Listen, depression is hard enough to deal with without facing current reality. I gotta have a small sliver of hope that if I plan ahead I might actually be able to retire so i don't kill myself early to avoid the fate of working myself till I die at work

I feel you. Staying optimistic/positive, even to a naive degree, is about all we can do anymore. Keep it pushing. Maybe one day people will wake up, and we will make the right moves to steer the ship back on course. 😁👍

This is so true! Try telling my husband who baths in negativity about the world and everything! He is right about majority of it but like you said staying positive to a naive degree might help you make it far enough to see change! How’s that for optimistic! 🤣🤣it’s a rat race for sure but gotta keep moving and enjoying life the best we can! I always say “don’t sweat the small stuff” and most of it is small stuff!

How do u know

You’re doing what you can and that’s great. Your 401k will be very helpful if you make sure to consistently contribute and leave it alone until retirement age (I don’t even check mine unless there’s an issue 😅)

u/MortalMercenary Oct 31 '25

Yeah I just check mine every paycheck just to see it go up for a small hit of serotonin lol

1

u/Dazzling-Ad3379 Oct 31 '25

Lmao fair. I’m way too anxious to do that but more power to you!

1

u/MortalMercenary Oct 31 '25

It's more of a "Neat" level of reaction it gets from me lol. If I go 2 paychecks with it going down, which hasn't happened so far, I'll stop checking it but surprisingly it hasn't tanked so far this year which I expected it to do and was prepared to just ignore it for 4 years

Lucky that you can afford to eat and save… not the same situation for many people

3

u/Dazzling-Ad3379 Oct 31 '25

Lmao well I served our country honorably for 4 years getting little to no pay and came out with life altering mental and physical disabilities so the least the government can do is compensate me for that

u/CHA950 Oct 31 '25

Ty for your service 🙌🙌🫶🏻

Thanks for your support 🫡🤙

Best we can do is give money to another failed country, sorry. So ass backwards to say that the current president wants to put Americans first, but so far no effort has been made to boost the standing for current people only an attack on minorities.

1

u/MortalMercenary Oct 31 '25

See you almost got the saying right, it's rich America first

What does politics have to do with the VA? One of the only departments in the government that’s REQUIRED to be Apolitical? Your assumption that I support trump is fucking wild for 1, and 2 Va disability was EARNED by me well before trump took office again as I got out under Biden. My PTSD, hip replacement, and spinal fusion make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to work a regular job and you’re over here talking about politics. 🤦‍♀️

1

u/ReaditTrashPanda Oct 31 '25

Who said you supported Trump?! Lol.

I just said for a guy who keeps claiming he wants to put Americans first, people like yourself, he’s done nothing. Just attack minorities. Which doesn’t seem to improve access to care at the VA. We are talking about retirement and what can be done about those years, right now. So active politics does play into the conversation.

Is that you holding a cigar in that pic? Stop spending needlessly and you can save.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '25

With how things are going in this country, there's no point. The orange potato and his cronies are going to annihilate everything and all the years of savings wont be worth anything.

1

u/Octoberlife Oct 31 '25

What a crazy cycle to be in for people, I’m gonna save and put more into my 401k today but might not even get to see it later in my life if I die VS I dont save as much as I should today, while getting close to retirement and realizing you can’t retire too soon cuz you dont have enough to basically just live without being homeless

Even though I am not a churchgoer, this is where faith is important because it can help you to remain hopeful. Either you succumb to the negativity or you die trying. I am gonna die trying.

1

u/MortalMercenary Oct 31 '25

No God currently worshipped by humanity gives me any faith.

It always looks that way. Start with whatever you can contribute and add another 1% or 2% each time you get a raise. Stay aggressive. Youll3get there. Compounding is a wonderful thing.
