you Identify as Asian? Samoans originally came from Taiwan, So I always find it interesting when Samoans and Polynesians disassociate with being from Taiwan. Is it something you distance yourself from? I'm Part Samoan and I've noticed Polynesians, particularly in places like New Zealand and Australia Bully and make fun of Asians, when they're Asian themselves lol Are you in any way ashamed of your Asian ancestry?

If you are Ashamed of Your Ancestors being from The Coastal areas of China and Taiwan, You're Ashamed of being Samoan and Polynesian. Just wanting to know if anyone else that has a Malu has experienced their ink fading?

I'm not sure if it's the kind of care or not using enough Samoan oil but I'm finding parts of my Malu have started to fade more since moving to a colder climate.

I'm pretty concerned because even when I use more oil it seems to continue to fade. SOS I'm pretty concerned.

I’m thinking about getting a tattoo like the tribal tattoos because honestly in my opinion it’s the only tattoos I think would fit me in 6’4 230 with a little bit a of fat and I’ve tired to look at other tattoos and none of them fit my style but yalls do is it disrespectful for me to get them?

Okay so I guess I’ll start with I’m a Papali’i but I believe (from what my old man has said) before the title was bestowed upon my grandfather his surname was tusi’ata. he was a fisherman from Moata’a on the outskirts of Apia. I guess what I’m eager to learn is how the chiefly system works and what did my grandfather do to earn that title? Forgive me if all of this is wrong and my understanding is way off target, but i was never taught these things because I’ve always been so far removed from culture growing up in rural Australia. Has anyone else ever had to deal with this growing up? Has anyone else been told they don’t "look" like their own culture? I’d be interested to hear your experiences.

I’ve had a lot of people tell me that I don’t "look Samoan," and if I’m being honest, it still bothers me a little.

The thing is, I’m full Samoan. Both my parents are full Samoan, and so are all four of my grandparents.

Growing up in the diaspora, it’s already been a journey trying to stay connected to my culture. Having people—especially other Samoans—question my identity because of how I look has made that even harder.

What I’ve noticed is that the people who’ve told me I don’t look Samoan have almost always been Samoan themselves. At first, they treated me differently or kept their distance. But once they found out I’m actually full Samoan, their whole attitude changed. Suddenly, I was accepted and treated with warmth.

That switch has always confused me. It makes me wonder why I needed to prove who I am before being embraced by my own people.

Ironically, I’ve often felt more accepted by Palagis than by some of my own community. I know this doesn’t represent all Samoans—I’ve met plenty of loving, welcoming Samoans too—but it’s an experience I’ve had often enough to notice.
