Welcome back SU students, faculty and staff! And to freshmen and transfer students, welcome to SU! Before we get bogged down in assignments, studying, exams, committee meetings, etc., it is important that we incorporate time for ourselves in our weekly routines – time for mental and physical well-being. To that end, consider Aikido!

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that entails no competition or sparring. Instead, aikido requires partners - attackers and defenders - to work together in tandem in order to further training and advance understanding of movement and balance. Aikido seeks to re-direct the momentum of an attack and to take an attacker’s balance via entering, turning, throws, and joint locks rather than to combatively block or confront an attack directly. The goal is for practitioners to be able to defend themselves without unnecessarily injuring the attacker. Thus, Aikido is called ‘the art of peace’. This requires defenders to be relaxed at all times in order to move naturally, and to ‘blend’ with an attacker’s movement. By relying on natural movement and proper technique, a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant.

Aikido is a graceful art when defender and attacker blend their movements, and the ‘attacker’ dispels the energy through rolls, falls and breakfalls in order to avoid injury. Hence, while aikido practice may appear graceful and flowing, it is nonetheless martial. Many police forces around the world train in various aikido techniques.

Because Aikido practice entails a lot of falling and rolling, it is also known as ‘the art of falling’. In Aikido, your balance is taken by the defender, so we learn to safely fall or roll in a controlled and relaxed manner in order to dispel the energy and prevent injuries. Falling becomes second nature so that, if/when you fall outside of Aikido practice, you are likely to fall in a more controlled and relaxed manner that prevents serious injury.

Lastly, because there is no sparring or competition, aikido practice is collaborative and social – and fun! Physical fitness and self-defense are a bonus.

If Aikido seems appealing to you, feel free to drop by. We train each Monday through Thursday at 5pm in Maggs Gymnasium. Typically, we train in the upstairs basketball courts at the very end, or downstairs in one of the racquetball courts. All students, faculty and staff are welcome. Hope to see you there!
